    WineX

I think that WineX is a good program although I haven't used it yet. Maybe better: a good initiative. I'm considering installing it, so I don't have to go to windows if I want to play a windows-game our use some commercial windowsprograms I already had and used working with. What I was asking myself is: Can Windows virusses also damage your linux system then. I know that linux is different than windows, with it permissions, but I suppose that some virusses or trojans will work not?

    groups

I don't found a better place to post it... When you start up Mandrake for the first time, you have maybe already 30 different groups and a user nobody I think(also root and the ones you created of course). What is the use of this, they aren't anywhere used for files or directories. Can I just delete the groups I don't want? By the way, I can't see my windowspartitions as users. I've read something that I just have to add my userid/groupid in fstab to make that possible...Is this correct? Thanks
  3. Never had any nproblems with the portability with java and I've read (more than)some things in java for school
  4. With my older mozilla's(think 1.2) I had the problem that mozilla closed when I opened a page that used java(not javascript...). It was my fault. I had to make a symlink in mozilla/plugins to java.../jre/.../plugins/ns610(or something)/libjava.... In any xase directley to the plugin for java in the javadirectory and not like I did(I copied the plugin first to a directory where all my plugins where located). Now I have mozilla 1.4a and it works also fine with the above method. I have now 1.4.1_02 and previously I had 1.4.0 I believe (with mozilla 1.2).
  5. Linux is known for it's security and it is one of the reasons I like it. Hopefully they'll keep paying attention....I hope Linux doesn't becomes a product that needs security fixes every week. Of course you can say that it is better to repair them than someone "bad" discovers them. It is even better there are as much as possible avoided...
  6. I meant shorewall, not sorewall....
  7. Shorewall has a good docuemntation. I'm not an expert, but like everything, only allow what you need as far as I know. www.pcflank.com is a good site to find out wchich programs uses which ports or look at the syslog-file for things shorewall blocks. I only allow outgoing things. Shorewall(now automaticaaly set like this) has(had->now automatically set his way) an option ALLOWRELATED, so related connections to your connections are allowed. I think this works like that ->I'm only starting also. Shorewall docs are a good way to start and looking at some internet-pages is also good for finding some info. Prelude is a good addition to a fiewall, but I haven't used it yet.
  8. I believe there is a way to do this with sorewall, but sorry I haven't figured it out completely myself. I know you can set priorities to a kind of connection/protocol, so that messages of that type are placed in a certain list: there are 3 kind of lists I believe: list1 is located before list2,...So, packets in list1 will be sent before lpackets in list2,..... It is a certain file in shorewall you can set this(don't know the name anymore, but there aren't so much and it's docs are well). It is in /etc/shorewall I think, if you have shorewall installed...Be sure to let you're loginconnection for your ISP trough with shorewall, else you can't connect to the internet: don't know this precisely for a dialup: With me it is a udp-outgoing-connection, but I have also restricted IP's. More I don't know yet, but I want to use it, so my upload sometimes doesn't block my download...
  9. To give you the possibility of another brand... Mandrake recognizes immediatley...It is an older printer, but works very well. It can also provide good images. I use it mainly for text and for that, it has also worked well... A good printer to my opninion and works well. If you'll find it in a shop I don't now...I have it almost 1,5 year I think.
  10. Maybe there are some persons interested, so I post it here: An opensource mailvirusscanner(I think for on servers, but maybe it can also be used on a desktop): http://www.amavis.org/ I don't know if it is good, didn't ry it, seems an active project... An opensource(general) virusscanner (but still in pre-apha-phase, advised not to use in productive environment): http://www.openantivirus.org I would wait to use it at THIS moment(like they also advise), because it is still under development. Anyway, there aren't much virusses that work under linux/unix,... anyway at this moment as far as I know and I hope they are already resolved...
  11. The mailscanner is opensource... There is also a opensource (general) virusscanner, but that is still in a start-stage and they don't advise to use it in a productive environment. If your still interested -> http://www.openantivirus.org/
  12. This looks an old post, but anyway... I've searched a little bit and I think I found an opensource mailscanner.... at http://www.amavis.org/ I can't guarantee anything, because I just discovered it myself. It seems to me an active project, because the last news is of 7/3/2003. I think it is an very interisting mailscanner and you have to choose 3/4 types, depending on how much mail your newsserevr will get. Read the docs, but maybe better the newsboards there.... You'll have to determine for yourself if it is good enough. I haven't looked at it enough to make an opinion about that.

    mouseproblems

I tried someone else mouse and it worked. I've bought now a new(the same) mouse and it works...I suppose it was a hardware problem.... I hope mandrake will always give the option to manually select tour mouse(you can of course cgange the XF-file), because everytime windows started up, it detected a "new" mouse, while it was already installed, but under genius instead under standard mous(luckily you can disable it). If you have mouseproblems in linux, you can try to set "Auto" under protocol of th mousesection in /etc/X11/XFConfig-4 en try it out.... Thanks for the help...

    mouseproblems

It took me a while to place this comment, because now, windows detects the mouse I think(the mouse is ;listed with devices), but with an x or something over it...I can't use the mouse anymore, because it won't work... By the way, now I'm asking about mouses...Can lionux handle optical mouses...I suppose the question is if linux xan handle their protocol opr something???mouses still with wire. Can it detect all mouses??? Thanks for the help...I'm going to open mouse and see if . I"ve cleaned it, just won't work. I had a 386 for 10 years( maybe incredible for some persons) Have now a new computer 2 years almost. Had never had any problems with that 386...Is hardware getting worse????

    mouseproblems

I've never heard that a mouse can stop "working" like that???? Never have seen it myself(at school, home, with others....)

    mouseproblems

I've never had problems with my mouse..till now. I suppose there is an explanation, but "suddenly" when I restarted my mouse began jumping from one place to another when I moved my mouse. This is not the whole time, but frequentley. It also axts as I give mouseclicks on some places, but I'm bnot even on that place. The strange thing is that it does it also under windows...Is it a pure hardware problem....Anybody now what the problem is? (like always) it is configured with the ps/2 protocol opn /dev/psaux (it is a genius netscroll+ mouse) Thanks, Michel
  17. I've read that openoffice could save as pdf, but I can't figure out where...I looked under "Save as", but don't see it...I've Openoffive 1.0.2... Where can I find it, ot did I overlooked it (many times?)?

    raid

If read some about raids and i have the impression that you have to choose between speed and safer info-keeping, but isn't there a raid that combines two, beause... if you have a raid that duplicates info for safe info-keeping and you want to read some blocks, can't (say raid of 2 disks) disk 1 reads the first block, while disk2 reads the next???Now, you'll also have a speed-increase I believe...??? Is there such a raid??? Thanks.
  19. I'm not sure of this, but I'm think it is right. Are Belgium government want to become a e-government. So, you can do a lot of things online.... When Bill Gates was here they showed him around...I believe they're using the .NET-technology and of course spend a lot of money on it....I don't think our ministers have ever heard about linux or another OS... All tax-payer money...
  20. I can't really say that they sell linux here as far as I know..., but it is getting better: Some shops are selluing staroffice now......
  21. Don't forget "poweroff" -> you don't have to push the powerbutton :) .
  22. Because I can't find a bugzilla(???or where do you post errors for mandrake) I'l post it here. During my installation, some buttons at the bottom I could not reach with my mouse, because they were located out of the screen (or thebox where the buttons are placed). Anyway the only way I could reach them was with the keyboard... I think it was past the installation of the software...

    nvidia drivers

Tracing all systemcalls???(With only the necessary programs running I think it are still a lot of system calls....) Looking for somethinh that freezes all keyboard I/O and something so that the mouse still moves, but there is no interaction with the screen.... A difficult job...but a crashing system is much worse(ok, don't must overreact here: it are only those 2 webpages as far as I know...if you've looked at hop.to/dvs and click the foto's, you'll see that that webpage is very simple...so what makes it so differnt from the other webpages??)

    nvidia drivers

There has been a lot discussions about this, but I have some facts. A time ago, I posted that my browser(all graphical browsers I used->lynx not) always crashed when I visited 2 websites(why those 2, I don't know). It is not because the browsers, but because of the nvidia drivers!!!!I'm 99,999999 sure(I leave alittle space, but am very sure). Why? I wanted to try the next. I've just reinstalled everuthing. I tested the two sites with the opensource nv-driver. Everything went well. I've just installed back the nvidia-drivers(for the 3d).(ok, I have top admit: Mandrake is compiled witg gcc 3.2.1 I believ and I compiled with 3.2.2, but it almost doesn't matter in comparison what what my test shows). I went back to the same website after I had installed the nvidia-drivers and within 5-7 seconds evrything froze...... The 2 sites(if there is someone of nvidia on this forum->doubt it, but ok...): http://hop.to/dvs (especially this one when I go to the foto's) http://groups.msn.com/FamilieDVSKerstmis2003 If anyone has also the latest nvidia drivers installed, please tell me. Why doesn't nvidia use the opensource drivers for 2D, much better....(I've read iun their docs they did in the past...) I don't go much to these websites, so it doesn't matter so much, but it may not be. Question:if I want to use the opensource drivers again, do I just have to change "nvidia" to "nv" again(was the only thing I had to change in that file). Is that all? Thanks
  25. I've downloaded the latest mozilla-version today and guess with version... :) proof for this(for the unbelievers if there are): Mozilla 1.4a Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030301 * Copyright © 1998-2003 by Contributors to the Mozilla codebase under the Mozilla Public License and Netscape Public License.
