  1. Isn't it the LBA thing ? (with 10.0CE, if the hd is configured as AUTO instead of LBA on the BIOS, there can be fixable problems. Even with FAT32 I thing. Well I've heard of the problem but I don't remember the fix. somebody else ? )
  2. Ahhhh. At last something that the French state do well. Very good news, that was a long time I didn't hear something clever from it :D ... but, but wait a minute ! it not done already, it's a project isn't it ? Ah ok. I understand. They are going to spend 5 to 10 years to do it, spend millions od Euro, the civil servant are going to go on strike to ask for special training, some rest to compensate for the extra work, and ask for some extra points on the mobile wage scale indexed on the status and seniority. Forget this news for now, that's a wast of time. Let's speak about it again when it will be done..if ever.
  3. The question is: is Mandrake 10.0 for the masses ? The masses have Winmodem. If Mandrake 10.0 don't support Winmodem it's not for masses. Ok, better have a hardware modem, it's cheap etc.. but the masses don't change there modem. They got an illegal copy of Win98 instead. That's sad but its like that. I started with a Winmodem too, back to Red Hat 7.0 or 7.1. It's as if that was easier at this time than now. At least the conexan drivers were free if not GPL. Everything is improving on the Linux world but it's as if Winmodem is the only exception... Well to be fair, as the driver for Winmodem were kernel dependant, each time a new kernel was out, I had to wait a few weeks if not month that the Winmodem driver be release too. That's perhaps what may happen for 10.0 witch had a major kernel change: 2.6. So that can take more time... Also, if you have a Winmodem, you have no choice but start with Linux with dual boot with Windows so you can go on the internet where the drivers are. Once you have Linux work with Winmodem, you can delete Windows but better be sure a new version of the kernel is supported and download the driver before changing anything.
  4. No, please don't change anything: that's the way I like it Thanks :)
  5. iffy ? not on the dictionary :( I guess that means bad or something like that ? well worked for me so that must be good :P
  6. an other way is to go on MCC Network config and check the "hotplug" option somewhere (I'm not on Linux currently and the problem is solved anyway :P )
  7. for the cheap ASUS A7V8X-MX, the keywords to search are: try A7V8X-MX then try VIA KM400 VIA VT8235 CE VIA UniChrome Graphics ADI AD1980 VIA VT6103 you must find them on Google/Linux, it may give you a good idea of the potential problems trying just to find "VT8235" I found that http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/179103 there is many other that must reply your questions. good luck
  8. I guess your DOS game use VESA VBE. It's a set of 16 bit functions located in the bios of the graphic card, accessible through int 10h with ax=4f..h, used to have informations about the card, initialize it, access the video memory and so on.. May be the ATI Linux driver set badly a register on the card that is cleared by a VESA function ?
  9. You should get the chipset for all the integrated part: Northbridge, Southbridge, video, audio, and else, everything, and search on http://www.google.com/linux what is said about those components.
  10. What ? what do you mean ? ;) Do you mean I'm curently on Windows (connected through a Linux server he ho !) I have a fixed IP address everybody can see ? ok you're right: my next question in this forum will be: how to  me :D
  11. had you ran ad-aware or any anti-spyware just after you installed the "stinky software" ? gowator: I know you know Wanadoo my parents got the Wanadoo ADSL pack eXtense When you install the pack, it installs the last version of IE, the last version of Outlook, puts icons everywhere, in the desktop, in the taskbar, in the start menu, in the Wanadoo folder, show you a little movie that show how to use the software and install the software, an app that runs in the background with witch you can do everything: you can retrieve your e-mail, browse the web with IE, configure your connection, it says mamy and daddy, everything.. err NOT mamy and daddy. And no choice: it's a all or nothing thing to install. Well no choice to uninstall either. My first reaction was to clean all that junk and to uninstall the e-mail client and everything that runs on the background. But when I ran the uninstaller, it first asked why you want to uninstall it (a poll) then it also unistalled the driver for the modem and the Network config... but didn't uninstalled IE or Outlook or the cookies or ... a spyware ! How do I know there is a spyware ? well after I uninstall the pack, I ran ad-aware witch found a new spyware. doubt  Then as the driver for the modem was not there anymore (even in \Windows\System) and the driver can't be found on the cd by Windows (was probably compressed) I had to reinstall the pack to get the driver on the web ok ? To be sure I ran ad-aware again. And here it is: the spyware was there again ! So I got the driver on the web .................... 4 hours ! 4 hours just to set a clean connection and e-mail client (Mozilla) without all there f$@~& software ! roland
  12. We do not condone such things. Illegal downloading is bad! yeah. If everybody had to pay for the illegal M$ stuff they have in there box, Microsoft would be even richer but at the same time probably millions of persons may seriously consider a switch to Linux... so lets see what would happen when Longhorn will be released with all its "trusted computer" things that would make illegal copy impossible. Going OT: Unfortunately, I'm sure Microsoft, devilish as they are , are going to make it soft during several years, collecting informations during that time, and when they will decide that now we have to pay, that would be too late, people would be completely locked with there own files encrypted, proprietary format that OSS can't read because of software patent and all those things. Better be ready when Longhorn will be released. Are you ready ? Are you ready for the big battle ?
  13. I don't care if Linux sites have Microsoft advertising... as long as it's clear that it's advertising and as long as the site stay independent and don't exchange freedom for money. Else, it's not a Linux site it's a Microsoft site disguised as a Linux site. Not fair, those Microsoft guys really impress me: they are killers. Better take any advertising with a grain of salt. That's what I teach my children all the time. Better also take magazines or website with a grain of salt. When I watch at my wife's magazine, they are full of skin cream or mineral water advertising. Are they going to say that the cream or the water have no effect and don't worth the money ? I don't think so. Edit: I prefer there is Microsoft advertizing on those site. At least I know it can be biased. It would be worse if the site was funded by Microsoft but without advertising so we don't know it can be biased. Perhaps there is some like that ?
  14. Super parrallele computer have a lot of theorical power but are difficult to program to take advantage of all this power. Anyway that's an other sign that China is doing very well.
  15. ok, I saw your other post, I didn't found the 2.6.3-9 kernel too. Probably a CE update that had been updated again: CE runs 2.6.3-13 now :( Arrrrrr those things that are supposed to be simple and turn time wasting you can have a look there or there look at those sites, try again or reconsider VeeDubb opinion -_-
  16. Assuming you use KDE: Open a X console, su as root, run konqueror that'll launch konqueror as root, select a file or directory, right clic, property, ....
  17. no: find the 2.6.3-9 kernel and install it. Don't forget to install the 2.6.3-9 kernel sources also, I think it's needed. edit: ... or see if conexant also have a driver for the 2.6.3-7.
  18. roland

    Samba trouble

Hi, one solution (there is more elegant ones): edit /etc/samba/smb.conf that way: [global] .... security = share .... [homes] .... [a_shared_directory] path=/home/samba/a_shared_directory guest ok = yes writeable = yes ..... Set the owner of /home/samba/a_shared_directory as nobody, nogroup Now you can read/write in /home/samba/a_shared_directory [edit].....AFTER you have restarted samba: service smb restart (If I remember well)
  19. Well my own personnal experience is different from VeeDubb's Before I went ADSL I used a Conexan winmodem without problem. Just you have to know that the drivers are kernel dependent. So I guess hsfmodem-6.03.00lnxt04051300full_k2.6.3_9mdk-1mdk.i586.rpm is for the 2.6.3-9 kernel. Check your kernel: uname -a as root.
  20. Well I don't know much MandrakeClub. At least it's convenient and a little more than that. I don't know if it worth $60, but if you use the product, it's obvious that it worth $60. Concerning the service: If MandrakeSoft have money, they can provide good service, then more people are going to subscribe to the club, then they are going to have more money, then they can provide even better service, then ........
  21. So, with all the Mandrasoft's stocks you have, you are going to be rich ?
  22. hi, first see if your modem is supported, then have the maximum of datas from your isp (DNS addresses, type of connection). For that if they don't have any faq about Linux? you can have a look on how to set up a connection on OSX, the explanations are generally more documented than with M$ Win. If your isp does not officially support Linux, and if you can't change of isp ;), say you try to set a connection with Linux only once it works. Else they are going to say it's linux fault and don't care.
  23. have you been there conexan drivers ?
  24. first, for a better result you should make a separate post for each problem. For example the internet connection trouble would be in its right place in the networking forum. Errrr ... I restart first of all hello and welcome. :) Then about the internet connection: get the IP address of a website, ie google.com (ok its 216.239.37.99) then, when you are in trouble, enter a console (Alt-F1), log as root and ping with the IP address: ping 216.239.37.99 If it replies that means that's a name resolution problem. In your case as it's the XP box that is the Internet connection server, (usually it's the Linux box), I'm afraid I can't help much more. Somebody may be able to help more here. But knowing that its a name resolution trouble is already a good start. By the way, when everything works well, still in a console as root, report here what the commands: route and ifconfig -a say. Do the same when the server does not respond any more so we can compare. Oh and to return to the GUI from the console, first logout from root (logout command) then type Alt-F7) (I don't know your knowledge so forgive me if I say some obvious things to you)
