  1. I'm trying to install from anjuta from source, but it is giving me problems ... the dependencies are giving me troubles actually... wxwindows looks very handy
  2. I'm not sure, but I don' t think that is an abnormal temperature ..focourse if it keeps rising it is abnormal... I now let the more experienced people speek :).
  3. not really applicable here ..but for dvd-playback, be sure to have libdvdread and libdvdcss .... you can also try xine ( http://xinehq.de )
  4. There are so called modules (netfilter-modeuls if I'm right) that let you do ftp, ... which use random ports. If your program uses a standard/general protocol, there MAY be a module for this ,else als MAYBE :), but I would think less chance. don't have much time now: serach for netfilter or iptables. There are quite some modules. Not any good for you, but maybe other people: There are modules for passive ftp and H323. That are the ones I know of.
  5. Ok, as a person who has never run a server in his life, I'm going to try to help you. But there are qsuite some persons here that have quite some network knowledge. I'm presenting you some info, not a solution, I leave that to the others :): I suppose you can use active directory. (it's for redhat, but may help you too) Samba3.0 isn't beta any mreo I believe: http://www.netadmintools.com/art172.html This won't be enough I think ... for what you want, let's see: (this is helpful I think) http://hotham.net/professional/linux/ad_samba3 http://linuxgazette.net/issue36/blair.html (look for PAM) I would search around for maybe tighten the secuirty mroe if possible. -------------- An ntfs home-directory is maybe better? for ntfs, you can have a look here maybe: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/R...ide/ch-nfs.html maybe interesting: http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=2174 I suppose you know kerberos ..it's also a good authentication method: if you don't know it, some info(read it at samba, so I suppose you know, anyway): The user only has to give his pasword once. From then on, when the user tries to access a service(=server(something else??): ftpserver1, ...), the service checks if the user is allowed to access it. So, he/she only has to login once and from then on, he/she doesn't have to enter a pasword anymore, the rest is checked by the KDC(teh authentication server). Traffic is/can be encrypted. You can set up realms .. ---------- I'm always saying that if I would need a server, I would use xfs-filesystem for it, since I read their docs and saw some benchmarks and it looks like it gives good performance at low cpu, ... Anyway I think it's good. You could even set up a linux-system with samba-server and use samba for authentication. This is possible not? Anyway, you probably don't want to go through this stuff sincce I suppos eyou have already quite some accounts and I don't know if is good, since I never tried it myself. I think I would setup kerberos-authentication I suppose and ntfs(anyway tried this configuration btw?) or so, ...I'm not sure, it's up to you ofcourse. Hopes this helps you some
  6. There is a project for xine that let xine use the hardwareMPEG-2-decoding I suppose ... ofr viewing. I think it cannot hardware-record in MPEG-2 anyway. But I think the driver is also now in xine itself ... if you type xine --help, you'll get a list of all available video-drivers, but it can be it doesn't show all ...I thought it did, but got a little doubtfull myself since I should have more myself (which I saw listed before compiling xine myself). Anyway ..it's a video-driver. If it doesn't work, just tell and I'll send a mail to the xine-maillinglist. I'm subscribed to it anyway.
  7. Ooh yes FPS: * don't forget America's Army ... if you liek this game * Cube: http://wouter.fov120.com/cube/ * lenegds (online): http://hosted.tribalwar.com/legends/module...=showpage&pid=1 * transfusion: http://www.planetblood.com/qblood/ --- ok, no fps : tux racer: http://tuxracer.sourceforge.net/ freeciv: http://www.freeciv.org/ You can install another tile-map to change how thze game looks ... Some people just do't like the default. you can also change some other things: look at their page at the graphics, sound and tileset-links. just found this one: http://boson.eu.org/ you also have http://netpanzer.berlios.de/ ooh yeah ...I think enemy territory(ET) can also be instaleld on linux
  8. Ok, I didn't played all this game ... but mostly when I encounter something nice, I bookmark it: Dont forget top look at linux game tome some tips on games: (All the games are free or gpl or something) * Parsec : It's only playable on a lan. If there are bots (don't know anymore) you could do a 1 player game ... I read some people played over the internet by setting up a VPN, so that it looks liek they are on the same lan. Maybe you can play on the internet now ..don't know. There is activity .. look at the sourceforge-list. * I just found this ( a great collection of software: linux.org ): Torcs: Torcs * flightgear: flightsimulator ... don't forget to install the extra maps. I heard it's not easy at all. * Armagettron: enable all options and don't forget to install the extra's: extras * didn't tried it liek many games :), btu here it is (online roleplaying): Mistland * I play bzflag a lot. Graphically not the prettiest, but I like it: bzflag * Alteria * racer You can extend this game: see the 3rd-party-section of their page * Maybe they want to have also more of a thinking game???: 3d-chess: chess Ok, I have some others, buth don't know if you're interested .. they're not really 3d-intensive .. I mentionned some of them here too :). Hops this helps some.
  9. I use mozplugegr for a lot of stuff, but plugins for flash, ..can be installed using rpm I think. But you can also install them using mozilla's xpi-system .... these are just zip-files that make installation easy.you just click to install them: (from mozilla anyway and if the system is setup good, mayeb also from desktop environment but don't know that :D): http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/linux.html You could install xine and teh gxine-front-end (I use gxine-fornt-end myself ..although it is a little older ..and Mandrakje uses the totem-frontend actually .. I see there is a gxine-plugin listed ..anyway you can this also using mozplugger .. althought maybe not so nicely as gxine-plugin, but can't judge actually ..have no rea complains: if you want help with mozpluigger .you can ask here).
  10. In linux you have xine, mplayer, xmms, ... Xine and mplayer support (almost and I think you can say :) almost:) eveyrthing ): mp3, ogg, wmp, quicktime, realplayer, dvd, vcd, wav, flac, ....
  11. Ok, if you didn't know this yet ... you have too. Certainly if you have the money and the time. Anyway, have a look if you want: http://www.gpsdrive.cc/index.shtml A project in which they use gpsdrive .. you can have look at the other links mentionned on gpsdrive too. But here is one very nice project: http://www.dashpc.com/
  12. I just tried it out today ....man it rocks ... I just have to find out how to let teh dogs be cooperative with me :D

    Wireless Netwok

I'm waiting for UWB, finally something good( MAYBE replacing 802 in rteh future, but 802 evolves too :)??). I think it uses CDM. I hope it's right. Anyway it is much more reliable. It's uses by the army I think (CDM) ... It looks like noise, only witht he right combination of bytes you can pick it up. Only the distance I see... can't really replace 802 indeed then. I hope something with this reliability comes up and the same or greater distance than 802. There is maybe hope, but it isn't teh standard: http://www.techworld.com/news/index.cfm?fu...news&NewsID=577 little overview. It also mentiones something better than UWB. Hopefully UWB will be available soon. And about WPA...the new wireless security standard. I believe is was already cracked or so ..but I have to check on that again. To be sure, make a VPN. http://www.ultrawidebandplanet.com/product...1363581,00.html

    AMD or Intel ??

Ok was a litle late, but I just read in a magazine I bought the following: Athlon FX can calculate faster than Atlhon 64. I'm not sure if Athlon 64 and teh FX-cersion are meant as servers ..but can be uses as it I suppose. Opteron is for teh server-part. There is no "front-sidebus", it's replaced by hypertransport(I wonder what this is actually..) 200-serie-opteron has 1 and the 800-serie 2 extra hyper-transport-channels for in mutli-processor-systems. Hypertransport-channels work in full-duplex-mode with max 16-bit-bandwidth and 800 Mhz clockfreq..(in a double-datarate-method : don't know what means) I supose in half-duplex it's 32-bit :)...ok ok. Anyway you have to inform yourself about which memory to use. You need for opteron and Athlon FX buffered (registered) modules...something about 3200R-modules. Maybe a lead for motherboards ... (for Athlon FX) Asus SK8N, MSI K8T. Maybe by nopw also Gigabyte and Leadtek and maybe others ... but you have to check yourself here or someone else. At the moment the Cool and Quiet technique doesn't work for FX and 64-processors I believe (for controlling fansor something). Not really for you, but the heat-protection should will be more subtile in teh future I read ... it will slow donw the processor in small steps instead o shutting it down. For athlon-FX and opteron you need socket 940. Hopes this helps some

    AMD or Intel ??

I've heard ... that AMD is better in floating point stuff .. graphics and intel better in integer-stuff ..so far database, ... but this was a time ago and I'm for AMD actually. I've never ran a server so I'm not a person you should listen too if it comes to expereince in servers :). Though I like AMD and prefer them, because they are cheaper, give a lot of performance ... as much as intel ..even more in teh last articles I read(but check :)) and they have backwards (good) compatibility with 32-bit apps as you probably now. The new processors even have a builtin temperature-sensor like the intels whihc shuts it of at about 135 Celcius. Personnally I would look at benchmarks, but I like AMD. For the apps. If it's opensource-stuff you can recompile them. Gcc has upport for 64-bit and with AMD you have good 32-bit compatibility if you need a comemrcial program that isn't 64 bit yet. http://gcc.gnu.org/install/specific.html
  16. Hopefully this helps also some(have fun): http://www.linux.org/apps/all/Graphics/CAD/CAM.html: SagCad looks like it can do quite some things already, but maybe also teh other programs .. I haven't looked at them good, so I advise to have a look yourself to see what fits your needs ofcourse. The following project describes itselfs as: lignumCAD is a tool for designing furniture: http://lignumcad.sourceforge.net/doc/en/HT...HTML/index.html http://www.tech.oru.se/cad/varkon/index.htm http://pfrostie.freeservers.com/cad-tastra.../cad.page7.html
  17. I've not used evolution yet, but I'm using firebird and think mozilla has it also now. Maybe evolution has it also? There is a setting for my email-account(pop3) where I can specify how long after I have downloaded the message, the message should be deleted. I thought this was an imap-only-thin,g, but it seems pop3 has it also .... I use it for my school-account, so when I download it at home, I can still read it through webmail at school the next days, when I need it. Don't know a way of preventing the deletion and if if the check for deletion si done on the server or client-side .... If pop3 doesn't support it, I suppose the client-side, server would be better, but ot's good enough for me. Ofcourse you'll have to download them again and again, while you may have the mails already on your lan ... then a little server is better I suppose like mentionned above. I've never done it, but think it should be possible that you mount your partition .. suppose home ... remotely, and then you'll haev all yourcustomosiations also on you laptop...and also your mail. Ofcourse this will cost you bandwidth....better is that you rsync or so your home/mail-directory with the computers. For example when you start your laptop .. you could rsync you home-directory (if you want) ..if not you could use your old configuration. and is it maybe possible to use rsync in evolution or so? I think considering rsync is also an intersting option.
  18. Just some info. Although it doesn't maybe matter anymore ...I BELIEVE 3com is founded or something by a/the? inventor of ethernet. But it's a standard.
  19. Could be interesting. Mayeb teh dialup-stuff can also be used for any kind of internet-connection. It let's you control who can make a connection and who not. And maybe group-passwords are also interesting and ofcourse the userpasswords are also interesting :) (-1 values makes the password never expire).
  20. Eclipse has a C++-plugin, but uit could be slow sometimes. It's written completely in java and I used it already and it is VERY nice, certainly for java .. but it has a C++-plugin, maybe worth trying out. I was thinking about why not compiling the eclipse-code with gcj...That would maybe make it not so slow at times.
  21. I just downloaded the latest code from Xfree86. Ibn the beginniong I was doubting about choosing between teh version at freesektop.org and teh Xfree86. I haven't yet taken a good look at Xouvert, but the last time I checked them, they just splitted up the code, mayeb now they are further . Time to check upon them again. I didn't choose for freesektop.org-version, because I believe there isn't yet any nvidia-driver..but I could be wrong on this. Happy new year for the rest.
  22. You can do it with usb, but when I read some stuff about it ... I think it's better for ethernetwhich is teh normal network stuff. The usb:pc-to-pc, works with polls (like a mailbox: one end puts something in to it annd the other looks at his mailbox at somtimes and pulls teh info out of it ). It's mroe cpu-intensive and not so effective as ethernet I think. So, if you could I would certainly first try the ethernet-connection if you have choice.

    gnomemeeting

Hi, I'm searching for a compatible windows-client for gnomemeeting and not netmeeting. Why? To talk to netmeeting I have to open up my complete firewall and it doesn't support speex-codec (I could install speex-codec, but can't let netmeeting recognize it ). Anyway the firewall-thing is also bad enuogh on it's own. Anybody knows a nice-looking, good-working windows-client that supports speex, supports teh tunneling-stuff(H.245-tunnels) like in gnomemeeting?? I onluy found myphone, but am not yet sure if it works. I also used teamspeak, but gnomemeeting, ..is designed more for this stuff and would like to use this ... but a more compatible windows-client is appreciated. Thanks.

    Quick question

By placing firewalls inside your network, you can protect computers a litle bit from eachother if one should be infected afterall.
  25. P.S.: can someone delete this post..it was in the wrong topic...
