    RAID-Solution wanted!

I want to run 2 80 Gig drives in a raid configuration. Hardware raid is an option. Would it be better to go for hardware raid if I've got the option or will software raid work just as well. Also I've never encountered a raid machine in my life so I know nothing about it except the principles behind it. How easy is it to set up for one. Do you need to download special software or does linux natively support it. Many many questions Can someone help...?

    SAMBA users

With SAMBA when I created a share in the past a normal user could log in into the share so to speak. But I then ran into some problems, no idea how but I did. So my question is how do you create SAMBA users and set them up. Also I'm guessing that those users would then only be valid from a remote box and would also not be able to log into my box at all locally...!!

    home network

The NFS is ***REALLY*** easy too. Just use webmin and create an nfs export. then, mount that NFS export on the other machine and presto.
  4. Whats the link so that we can see for ourselves for one. 9 out of 10 times when I've had issues like that it has been permissions on the files themselves. make sure you've enabled read access to "other" on the file.
  5. Squid is a proxy if I'm not mistaken. I think you might be looking for something called squid guard. It's a controller for squid. Thats what my old school used to control it's internet usage... At the time when I was just a user it used to really grate my carrot. Actually, I might download it and start using it myself. Users on this network can really tick me off at times, especially when they do things I asked them not to do. Anyways, check it out.
  6. Can you do as much with it as you can with fluxbox....? I mean the whole slit thing and the icons and all that...? Also can you get or load some kinda "taskbar"....? Just wondering... I'll browse the page some more and see what I can find but if you could answer any of those questions it would be cool.... So far I am liking the screenshots...!!
  7. I would love the link.... I **really** like transparency.......!!!!!
  8. Ok now this is all beginning to make sense......... I know about the 3D-Desktop thing...!! idesk doesnt work very well I've found. Seems, unstable. Not really sure how to explain it, I just don't like it. Maye there's something wrong with my configuration...!! I will try all that other stuff as soon as I get fluxbox again. I redid my system but last time I installed fluxbox I urpmi'ed it and forgot to save the urpmi downloaded files. Hopefully by this weekend....!!
  9. So he put that into his slit file.... YES ? and when he startx fluxbox GKRelm starts too... Hmmm interesting....!!! Very Cool
  10. What is GKRellm exactly...?
  11. I still dont know what the slit in fluxbox is...!!
  12. How did you get your fluxbox looking so cool... That is very wicked, but what I mean is that you cant see all your open apps on the "taskbar" and easily switch between the 2 by just clicking on the icon in the taskbar. eg when I surf I often do a million other things 2. I normally run minimum 2 apps per desktop and I use 4. Now when Xchat is maximised on desktop 2 and xmms behind it it is not all that easy to switch to xmms. In KDE and Gnome all you do is click the icon on the taskbar and you switch. As for IceWM I find that often it causes the system to do funny things that otherwise normally dont happen with other WMs. eg. I press CTRL + ALT + BCKspace to kill the X-server, but then my keyboard doesnt respond once the X-server has died. Also seem to have to restart the X-server more often with it when doing just normal things... So yeah... I dunno. maybe its just with MDK 9. But I'm still using it which says alot for IceWM...!!
  13. Switch Applications..... like switch from OOWriter to xmms.... Know what I mean...?
  14. Ok... I am still confused... I just started with fluxbox... its still very new to me... What is the slit...? I have discovered a WM than has the functionality of KDE and Gnome but not quite as system intensive. IceWM. >>> Once you figure out how to configure it and stuff its pretty cool. My problem with fluxbox is that it is so difficult to do simple things like switching between apps or desktops. Sure there are shortcut keys and blah blah blah you're all gonna give me many reasons why it is easy but honestly... It is a GaJillion times easier to switch between apps in KDE or Gnome and thats what makes them so popular. I think thats where IceWM fits in nicely, its just a little unstable...!!
  15. I have no idea what you just said or what you're getting at... explain a tad further pleez...!!
  16. If ya peeps find a way... i would really like to run my KDE panel in fluxbox...!! Like it more than gnomes one
  17. Mybe at the same time you could send me that java howto seing as your site is down...!! ta -AA
  18. james@tuksfm.co.za I noticed your site has been down for a while... pain in the ass man...!! yeah... also maybe a simple howto with that rpm...!! thanx AA
  19. Why dont you just install MDK 9... I am sharing a dial-up right now as i am typing this messge and it was really basic..... It's really quite easy to do if you use the Control Centre.....?
  20. Well, it is not possible to just install the old tarballs over the new ones tried that... but the make uninstall does work. I remember doing that a while ago when i first started fiddling with the nVidia drivers... Just one more question though... does any body know off hand where they are installed to...? Or where i should run the "make uninstall" command from to be more precise...???
  21. To remove the old drivers can i simply install the old ones the same way as i installed the new ones.... ie, do i 1st have to remove the newer drivers first before i can install the old ones...? if so... what command would i use to remove the old ones... i used the tar.gz 's to install my drivers.....??
  22. The new drivers seem to be much better though for games and stuff.... Did you switch back to the older ones... are the older drivers working better for you...!!
  23. aze >>> that quake3 problem you had... well that is just the sound initialization which tends to take one hell of a long time in KDE. I have the same problem. Sometimes it takes upto 5 minutes. Quake3 wont have that problem in the other WM's. when I want to game i start Enlightenment with Xtart. quake3 and quake1 for that matter is much more happier under a different WM
