I have put things in the /etc/cron.daily folder and the script doesn't seem to run. As I look, it doesn't seem any of those scripts in there (from Mandriva) seem to be running. If I run the command: run-parts --report /etc/cron.monthly it will start executing those scripts... Crond is running according to mcc - so what is the deal? [moved from Software by spinynorman]

Sort of solved it- just dragged konsole from the startmenu and I don't have that issue. Guess this is solved :)

On my wife's IBM thinkpad T40, whenever we close the lid, you must put a password back in to unlock the user. However, in KDE4 I have all of those settings turned off. When I researched, it said to go after files in /etc/acpi/events but I didn't see anywhere to turn off the xscreensaver lid password deal. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Here, look at this... when I put the Konsole widget on my taskbar, when I click it it first makes a box with the word "Shell" in it, and I have to double click that to actually start the widget. What is the deal?

Last night I installed Mandriva 2010.2 on the recently purchased ebay laptop, and using MCC I kept running into being unable to mount my samba share from my main server in the house. I kept using the wizard, but it kept failing. It wants to use CIFS to mount (my older system used smbfs), and after an hour of investigation, I realized that mount-cifs was not installed (even though I was using the wizard). Using urpmi (or MCC) I installed mount-cifs and everything worked as expected. Note: I have more success specifying a username on the host, password for that user, and in the extra options setting uid=500,gid=500 (or whatever that user's number is on the host), but I am just putting that out there if you are still having an issue. Hope this helps if anyone is having an issue...

The reason I was going to reinstall is all of those little bits that the DE usually install is hard to keep track of. Also there were a few gtk version programs installed instead of those built on qt4 and it is hard to know all of that as well (xine, etc.). However, I am just going keep well enough alone - everything works, I imported my /usr/local and lots of .directory, and /etc settings, so my webserver, samba shares, ssh-server, etc. is up and running without a hitch. Hope my post helps anyone that was having an issue - I will try to turn on the 3d acceleration in a bit and see if everything runs - I think it was translucency that was the issue (and speedboot perhaps).

Ok, so after installing Gnome and hating it, I installed kde4 also again. What seemed to work was to: 1. Disable 3d 2. Disable Translucency 3. Turn off speedboot This also had the added benefit of making my soundcards work. Very happy so far. Now I have the agonizing decision on whether or not to reinstall to remove gnome from the system. Or maybe I should just leave it...

Gnome works without a hitch. I feel weird, like I am cheating on someone using it. Not only that, I am still install k3b, because it is what I am use to (and a few other kde apps that I am used to). So, it is definitely a kde4 issue and not kde programs... so what is the deal? I guess I am just going to get over it and just see if I can live with gnome. Seems ok - put like when you go to a kids house when you were in school and their mom makes pb&j with STRAWBERRY jelly, it is just funky and off-putting, even if it might be better.

I deselected all the kdedebug as suggested, with no change. ICEWM works fine and even running kde4 programs will work. KDE still will hang the second I start a program (and never recover). When I try failsafe, it loads up, but the konsole window is deselcted, and no matter what I do, I can't get my keyboard to actually allow me to type in the konsole, but the mouse and everything else works... BTW, this is a fresh reinstall, figuring I would try that. I am a KDE person, so I cringe at moving to gnome if that is the only way I can have a current system. Note, I do have two sound cards, could that be an issue? (I don't see how)

I believe it did. I am going to d/l a new copy, just to make sure, turn off the debugging, and do as you say. Will try this weekend again and post the results.. Thanks!

I tried installing 2010.1 (and then upgrading to 2010.2) twice, but each time, kde will freeze if I start any program. It will hang on the splash screen (or opening the konsole, etc.)... No problems with ICE. I have an old ati radeon card that I thought might be the problem, but I used my old xorg.conf for shiggles from my 2008.1 system without any difference. What log file should I look at to see what is going on? Should I just wait until 2011.0 gets released? My 2008 system is fine, but there are two programs that need qt4, so I have to do the whole install for it. I use multiple partitions, obviously :) Thanks in advance! Kris

Found the answer... Edit smb.conf and look for security... It should be equal to share, not user. This isn't an option that I see in MCC... Also, if you can't write to the share from another linux machine, in advanced options in the blank section, add fmask=0777,dmask=0777 which makes your share writeable.

You misunderstand me, Scarecrow. The vmware works fine, along with samba. The issue is a Mandriva Laptop, connecting to a Mandriva Desktop (both 2008.1). The vmware has no problems accessing the homes and utility drive, just the laptop (which should be easier, you would think). It never connects to the homes folder and there is always an error when I mount from the laptop machine. I don't know what the problem is. I tried today using NFS, but never got that up on the desktop properly. I figure since the samba works and has to be up, just use that. Thanks in advance, Kris

I can't get this working, and it is driving me crazy. I use VMWare, and the only way to make my drive available is to use Samba. This works perfectly. I just got a new (read: very old) laptop and installed Mandriva on it. I wanted to have a tunnel into my homes directory on my server machine, so I have been trying to mount the homes directory, but have been unsuccessful at every turn. Now, the username on the laptop is one thing, but the main machine the username is another thing. I specify the username and password, but no matter what, I still don't connect... What am I doing wrong? I just don't seem to have something set right. I have a utility drive that has permissions for anyone to access, and this, of course, I can mount without an issue. Looking at my mandriva2006 machine, when I hit the power button, nothing happens. It seems to have an entry in my dmesg output, but when I try to look at /proc/acpi/event, it says device busy, so I can't actually tell what is going on. ACPI is a tricky thing, so I was wondering if someone can steer me in the right direction on where I should be probing. This is a full standing arcade machine, so I would like to make the power button shut down, otherwise I will have to make a kludge to get it to shut off, which I would prefer not to :) Thanks in advance, Kris

Ok, running the locate command as instructed above, the files are definitely going nowhere... which brings me back to square one.

I put a few symlinks in there for any of my scripts that I am not aware of that points there... it is really just for the ipod and quicken/quickbooks backup... One problem down with my new install, only one left, and I will be able to leave my 2006 install behind... :) Thanks again!

I'm sorry.. what I meant was they were showing up under storage media in konqueror... not actually under /media (which I don't want them there anyway, I want them in /mnt)... and of course what you suggested worked fantastic (and I didn't know you can do)... However, there is no way to get the removable storage devices to show up under /mnt instead of /media, huh? I put in symlinks, but that is just a workaround... and that might be just fine, but if there is a way to get them under /mnt, I would love to know...

In 2006, I had no problem automounting my Ipod or flash drive... but in 2008, they don't automount, and I don't know where I should go to enable that. They do show up in KDE under media, but I don't want to have to physically mount and unmount each time. Where do I start? I have done searches, but I keep getting old hal information...
