I have USB cradle for my m505! Settings Configure KPilot Set Speed 115200 Don't think I did anything else in 9.0 you choose a connection type. There is a setting for USB m505 but I don't think you have to in the new KPilot.

The names for destop icons suck! Thats something I want to change too. The scanner icon is a bit naff too. I'm pretty sure it can be changed though.

I'm not really in a position to make an honest comparison as my installs of RedHat 8 Slackware 9.0 and Mandrake 9.1 have all been different I've had the most services running under Mandrake which probably slows it down a good bit. I'm never that consistent in my opinions either! I wanted to play DVD's on my desktop a while ago and I eventually go libdvd_whatever for K7 and playback was much better. Wish I could remember where!

I've played with Debian, and absolutely could not get ADSL without recompiling the kernel. Libranet is IMO the way to go for Debian like system. Although I couldn't get ADSL there either I know people in the UK who have. I've just finished a couple of days with Slackware people who rave about it... WHY? I did get everything I wanted to work. BUT it did have some stability issues and it's implementation of KDE 3.1 was a little shakey. pkgtool was quite good but I don't know that it was any better than rpm_dependency_hell it certainly threw me a few wobblers. If mandrake folds I might try Lycoris, if that doesn't suit I'll head to Libranet.

The latest version of Kpilot 4.39 (Branch) supplied with 9.1, works really well. At last I can synch with AvantGo without resorting to the prettier but somewhat clumsy Evolution. Way to go! Billy boy, your days are numbered.

I had redhat on this machine slow laptop and it was slow but I had Slackware 9.0 (i386) on it too and it was quite nippy. Optimising for a particular archetictecture probably makes a difference but I'm not sure it's worth worrying about. Though I'd probably pick SuSe over Slackware if I had too. Slackware lasted all of two days! It was quicker than 9.1 though I have more services running now.

I just realised I specified (ish) / 500 /swap 400 /usr 4000 /var 1000 /home 8500 what I've got is / 5000 / swap 128 /home 8000 and a bit ?? how srange is that! Lets hope its lack of familiarity and not a serious problem. I've even got sound working so I'm gonna leave it in peace.

I reinstalled, and it's a lot better this time. I forgot to set the BIOS to handle PnP Sound still not working though.

Im using an alcatel usb adsl modem so maybe I cannot be of help. But there are probably others who can. In the UK adsl services for home users only provide static IP address. People on this board can't help you without a full description of your adsl service and hardware. If you've still got rc1 on a machine that might be worth looking at the configuration. Good Luck!

I haven't installed on desktop yet. Just on laptop. I hate that installer it's awfull individual package selection took so long I gave up. Install went OK but slow. 3 hours! It's a slow machine but I installed 9.0 in about 1hr 15. It took 15 minutes for post install configuration to cease being a blank gray box on screen. ADSL is working, sound isn't. Open office takes a good 5 minutes to load and characters take a few seconds to appear on the screen. It might be ok on a desktop. But I can't live with that on my laptop. I couldn't work like that. Back to Slackware for Will's laptop.

I haven't tried it yet but: check your username is in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl eg: user "username" username and password /etc/ppp/peers/pap-secrets /etc/ppp/peers/chap-secrets eg: 'username' * 'password' check your vpi vci numbers are in /etc/peers/adsl as well eg: pty "/usr/bin/pppoa3 -vpi 0 -vci 38" These are UK numbers . checlk /etc/ppp/options eg: lock noipdefault persist noauth usepeerdns defaultroute finally check that the file resolv.conf exists in /etc/ppp/ as well holds a line(s) nameserver <string of numbers> this line usually appears twice Don't forget to su to root to edit or create thes files. Get back if its still not working

Not just Mandrake rpm distros in general I'm sorry to say. Clean install is always best. Even when I don't format /home I generally delete a lot of the hidden files before hand.

I'm currently grabbing all three discs and getting 57KBs so it should finish in approximately 8-10 hours say 7.15pm 12hrs at the outside. Mind you things will change if that mirrror gets real busy during the day. I have upload speed of approx 128 Kb/s (allegedly) so I can let some one have a disk I guess if you give me instructions!

Uninstalling tar ball installation> I haven't done that in ages, I THINK go into the directory you extracted from the the tarball. Where you typed ./configure make make install su to root and type make uninstall. That should be it sorted.

It's great the way your all waiting for me to experiment with MY hard drive! :D I need to do something soon I guess. Scoopy the maxtor utilities did find and fix a few small problems and when I rebooted no buzzing! I'm a bit happier but I think I'm goona change hard drives anyway. Maybe I'll keep the old one for experimental installations.

I hate to be obvious but: USB cables aren't that substantial, I'd swop the one you've got at the moment, with another cable. My scanner went weird after I ran across the cable with a vacumn cleaner! To get a good connection in the the USB socket on the back of my old machine I had to remove the metal plate which the ports stick through at the back of the case.

Have a good look in sane files. /etc/sane.d (from memory) and check the file for your scanner. Some of the paths for various scanner nodes are incorrect. Sometimes the name of the scanner node is incorrect. My scanner works perfectly since 8.1 but I used to have have to change scanner to scanner0 in the epson file in /etc/sane.d I've always had USB scanners so I can't be more specific.

Thanks scoopy, it is a maxtor, drive is behaving itself for the moment but it's making me nervous! I have a new one ready to go if I can get the original cloned/imaged/copied.

Basically I just want to recreate my XP installation on a new HD. I'd prefer it on NTFS which is, IMO a good bit more stable than FAT. The easiest might be some of the tools that come with hard drives : Maxblast or Disk Wizard. I'm just reluctant to purchase software for what might be a one-off job. AFAIK these are basically copy utilities so they take a long time. I've got the feeling that the longer it takes then failure becomes more likely. Acronis looks good so if I can think of a couple of jobs for it I might invest. The hard drive is behaving at the moment so I did an afternoons worth of cd-burning to save everything I could think of to CDR Even compressing my less important stuff and leaving out my mp3s (which are all on cd anyway) its 5 disks! I guess until I get it sorted I'll save my coursework to CDRW as I'm working.
