  1. Many thanks. I changed to mic 2 using alsamixer but no joy. Mic still doesn't work. No options work. If I killall artsd I get no sound in skype at all. so I guess it's off to find out how to do dmix....
  2. How do you do that? - uninstall arts?
  3. I can't see any way of changing the mic in kmix. How do you do that? I just see a mic - no 1, no 2.
  4. Thanks both. I have checked full duplex in KDE and max priority. If I run artsdsp -m skype as user I can hear echo123 (on speakers) but no mic input. If I run artsdsp skype as root I get /dev/dsp-1: Device or resource busy. In gnome, esddsp skype does nothing. My sound system works pretty well otherwise. Oh well, I guess I'll have to carry out all the instructions in the Skype for Linux FAQ. Seems an awful job though.
  5. I'm trying to set up Skype. I can connect but can't use mic. I ran sound recorder to test the mic and get "Failed to create Gstreamer encoding elements. Check your encoding setup" I have no idea what this means. Can anyone help, please? Mdriva 2005 LE AC 97 audio controller, Alsa driver BTW I get no sound in Amarok though sound in general works. Finlay
  6. Many thanks for this. That did the trick :D sorry for the delay in replying.
  7. Just upgraded to Mandriva LE 2005. Alsamixer works just fine but the gnome volume control slider defaults to bottom. When I select Open Volume Control I get the message "Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found". Anyone any ideas?
  8. Now Sorted. The answer was the latest driver 2.2 Many thanks for your help
  9. Many thanks for this. You are very kind to go to all this trouble. I've now printed the notes you gave me the URL to. I have a lot of work to do so won't be able to get into Linux till some time tomorrow. Whatever happens, I'll get back to you and let you know how I get on. Once again, thank you so much. You're a star. :D Finlay update: I followed your advice and the driver is now installed, the module loaded and the modem recognised....BUT I get all positive messages until "waiting for modem to be operational" then an error. eagleconfig -w fails to synchronise the modem. I'm going to send the readout from eagleconnect to eagle-usb4linux and see if they can help, though I find their documentation very techie.
  10. Many thanks for getting back to me. It's the 800 E3. I can't even get started because MCC doesn't even recognize the modem. All I get is "unknown device" I just booted into Linux and ran eagleconfig. Chose UK01 and got the message "loading module [error] so obviously something's preventing the module from being loaded.
  11. Yes I've been to this site before. I've downloaded two separate versions of the eagle driver to no effect. I uninstalled the driver I downloaded and installed the version that came with Mdk. Harddrake still lists the modem as an unknown device and no internet connection. The site seems full of people who've failed to get this thing working. It seems to be a matter of chance... Would you be kind enough to tel me exactly what you did to set it up?
  12. The big question is : How do I install the module? I thought the rpm would do that automatically.
  13. Further to this: I installed the rpm as you suggested. But still no module and no connection to the internet Please tell me what I'm doing wrong here. I have the modem connected (runs under Windows). run the rpm and it installs. Open MCC/ intenet/new connection. check ADSL check ppoA (I've also tried ppoe) check don't connect on boot (because the one time I checked connect on boot the boot process stopped at bringing up interface ppp0) check connect now and nothing happens. I get you don't seem to be connected to the internet. Reboot. Same. Am I missing some configuration steps? Is there a connection frontend? I'm getting my work done in Windows - but not happily. Any advice gratefully received and will be much appreciated.
  14. lsmod doesn't list the eagle... I didn't use the rpm but I'll give it a go. As to the modem I just took the one they sent me. There was no choice, I'm afraid. BTW here's a fuller description of what happened when installing the eagle driver: It got to "loading module OK" then "loading DSP and options [error]" I rebooted and did startadsl and got "modem is not operational, check eaglestat" . Did so and got eagle-usb module not loaded" Sigh.
  15. I recently received one of these from Tiscali. harddrake reports an unknown device. When I set up the connection using MCC it fails at testing the connection with "you don't seem to be connected to the internet"! I downloaded the Eagle-usb-2.00 driver and installed it though I get an error about DSL. (I have installed kernel-sources) When I run eaglestat I get an error message about pre-firmware and sometimes a message saying eagle-usb driver not installed. Surely I've just installed the eagle-usb driver! This is driving me mad. Can anyone help, please.
