Language settings

Hey all,

 

I am running MDK 9.2 in English using KDE as default desktop. I would like to be able to switch from English to French while working (need French desktop/keyboard occasionally). Does anyone know how to configure KDE to allow language switching?

Using localedrake should do it for you. You can use it from the command line, or from System > Configuration > Other > LocaleDrake. If it doesn't give you the option for French, install the french i18n file via rpmdrake.

 

You'll have to log out and log back in for localedrake's changes to go into effect.

I think you will have to edit the folllowing file and change some variables:

/etc/sysconfig/i18n

from en_ USA to fr_FR, but not sure which line:

I thought you had to edit ~/.i18n, but I'm not 100% sure.

 

As far as those environment variables are concerned, check out this page for a pretty good explanation of most of them. It is about Japanese in SuSE, but it'll be the same for French in Mandrake.

 

BTW, I found that changing some of those settings to ja_JP stuffed up some programs (they just wouldn't load at all), but it might be different with a language that at least uses the Roman alphabet... :P

I tend to use a different user.

I set this up for interent cafe use but to me it depends what you wanna change.

 

i.e is the keyb the same or not.

 

I installed the 18i stuff for KDE and then just change language in kcontol.

 

Some stuff is really bizarre. How do you specificy for instance which version of OO to open ?? This is more important to me to get the spell/grammar checkers ....

i've never used this (English speaking only here) but in KDE Kontrol Center (aka: Configure Your Desktop) under Accessibility->country & region->locale, there's an option to add more than one language. so, i'm assuming that after you do that there should be a way to switch languages on the fly, or use them both simultaneously. might be something worth checking out.............

Not really ontopic, but I was just wondering if a French French-speaker would use a British English language or an American English language? I may find this useful some day.

yep thats the one....

the thing is its at 'different levels'

i.e. In KDE you can switch KDe menu's but you might not change keyboard etc.

 

 

QChem... MY 2c is to use the American-English.

Im English and I prefer it :D anything for standardisation (or is that standardization) :D
