  1. What about removables? Say I have a CD with RPMs on it. How do I register the CD's directory in the urpm database? Do I have to create a synthesis file? How? Yves.
  2. It seems I was wrong, after all. Variable bitrates do apply to ogg also. But you were, too :P : Ogg already can do that, though not in streaming mode it seems. Anyway, you might still be interested in that: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/listen.html http://www.xiph.org/ogg/vorbis/ Yves.
  3. Mdk8.1 on PC (server) and laptop (X terminal)
  4. Sorry, not the answer. I had a problem yesterday, and I'd like to have your point of view: is it the same problem as yours? My wife started the main PC (and GDM server) at about 8PM. At about 10PM, I started the laptop as a X client to the main PC's GDM (XDMCP). Usually, no problem with that (all in the same day). But this time, I wanted my wife to proof-read a document I just had printed to a file, so I did gv -display server:0 myfile.ps . While my wife read the document, I got disconnected (the remote window on the server remained opened), and went back to main PC's GDM login screen on the laptop. I looked at X's standard output, and saw something like: "too many keep-alive transmissions". I logged in again. Minutes after I logged in again, my wife closed my gv window on her screen, and resumed playing cards (aisleriot). Then suddenly (after some minutes playing again), her screen seemed to freeze, but mine (on laptop) was still perfect. I finished writing my document (so obviously main PC was still acting as server OK), and had to sudo /sbin/halt to remotely halt main PC (and I immediately did "Close session" on laptop), because the PC's keyboard didn't respond anymore (even NumLock and CapsLock did not alter the little green keyboard lights). Furthermore, when PC was halted, my Gnome background was still displayed on laptop. I had to CtrlAltBackspace to exit and cleanly halt the laptop. What do you think? Yves.
  5. What's wrong with my solution :? :?: I posted it several times, and it's just like I'm talking to the wind... Bastille-firewall allows you to apply different rules, based on the interface: there are trusted interfaces, semi-trusted interfaces, and untrusted interfaces. So ? Yves.
  6. 6 out of 7. Who's supposed to know that the common clocks that Unix uses celebrate clocking up 1 billion seconds at 0146 on 9 September 2001 ? :?
  7. Variable bitrates is a technic closely related to the way MP3 works (the aim is to reduce file size while keeping quality). Variable bitrates would make no sense for ogg files, because the technic is different. Ogg files are already the same quality (if not better) for a smaller size! MP3 and OGG use very different approaches to music compression. I suggest you go to OGG's home to read about the technology. Yves.

In Linux, if a key is recognized, you can make it execute any available command you want (xmms, mozilla, evolution...), and even make mouse buttons emulation! To know if the keys are recognized, make sure that xev is installed, execute it, click on it with the mouse so that it has focus, then don't move the mouse anymore because every move displays an event. Now type on each key, and note the info assigned to it. If nothing happens when you type on a key, then this key is unusable, at least with the keyboard layout you're currently using. Yves.

I may be stating the obvious, but... have you searched for documentation here: http://www.linux-laptop.net/ That's where I looked when I bought my laptop. Besides, there's usually a lot of information by searching Google with "<laptop name> linux". Eg: http://www.google.com/search?q=AOpen+1845+linux Yves.
  11. First, I'd only use a journaled filesystem, even for /. At home, I use ReiserFS and I'm happy with that. ---------- I'd put swap as first partition of the 10GB drive, and / as the second (and last) partition of this drive. If it is a server, then / can be split into /var, /tmp, and /. On the big disk, I'd only put one partition: /local with those symbolic links on first drive: /home -> /local/home /usr/local -> /local/local/usr /opt -> /local/local/opt You can add whatever you want to /local, eg: /local/shared-docs, /local/uploads, /local/downloads... Yves.

  13. The ATI rage128 chipset was the first to be 3D-accelerated in XFree4. It works with all modern Linux distributions because its driver for both 2D and 3D is included in XFree4. It works good and fast (IMHO). I have such a card, but it is AGP. I think that a PCI version exists, though. Note: There is only one problem: with Mandrake9.0, and only this version of this distribution, the rage128 chipset cannot be 3D accelerated because Mandrake9.0 has a DRI bug when used by this chipset.
  14. Sorry... I thought you were speaking about the cyrix machine...
  15. So basically, it comes down to knowing: what port is X using for XDMCP? If someone has the answer, I'm also interested. That being said, I use bastille-firewall because it is shipped with Mandrake8.1, which I use. In this firewall's config file, I can tell that ppp0 (internet) is untrusted, and eth0 (lan) is trusted. That way, firewall rules only apply to ppp0, so XDMCP works, and the lan is protected from internet by the firewall. I guess you can do something similar with your firewall. Yves.
  16. Short answer: You can. Long answer: :-) 1) On CD1, you'll find floppy images in a subdirectory. One of those images is an image to make the floppy boot the CDROM (if the system is unable to directly boot the Cd), and another image (probably named network.img or something like that) is to make the floppy boot CD1 from the network. I know this floppy image exist, but I never used it. Of course, you'll have to have a working network, with access to a machine with a shared CD drive (I don't know if it should be shared via ftp, nfs, or other) or partition with the CD's content. There should also be another floppy image to make the boot process look for packages on the local hard disk. 2) I use Mandrake 8.1. Mandrake 9.0 is said to be faster than 8.x. I installed 8.1 with X on a PentiumMMX-150 laptop with 32MB ram and 2GB hard drive. There's no problem. X is a little slow, but fast enough; very usable. I boot in runlevel 3, and startx only when needed. For long periods of time, I start X with a window manager: I have found IceWM to be the best window manager in performances and usability. For short periods of time with only one application, I directly start X with only this application, eg: startx /usr/bin/netscape All in all, I'm very satisfied with what I can do with this old laptop, which is also acting as a server (mail and FTP). Yves.
  17. chalex20's answer is the right technical answer. If you really want to do that, you just have to use the command he says. But "musically" speaking, such a convertion is awfull (double-loss in quality: first with mp3, next with ogg). It would be best for you to re-create your ogg files from the original CD/wav.
  18. I suggest you read this: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/msec.php. You may create your custom security level.

I can't say for Mandrake 9.0. I'm using Mandrake 8.1 with Gnome. There are two possibilities: 1- the standard way (Nautilus manages the desktop): Right-click on the desktop and click on CD: the Cd is mounted (if it is in the drive ) and a CD icon appears on the desktop with the CD name under it. Right-click on the desktop and click on CD: the Cd is unmounted (if it was mounted) and the icon disappears. Same for floppy (or any other removable media, I guess). 2- my way (I don't use desktop icons, only panels): I installed the drivemount applet twice (once for the CD, once for the floppy) in my main Gnome panel. I configured the CD applet so that on unmount, it also ejects the media. Each applet switches between an icon for the mounted state, and another icon for the unmounted state, so you always know if there's a media in the drive. When clicked while in mounted state, it performs an unmount, and when clicked in unmounted state, it performs a mount. Yves.
  20. MP in SMP means Multi Processor, hence your problem when you use a SMP kernel on a mono-processor. Linux is not all that hard to use. But very few hardware vendors do anything to help create good drivers for Linux, as they do for Windows. So Linux is good if your machine has compatible hardware, and bad if your machine has some incompatible hardware. That's the way it will be until vendors give the same support to Linux than they give to Windows. Yves.
  21. Exactly. Don't format /home partition (already existing), and do whatever you want with the other partitions (delete, create, resize, paint cool colors on it... no, not this one) Yves.

Very dangerous move. Always check the compatibility before buying. Usually good news. This should be OK. There are always problems with supermount ;-). I suggest you disable supermount anyway, and tell your brother it works like a Mac, except the drive is not 100% automated. Insert the disk, and mount it (graphically of course) to make the icon apear, and unmount it (still graphically) to automatically eject it. If you're not convinced, I think autofs is a better solution than supermount. You can expect problems with the modem, but only trying will tell you. Yves.
  23. I didn't :P I only read the news. I'll use it the day I install Mandrake 9.1  Yves.
  24. A firewall only does what it is said to do. If it is blocking a port you need, just unblock it. The problem is to find which port it is...
  25. I use bastille-firewall, and with this you can say which interface should be filtered and which interface should be trusted. Myself, I set ppp0 to be filtered, and eth0 to be trusted, so all ports are open between my PC and my laptop (eth0), but the firewall is active between my PC and internet (ppp0) Yves.
