fuzzylizard
Hello, I just setup a firewall/router using an old computer and Smoothwall. Very easy product to install and get up and running. However, now I would like to change the name of my computer, how do I do this? Currently it the name needed for my cable modem connection to work, but this name has been given to the router computer and I would like to change the name of my desktop computer, anyone know how to do this? ramfree17
from the LOST archive To change the host name of your machine, as root edit the file/etc/hostname. Alternatively, use the 'hostname' program. "man hostname" for details ... ciao!
fuzzylizard
Thanks, worked perfectly.
fuzzylizard
Didn't work perfectly. I have used hostname on my red hat 8.0 computer and the change worked, but on my Mandrake computer, I can't get the name change to stick. I use the hostname command to change the name, but when I reboot, the name reverts back to what I set it as when I did the install. Any suggestions on how to make this name change thing permanent? MottS
Isn't it in /etc/hosts for MDK ? .. Just a guess because I don't have any /etc/hostname. MOttS
paul
edit you /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth file example ifcfg-eth0 ifcfg-eth1 this will make the changes stick
CanuckKev
from the LOST archive To change the host name of your machine, as root edit the file/etc/hostname. Alternatively, use the 'hostname' program. "man hostname" for details ... ciao! When I tried this, it didn't take through a reboot of the machine. Instead I ran the Wizard under Mandrake Control Center -> Network to get the change to take. Until I did this, the hostname was restored everytime I rebooted the machine. Seemed weird to me, but since I got it changed, what the heck...
Cannonfodder
Or you can just open a console and type hostname Should prompt you for a host name..
paul
hostname is got thru the ifcfg-ethx files on boot up .. so if you change the hostname in ifcfg-ethx then when you reboot it will be changed :-)
fuzzylizard
Instead I ran the Wizard under Mandrake Control Center -> Network to get the change to take. Until I did this, the hostname was restored everytime I rebooted the machine. Seemed weird to me, but since I got it changed, what the heck... Yea, this what I did. I just reran the networking wizard in the Mandrake Control Center and then rebooted and the name change stuck. I had to reboot though. Although, I did the hostname command on Red Hat 8.0 and it worked. I wished more things worked consistently across distros. Thanks for the info.
