    "System freeze"

I have had a lot of usb problems with mandrake and usb - right from 8.2 to 9.2 and now 10.0 Strangely at the same time i stried other distros which did not have the same problems. Mostly these were sytem problems or once when my phone modem on a serial to usb ftdi cable didnt work on 9.2 whereas it worked on 9.1. The same problem is there on the 10.0 2.4 kernel, although its not there on the 10.0 2.6 kernel.
  2. I dont want to go back to windows!!!!! My card did not work with the mandrake kernel in 10 official!! I downloaded a plain vanilla 2.4.26 kernel from lernel.org. and patched it with the latest bttv drivers from bytesex.org. then i added in the lck patches. then i recompiled and after several attempts (during which time my wife threatened to leave me several times ) got a working kernel with my pinnacle pctv pro red pcb mt2050 tuner working beautifully!!! Then i though of using the 2.6 kernel becuase its supposed to be better right? but now its not working. dmesg bttv output doesn't show any tuner id!!! Scantv seems to find the tuner and tune in quiet a few channels. but tvtime, xawtv all show a blue screen!! it owrked once but then now it again doesn't. I can't pinpoint the problem!!! I am sorry you cant get the card to work and even more sorry you went back to windows. If i find a solution ill post it here for you to go back to MDK which seems to be a nice distro. Let me try this with the latest 2.6 kernel and the latest bttv driver. Only thing is i am afraid of breaking something in my MDK with a kernel that does not have all of MDK's Pathces applied. Like software suspend!! Ill really appreciate it if soemone points me in the right direction!!! Regards Kunal
  3. can you "modprobe bttv tuner =33 and card=52" also with tuner=33 and card=39? This way the bttv driver may work. I am trying to solve my own pinnacle pctv probelems so maybe i can help if you give me the dmesg output for these two commands. Do you know which tuner is on your card? mt2030 or mt2050? give the full dmesg output. Also does your card have radio or stereo sound? Which is the sound output of the tv card? to the line in or aux or internal? Can you provide this info?
  4. there are a few linux worms available. you can download and install them if you want. I dont think you get MDK RPMs though. :P Of course all the major distros have automatic updaters, some of them send some data to the distro server also. But you have the source available for most of them , and i suppose it wont be long before we get our fair share of worms and trojans.
  5. any comments about this? Amida Simputer Linux PDA
  6. there is a new pda in india running linux. read all about it on simputer looks good but i haven't tried it. Maybe ill switch from my palm zire 71 to this if its good.
  7. tough one. But im sure if i know waht kind of encryption is used then i can find a program that'll crack it.
  8. I havent deleted the passwords by mistake. I still use the passwords and still logon to the same sites using the passwords already saved. the Only problem is that there are quite a few sites i dont remember the passwords and one really important one. I dont think that i have used the master password option. I tried using a couple of programs to decypt the passwords. But no luck. I dont even know what kind of encryption is used. I think unless you supply the master password , it is not even encrypted, just obscured. Anyway ill be glad to have any pointers. Regards. Kunal
  9. HI does any body know if there is a way to recover saved but forgotten passwords from the mozilla password manager? Like the many varities for windows which recover from a password field in a web page or somehting similar? Is there anyway way to decrypt/un-obscure the password from the .mozilla directory? Thanks regards Kunal
  10. Athlon xps are at the end of their life. If you cant wait a year for athlon 64 or opteron on the nforce 3 motherboard then buy a 1700 thouroughbred athlon xp that you can easily overclock to 2200 mhz = about 2600+ PR. Unless you really cant wait, that is if its impossible to work on your system anymore. If you wait, then all even the normal athlon XP will be much cheaper. Processor power is such a waste these days---- unless youre into cad or 3d or video editing or running a database server. If your games are slow then invest in a good graphics card and a KT400A motherboard that supports 400 mhz FSb. Athlons start to lose bang for the buck once you cross 2400 MHZ or so. Thats because AMD is stretching its PR rating sytem too far now. Just my opinion. Regards Kunal Kumar
  11. You can buy cheap fans which run on 12 v dc. You can hook them up to the psu 12 v supply such as the one that goes in the hardisk. You can also buy more silent and reliable ac fans. I have two in my case and they run at 220 v and very silent. One is a three inch fan and one is a 5 or 6 inch or something fan. But to cool your cpu you should try to put a 7000 rpm fan on the cpu heatsink. You can also make a watercooled sytem if you have any time. There are lots of ideas and suggestions at www.overclockers.com Regards Kunal
  12. hi I have mozilla 1.3 from with my mdk 9.1. Recnetly i have been having some problems with the keys not working in the browser. ie all the forms i cannot fill in , and cannot type in the sddress bar. very wierd. I can open the <File menu, open web location>, and type over there. I can also use the mouse to get an url from the drop down list. This doent go away until i restart mozilla. Has anybody have the same problem or heard of his? Any solution? Regards Kunal
  13. why dont you put out here your exact motherboard and pc configuration. I have swap on the secondary slave , and yes there does seem to be a minor performance gain. But then i have enough memory so i hardly ever see the swap file used.
  14. well to get at usb scanners, sane can use either libusb methods or the kernel method. the kernel method uses the scanner .o moudule. now at this point is scanner.o loaded? remember you need it for /dev/usbscanner... access. I had many problems of the same nature when i tried to get my hp3300c work in linux.
  15. access thru /dev/usb/scanner..etc wont work. You both will have to unload scanner.o module and then scan using the libusb device. That uses the /proc/usb/.. devices. for more details read the sane-usb info page.
  16. oh and i forgot to add, wget is really good. I am using it right now to get the contrib rpms from ibiblio.
  17. d4x does have some problems. If i download a single file from many urls in parts, then even if one thread is slow, the download will not finish. ie, d4x will finish the parts from the fast threads and then wiat forever for the slow threads to complete. If you pause the download and then remove the slow servers from the list of alternates then it will many times restart the download. I had a hell of a time downloading mdk 9.1 . ended up downloading the disc 2 three times on my 12kbps puedo broadband lan internet connection. I still dont have the disc. No more patience. See this post. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...4052&highlight= If you have a slow connection then the best is to run only one thread and not split the file into parts. I got my disc 1 safely that way and disc 3 also.
  18. try modprobing the scanner.o module with : modprobe scanner vendor=# product=# (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x0105) not likely but. In your output here: comment out the /dev/usb/scaner.... (second last line) now unload the scanner module . rmmod scanner. now try the scanimage, or xscanimage or whatever. hope it works. If not uncomment the line you commmented out and then with the scanner module still unloaded try again to scan. when debugging you can easily use root for all tries just to eliminate the possibility of it being a permissions issue. Read the info page (info sane-usb).
  19. type "which oowriter" to find out where open office writer is. /root/.OpenOffice is just locally stored settings. usr/local is the right place dont worry.
  20. Been here yet? http://www.meier-geinitz.de/sane/gt68xx-backend/ also how about the latest bios?
  21. oh and i forget to ask, which motherboard are you using, system specs? And have you tried reseting the bios (clearing cmos) once?
