Guest
A thread on cooker seems to indicate that supermount is broken again and should be disabled. You can do it from the Mandrake Control Center or from the console with supermount -i disable.
Ixthusdan
What are the problems? I have not experienced any so far on my installation.
spiedra
Me neither. It's working fine for me so far, though I will say in RC1, supermount was flakey.
Guest
I feel a bit responsible for the current state of supermount, since I talked Juan into fixing floppy-write-PANIC issues, which seems to have utterly broken supermount for CDROMS in the released 9.0 kernel. A simple 'find' in /mnt/cdrom will probably reveal what I'm talking about (half the files cannot be stat-ed). In addition, there is the problem of non-freeing inodes on zips and floppies. Juan, Andrey and probably others, did a great job on patching up supermount for each release, but I do have to admit that I have not seem it working without problems in the 2.4.x series. So, the question is, since the default enabling of supermount is bound to get people into trouble (try to install a game or whatever from CD), shouldn't there be an update ASAP for 9.0 with a 1) a fix or 2) disabled default supermount. At least it should be added to the errate page. Sorry, but I missed the author's name. Blubeard.
Ixthusdan
Ahh, I see. I have found the problem DOES exist on my computer, by doing a simple find. Thanks for the tip!

DragonMage
Now, I agree with that statement. I only use floppy once a month. I know enough to use the mount command to mount a floppy (use right click and mount command to the floppy icon in kde).

Guest
I left some it out by accident. Here is the full text of the fost and last message. Sorry about the length. The vast majority of people I know hardly ever use a floppy. a number of people even have built machines without floppy drives. Supermounting the CD with this bug makes the machine totally useless; and explaining manual mounting to my converted friends will scare the hell out of them. falcaraz@ono.com wrote: >Danny > >Really I haven't seen supermount runing perfectly under 2.4; so, as you >say, is a good idea take in account other possibilities (Volumagic?) for >the future. Ixthusdan
OK, I'm an idiot. When I turn off supermount, my CD burner stops working. In fact, when I try to mount either of my CDROMs, I get errors like "no media found" (it is there!) and "file system not supported" (just stuff backed up on a CDRW) I turn supermount back on, everything is fine. What do I do?
bvc
Did you use mcc to turn it off? If so, did you select the other 2 after unselecting supermeount? What does your /etc/fstab say?
Ixthusdan
I selected both user and explicit mount and deselected auto. I did use mcc, but maybe I should manually do what I need? Also, I created shortcuts on the desktop, which add a mount command when supermount is off. (yes, I like GUI!) Maybe I should just use terminal? bvc
When you go to mcc>MountPoints>?cdrom?>tick Options, click O.K., it then list user supermount noauto Did you select user, and noauto? and unselect supermount? This is all that's required to turn off supermount. BTW, I was born in Richmond Indiana, and half my relatives are still there, in Gary, New Castle, and a few other places. I haven't been there for 7 years, but I love to visit! Never been to Valparaiso.
Ixthusdan
Hey, I work in Gary and live in Valpo. OK, I re-did everything and this time it worked. I must have been in a hurry and not checked both boxes. Only issue now is I can only burn as root, whereas before I could burn as a user. But I can live with that.
