SoulSe
http://talk.google.com/ I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Google will snatch the IM market from AIM and MSN within the year. The official client is available for Windows only, but on the site they explain that it runs with Gaim and a pile of other third party clients. Interestingly, it seems that Google are big on third party clients, while most other IM providers try to force you into using their official client... devries
MS was big on open standards and third party clients when ICQ was king. :) But we should give google some credit: they use the open jabber protocol.
SoulSe
Yeah, I just saw that. What's neat is that they've added voice to Jabber (or their flavour of it). Problem is, most of the third party clients won't do speech.
fangbite
Looks interesting but unless google does something miracless with this, I don't think it'll beat AOL instant messanger (the most popular I've seen). I'm glad to see google doing this, but its nothing that looks like a sure fire winner.

phunni
yeah - it's easy enough to use with a 3rd aprty client but (I believe) you need a gmail username to sign up (which is fine - I have one) but you also need a gmail username to add a buddy! Therefore, a jabber name won't work... If you look through those instructions you'll see that you're usign ther jabber protocol to connect to a gmail specific server... Jza
I just configure my GAIM to it. here are the google instructions: http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/ans...py?answer=24073
tyme
You can't talk to non-gmail/google talk users right now, but apparently they're working on it. So, the jabber field that I added to peoples profiles won't suffice. We'll need a google talk field too - *sigh* - more work for me :P

SoulSe
It's amazing how quickly this is spreading! Well, so far I'm impressed. Google are going to take over the world, one computer at time. Because of Google Talk, I now have gmail (never needed it before) and lots of people who just had gmail now have IM. I'm connecting to it wit AdiumX and I've also used iChat and Gaim - both seemless. This is also showcasing what an awesome transport Jabber really is and what can be achieved with it; VoIP, video... really neat. I've heard rumours of Google making a play for Skype, anyone else heard that?
