adolfix
Is it possible to use a USB storage key to storage and transfert files between windows and mandriva ? Up to now I have used this USB storage of 256 Mo with Windows only. I would like to use it also with linux. I can see in linux /dev/sda but It requires to format it and to mount it. If I do so, can I still use my USB storage with Windows ? Thanks in advance. Edited May 21, 2005 by adolfix
ramfree17
i have 1 CF and 1 MMC flash disk which are both 64MB in capacity. I use them to transfer files between the Win2k workstation here in the office and my linux system at home since I dont have internet at home. Both are formatted in fat[16|32] so it is readable in windows and linux. ciao!
adolfix
Did you format it with mandriva 10.1 ? Thanks in advance
adamw
As long as the device is FAT32 formatted you should be able to use it this way with no trouble (I use my Neuros music player as a storage device occasionally).
adolfix
One I have formated it with linux, have I to mount it in linux ? And can I afterwads use it with windows XP as usual ? Thanks in advance.
ramfree17
if you formatted it in a filesystem other than FAT then i would recommend that you save the data currently in that flash storage and reformat it so both your systems could use it without further hassle. and no, i formatted it in windows because i do so everytime i 'clear' its contents. i am still paranoid about that 100,000 write support of the cards (yeah its a lot of writes but i still opt to be careful and paranoid ). i can do it in linux but hey my windows workstation here at work does not mind. ciao! scarecrow
Formatted as FAT32, all you need to have it automounted is the HAL daemon running. But you can also mount it manually, either from console or a GUI tool (say kwikdisk, or Krusader's MountMan, or the devices tab of Konqueror 3.4.0, or...). adamw
To be clear, you can use Linux to format it in FAT32 format - i.e., you can format it in Linux and still have it accessible in Linux and Windows. You'll only have a problem if you use Linux and format it in a *Linux* filesystem, like ext3 or reiserfs.
theo
It's what I did: format as FAT32 in Linux. I can access my usb mass storage under Windaws. Thanks Tux.
