  1. If you have it installed. Then it should be The K>configuration>KDE>lookandfeel>mosfetsliquid
  2. From what I understand Xp has its own boot loader. So when you loaded 98 first everything was fine. When you next loaded Xp it detected 98 and gave you a boot loader so you could use each one. Thus your Hda5 does not have a boot loader like Xp needs since it was placed in Hda1 infront of the 98 OS. Then when you loaded linux it placed its boot loader in and you made it point to each os eventhough it only needs to point to the new Xp bootloader and the linux Os. From what I understand you can either remove the Xp boot loader(I couldn't begin to tell you how or if it can be done) or you can edit your lilo and remove the Hda5 Xp entry and rename the Hda1 98 entry to say 98/Xp instead of just 98. I would do it the simple way and just rename the Hda1 entry.
  3. Yes for everything. You'll be running a little slow but then again any GUI is a resource hog. You need to goto the Nvidia site and download the installer for the vidio card after you have the system up and running.
  4. Does KsCD play the file or at least give you a track listing? If you started it from a command line you'll get a few error messages if it can't run for some reason. And what do you meem by busy? You should be able to adjust Aumix without something else running.
  5. Usb modems are real problem with linux wireless or not. I don't have one but some of the suggestions I've heard are.... Don't keep unplugging and replugging the usb device. This just makes harddrake try to find it again and as you've found out it doesn't do a great job. Turn off all plug and play in the bios. If the modem has an ethernet plug get an ethernet card and use that.(you have wireless though and it probibly doesn't have that option.) Even the best are under 25 dollers. And they work all the time. This also saves a USB hookup for the important stuff like scanners and cameras. You can shut off hardrake in the Mandrake Controle Center to keep it from looking for new hardware everytime it boots and everyfew seconds while running.
  6. How did you try to get it working? What apps were you trying?
  7. I think this is all the patent offices fault. They will patent alything thing as long as they can't understand it. One nice example is they let a patent on the BYPRODUCT of a drug and stomic acid through for a drug company. Now no company can make a drug that causes the same byproduct. They have let a patent on the effect of a program stand. Now no program that has the same effect, no matter how far removed the underlying code is, can ever be used without their fee and approval. Heck why don't I just patent the heating effect of electricity passing though a chip. Then every prossessor out there will have to pay me for heating the room. Heck i could charge every user for the heat. Now the fee will be small but hey I figure 1 doller from everyone each year is a nice way to retire.
  8. Hate to jump in but have you downloaded and installed the latest VIA drivers. They (MIGHT?) have a driver to fix your problem.
  9. Wow even the fancy new hardware works. I'm even more impressed with linux now than ever. I guess 5.1 sound will just have to be on my next machine. Great to hear you got it all working. What is S/P Dif used for other than just big sound?
  10. Have you tried the realtek driver? I know it sounds stupid to ask but it must be done. Just for fun i tried looking some of the stuff up and found little good info for you. You seem to be running hardware newer than the latest kernel release. If all else fails you might try the new kernel thats out. Support might be better handled. If all else fails you might try getting a kernel older than 2.4.13

    ProFTPD

Samba is used to connect to your other machines on you local area network. This lets you share files from one computer to the next. From what i can gather ProFTP should be used for sharing files to rest of the world. I use samba to play mp3's off my other machines all the time.
  12. Let it go through the install mode. Then see what happens. Another way of making a desktop icon is to right click on the desktop then create new>link to application. A little faster than drag and drop. You also get to choose the icon and a few other options.
  13. You should just have to burn them as an image. Don't open them up or unzip them. Burning them as an image automaticly extracts them to the propor format and files.
  14. I think Sco's strategy is to throw as much chille on the wall and hope to stay up till the jello hits the fan. Their already loosing almost all potentialy new customers to linux now, what could they possibly have to loose. It's kind of like me getting into the ring with Mike Tyson for a million bucks. I'll take the first hit then be out and loose the fight. In the end I walk out of the stadium with my million, minus one tooth. IF I hit him and win then just look at all the great press and endorsments I'll get. I can't loose in a deal like this. Sign me up. Above all else I think we as Linux users should just keep on doing what we have been doing. Promoting the great product we're using.
  15. Actually I don't think RedHat could go through an internal audit of the kernel. Seeing as SCO will not let a copy of the offending code out no one knows what to look for or remove. Then again SCO doesn't want any code removed, even though they agreed to this when they placed their own copy of linux out under the GPL. If the code was removed then everyone would just update and SCO would get no license fees from it in the future. Though they might be able to get past fees from those with the money. I think that the fact that SCO has not released the code even to European courts tends to point to the fact they have no real clame. Even if the code was there they probobly don't have the evidence to prove they themselves didn't release it. The fact that SCO executives have just reciently dumped a ton of stock for a nice profit tends to point to the idea they might not be around much longer. Just watch to see if the same executives leave the company in a few months. Tank the company and run with the money. Nice pump and dump.
  16. Looks like the big dogs are starting to get a little testy. Ding Ding. Round one! I say Open Source takes them in five. How about you guys.
  17. If you configured your vidio settings during the install you should just need to type in startx If that don't work post back.
  18. I don't think M$ has a chance in the world of stopping Linux. Linux has no real center. No target for M$ to shoot for. No company to buy out. No intellectual property to use to stop Linux development. The GPL lets the linux development teams just rewrite any questionable code. Every time M$ makes even a mention of Linux the number of people that want to find out about linux grows. Just like in politics "even bad press is good". Everytime M$ or any company (RIAA) makes a stab at restricting/monitoring your use of your computer, purchased software, or any other media or hardware. Linux looks better and better. Freedom is easy to see, its oppression thats hides behind something. Heck even M$ employies are trying it out at home. Linux is a river. You can just hold it up a little. But you can't stop it. It the end it always wins.
  19. Just hopped in and its still there. I'm on Ohio roadrunner. if that helps narrow anything down.
  20. In quite a few years on building my own. I've found that the greatest and most notisable increase in speed comes from having the largest onboard cach as possable. You'll find that Celeries come with the smallest cach in the Intell line. The difference in a 512 kb cach and a 1 mb cach is about 15 to 20% in noticable speed increases. All at the same clock speed. Some AMD's come with 2 meg the last I looked. That and as few memory chips as possable. The more sticks of memory on the MB the slower the system. Sometimes the increase in memory by adding chips doesn't help in the long run. Also if you want real speed increases go with a faster hard drive setup. As you can probobly tell I quit trying to over clock because the heat was just causing way to many crashes. Why should I spend even more cash on a new cooling system? I have found that big numbers really don't mean big speed. But they do always mean bigger heat.
  21. AMD only for me. My wallet thanks them daily. :D
  22. How fast is that K6 of yours? Mine takes almost a full minute to go from off to KDE up and running and I'm on an AthlonXp 1200. I don't find it to long but then again win98 only takes half as long. Win98 is also a 7 year old OS and mandrake 9.1 is only months old and closer to XP than win98 is size and ability.(I think Mandrake is bigger better and badder than anything else really)
  23. The AMD/Intell speed thing started quite a while ago. Every time AMD came out with a new prossessor speed to match or beat Intel. Intell would one up them. In the begining this was acceptable to AMD since they were just starting in the besktop cpu area. But after a while it got quite obvious to them that Intell was cooking the speed books. Everytime the speed nembers were reached intell brought out the same chipset and said they just upped its speed. Then AMD realized the test was made up by Intell and Intell started to change the test to favor themselves. (even blind people could see this one coming) So AMD tried making their own tests but no one bought the idea of a new test so they just gave up and started stating that their prossessors did the same amount of calculations (or flops) as Intell did never mind what the FSB or CPU "speed" was. So your Xp 1900+ does the same work as an Intell 1900 even though the actual numbers are less. Since then Intell has switched back to their older form of testing and calculating speed. I've used both and can't tell the difference unless I'm REALLY taxing the system. Games run the same. The only time I ever really noticed a difference was in intencive CAD 3d solid modeling. You might notice it if you ever compile your kernel/distro from source. But just how often are you going to tie up your computer for a weekend?
  24. Grandal have you tried running UT in root? I only ask this because you mentioned that tux only runs in root. I was thinking that maybe you have a permitions problem with the vidio some how. I'm probobly off but its a grasp at a straw.
  25. Personally I would have just hired those guys and made it the linux end of Blizzard. It would have/could have, been a great teamup. But then again that growing linux market would never pan out. Not even in the Asian markets. :o
