  1. i have never used MNF (or its predecessor SNF) but im betting its also an rpm-based system so the usual # rpm -Uvh [package filename] in the directory where you downloaded the package will update your webmin installation (assuming you have all the dependencies). go to the old docs section* and read more about using commandline rpm to install/update your sytem. urpmi is just a wrapper for this function ciao! *http://mandrakeusers.org/docs/basics/index.html#is
  2. i also dont have a nvidia card but encountered that error. i am compiling gnucash this morning and noticed a line in the configure stage where i think i saw the glu.h file being referenced from the xfree*-devel package or something. what are you planning to use winex for? im no gamer but am using the wine cvs (or the daily build source package when im lazy) for whatever emulation task i need. i was able to run starcraft and medal of honor in it but prosavage's opengl performance suck so i end up terminating the game itself. :( ciao!
  3. a stable is that roof thingy with horses in it. :#: joking aside, stability is another fuzzy word. it might be stable for you but not for me or the other way around. mandrake is (generally) a bleeding-edge distro that is remarkably stable for being such. we can all preach that mkd is stable but there will always be somebody who will refute it because it didnt work out for them (it might be because of user-error but that is another story). ciao!
  4. i have encountered this once but im sure that urpmf glu.h ] would tell you the OpenGL-related rpm that contains that file (unfortunately a search in rpmfind doesnt reveal anything now :( ). another tip would be to install the libwine rpm. ciao!

    émail

the from is easily forged by spammers. i think this is called header munging so that replying to the email will just get you a bounced messages since the recipient doesnt exists. you could submit it to spamcop so it can parse where the email really came from. ciao!
  7. has anybody who have a prosavage video card played with this? everytime i see a gorgeous game screenshot i curse the day when we went for a motherboard with an onboard prosavage videocard. opengl executions on that card is horrible!!!! :( ciao!
  8. thanks onurb but i already read that from Scapegoat's post. :#: ciao!
  9. last implied presence was the image that aru found at the club-nihil website showing a browser with a tab pointed at the club-nihil board a month or so after tom disappeared. :#: ciao!
  10. care to post a link to that discussion?i cant seem to find this on distrowatch.com. thanks! ciao!
  11. civileme is based at anchorage, alaska. i knew this because during the first incarnation of MUB i asked him if he sees tom berger daily. :) anyway, mandrakeforum isnt closed yet, just removed from the main site since mandrakeforum and mandrakeclub would be merged and mandrakeclub already has a link in the main site. ciao!
  12. if one of the factors for the growth of profitability ratio is consumer confidence then yes i would say that mandrake will be better off with civileme back on board. my basis for that assumption is the amount of open-disgust that happened in the mandrake-newbie list when civileme let out unintentionally that he was on his last days with mandrakesoft. ciao!
  13. don't use KDE you dont have to, just install the necessary libs. :) (unless you meant you dont want to install the libs). ciao!
  14. i doubt it would do any good. the powers that be behind mandrakesoft has already spoken that they had to let civileme go along with some of the equally-important-but-not-so-famous mandrakesoft employees. civileme is another reason why i want mandrakesoft to be profitable. that man is INVALUABLE. ciao!
  15. This is dangerous and would fail if the utility in question needs to access a resource that is also owned by root (like logs and locks in /var). sudo is the package developed to address this problem without compromising security. the key here is limiting the possible avenues for attack and still accomplishing the task of sharing the root responsibility with somebody else. :) ciao!
  16. he is the man who's contribution and effort caused 8.2 to be the one of the top mandrake releases. civileme always presents a helping hand and when it comes to mandrake issues, his word carries enough strength that i have never seen anybody refute it. it was a sad day when mandrakesoft laid-off civileme. i still think they should have kept him. but then again, im no businessman. ciao!
  17. use the sudo package to grant normal uses access to utilities that are normally reserved for the root user. this way you wont need to give your users the root password. read the quick sudo tutorial at mandrakesecure.net. ciao!
  18. static means all functionalities needed by an app is built-in thus a larger binary file size. shared means that there is a central library that feeds the functionalities that an app may need thus reducing the size. the problem here is if an app needs a specific version to work and you either have an earlier or a newer version (even if the difference is just a minor bugfix release). when it comes to opera, there is usually two dependeny pitfalls: libpng and libqt. libpng is usually solved by installing libpng2 side by side with libpng3 but this is only if you are using an old version of an opera rpm. new packages arent affected much. the more difficult is the qt version. for me i just download the static qt version and doesnt fiddle with the additional task of praying if my opera installation would work. :) ciao!
  19. you forgot to deduct the effect of a new CEO/management. :) ciao!
  20. or maybe they are trying to iron out delivery kinks so the last two pre-order fiasco isnt repeated? ciao!

    JRE troubles

hmmn... im guessing you are booting straight to XWindows? if thats the case then your .bash_profile and .bashrc arent executed. if it doesnt work when you launch a browser from the menu then the app is probably launched without creating a new bash shell (thus not reading the .bashrc). bvc's tip on placing an entry in KDE's autostart scripts should work or you could try booting from runlevel 3 and starting X from there. use Xtart so you can choose which installed window manager to use. :) ciao!
  22. here you go http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.p...=Mandrake&arch= :) ciao!
  23. gramps just got up from his long nap :P :#: http://mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=3502 ciao!
  24. install kdevelop and its docs. last time i looked there was a tutorial in there but its very kdevelop-centric (but should give you enough taste for the development phase) ciao!
