krisbee2000
Using Mandriva LE 2006... and even after the monitor shuts off, and I dont' have any real programs running, the HD keeps getting accessed in little tiny bursts... like; Click....... Click...... Click..... Is this normal for Linux/Mandriva? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
Urza9814
That's pretty much normal for any OS. Some background program accessing the hard drive....it happens I don't think it's anything to worry about. Hah...my hard drive activity lights almost never go dark.. I've almost always got a few downloads running on freenet. heh :)
arctic
If you do hear a clicking sound from your harddisk, then the drive is nearing death. Be careful.
daniewicz
Could this hard disk activity be associated with the hated KDE desktop search environment Kat?
Steve Scrimpshire
arctic: I was going to mention the same thing. :D You can go to the HD manufacturer's website, more than likely, and download a bootable utility to troubleshoot/diagnose the clicking. As for HD activity, it could be several different services that could be writing log files, etc.
ianw1974
Clicking disks means the head is crashing into the disk. You will start to lose data, and your system will become unstable. Suggest you backup your data asap and get a new disk installed. Or, it'll be dead in a few days and you'll lose everything.
