  1. To make some of you jealous(how do youw rite it??) for the one time I maybe can :)... Will have downloaded 9.1 in 1hour and 50 minutes and probably faster. Have "plain" adsl...
  2. I think with the prioper setting you can make linux(in kde to my knowing and probably also others) more userfriendly tha others... -by adding all the compressed formats ark can support -lot of programs, with mimtypes already assigned, especially for udio/video/flash/...like you mentionned... I would choose one player for all mimetypes...Although xine doesn't have the collest front-end, it seems to be better for dvd..., else I would choose mplayer.....but that 's up to you ofcourse. Being sure that accesing floppies, cd's and dvd's go flawless...
  3. What is mentionned in the fstab? I thought the filesystem for dvd's was udf, not(else see man mount) and try to mount yourself....see if it works like that...
  4. Your asking a lot I think(but maybe not impossible, but diificult anyway..). just thought...Say you want to set the partitions your own way(what is better than the standard to my opinion: resiserfs, xfs,...) , I don't think every computer has the same size in harddisk..this would limit it too much. I don't think you can set the auto-installer in a way that the size of the partitions is like you would want it...or can it?
  5. I've done my latest installs from harddisk, just wanted to say, you can also just copy the file(not the iso's) and give the path to the directory where everuthing is located...( no iso in iso is needed)
  6. maybe have a sollution: this is some text from the mandrakeforums: Using the ISO image manipulation software, cut&paste the "rpms2" directory from the cd2...ISO and the "rpms3" directory from the cd3...ISO into the "Mandrake" directory in the cd1...ISO. Say you save it on a fat-partition(or whatever) can be recognized by the installer).... Alle the iso's in each other.... You put the installerfloppy in the new computer...The tricky part: can the floppy detect the other computer?if yes, you can select the path to the directory and install... Maybe with the auto-install-floppy, you can automate the path-searching too, soo the only thing they have to do is insert the floppy...The question is...can it detect the networkconnection and so the other computer?
  7. when you install with from the internet and probably also normal, you can choose wich components you wish to install. You can choose what you want...
  8. Indeed, scared me :)
  9. You're all scaring me :). Read somewhere that someone had troubles with probably the soundcarsd, that is the same as mine and now no ADSL???
  10. Will try that probably en hopefully the driver doesn't crash :)
  11. I agree with the previous...ALthough I've never used auto-install, it exist for the reason of easy identical installation on multiple pc's... I'm also a little confused. You mention that the sellers install the OS? Is there a problem with that or do the buyers get the software and install it themselves...or both? I suppose the second one is the problem....If you order a complete pc(I suppose this is the case here), the seller nows the components....
  12. I had some problems with my sound ones because an app wasn't working properly I think. See if any apps are running that you use your sound normaaly with and kill them. if so, check afterwards sound in the kdecontrolcenter and you app maybe works fine again
  13. Have you done rmmod before modprobe(suppose so)... Have you tried another driver with draksound(It gives me the choice between 2 drivers, one is not so good as the other). I had that shutdownproblem also ones with mu mouse, because I used the wrong mousesettings/driver...
  14. To make myself and maybe yourself easy, try choosing the driver again with draksound.... init_module binds the driver with the correct device. See if Mandrake sees the device in the hardwaresection of the controlcenter.
  15. Try "modprobe" instead of insmod, it takes care of any dependencies if there are I believe
  16. I'm using also via82cxxx_audio and am going to install 9.1 in the weekend probably, so will let you know then...In the meanwhile you maybe could try the other driver that is normally listed (with me anyway) with this one in draksound......See what happens... Will let you know..
  17. Try some things out in kdecontrolcenter->Components->Fiel associations: under application you'll find pdf end x-pdf(don't know the diiference yet, asked here somewhere). Anyway, with me it shows in the kde-window, so it is possible
  18. I've used mplayer for a short while: very good player, but I'm going back to xine now and try that again...Xine can also play everything and supposedley has better dvd-menu's than mplayer if you want to play dvd's...Have to admit that mplayer has some better looking GUI's than xine, but that can be solved :). Have a look for yourself.... http://xinehq.de/

    XFree...ze

I've everything worked with 4.2 I would work further with that and see wath could cause the error in 4.3...Haven't tried 4.3, so will see.
  20. Can't give a solution, but a kernel-vnullpointer durings tartup looks very bad to my opinion.... We've learned that writing to the null-adress restarts your computer, but the kernel protects itself against this :). bad pointers in the kernel are always very dangerous

What is the difference between for example x-audio/wav and audio/wav? is the first streaming?

    filesystems

I found something of less than a year ago. Although it is maybe a little old, like to have another opinion on it: http://www.osdl.org/presentations/lwe-jgfs.pdf I've especially paid attention to reiserfs-xfs: To my opinion xfs doesn't stress your system as much as reiserfs. That is very clear to my opinion. Sometimes it is slower than reiserfs, but mostley it appears to be faster. This test setup wasn't really complete, because someone tested also deleting and reiserfs was the first in that. Anyway I'm going to try reiserfs and certainly also xfs and do a benchmark myself as soon as I can.... Be aware, these are maybe old test results, I don't no the cuurent version of the filesystems and I think ext3 is renewed..., but maybe it helps a ltiile bit. When I've done a benchmark I'll post them back here. Probably I'll make my root ext3(why should anyone do that? It seems it is incompatible with previous versions?). So, maybe the new ext3 is also tested. Maybe it will surprise me...
  23. I've read that photoshop6 works with wine, with some extra help that is mentionned in the wine-applicationdatabase, version7 is more difficult, but maybe it is fixed by now, but not sure about this. http://www.winehq.com/ help->applicationdatabase
  24. I've also a via-motherboard, although not the same and use the onoard soundcard, that is pretty good. With sounddrake I could choose my card and ones(don't ask me how, but I think some app did it, or me:)) it changed top the other driver, but you can also choose the one of via. Although it won't be the same it is via82cxxx_audio and it is draksound, my mistake.
  25. Probably the same as Kmixer, but did you try aumix? Because you get some ound, it works a little bit. Had this problem also...Another option that's easy...with sounddrake you can choose among drivers manually, tried that? Else, you probably need to find a better driver indeed I think, but we'll see then...
