  1. This is very important. I want to update Gnome but I can't because of a stupid urpmi error.
  2. Ok sometimes (often enough to annoy me) the screen flickers and I'm dropped to the console mode. I login, type startx and X doesn't start. I don't really know what causes this (usually when I play with alt+tab - no I don't do that for fun). All I have is this xorg log. 5. Hmm..... good idea but what about the hdlist ??
  6. Urpmi downloaded a lot of packages but something happened and it stopped ( astupid error). I'd like to resume the update but .. not from scratch. How can I use the packages that are in /var/cache/urpmi so I don't have to download everything again ?
  7. I'm thinking if Linux needs some kind of maintainance works. I dunno, maybe this is just a Windows obsession (like the AV one) but I was thinking about cleaning the system of obsolete, temporary and useless files etc. For example in Windows you needed to: defrag, scan for viruses, clean, defrag, scan for errors and optimize the registry, remove adware and many other things. I understand that the Linux FS doesn't suffer from fragmentation but what maintainance job should I do ?

I see that SWAT is good to configure Samba. Indeed an useful tool. Thx for your help. All this trouble has its good side. If you don't break something you won't know how to fix it.
  9. Aa... am I blind or where is the smb.conf attached ?

OK since I couldn't wait and the problem was very annoying I removed Samba and reinstalled. Then, I reconfigured it with ksambaplugin and now the problem is solved ... but I'd still like to give SWAT a try. Thx for your support.
  11. There are drivers for ext2/3 for Windows, you know... Check this out: sourceforge.net/projects/ext2fsd uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/ext2ifs.htm And there are others ... I find them very useful when I'm in Windows so I can access Linux files quickly.

I have installed SWAT but it doesn't work. My browser (Netscape) tells me that the connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost:901. Mozilla and Epiphany do a Google search lol.

I modified the lmhosts but it didn't have any effect. After reconfiguring my connection settings and solving the X server problem I see that nmbd is trying to assign the right IP class (192.168.1.*) but not the right IP I think ..... Look: [2004/10/24 17:50:12, 0] nmbd/nmbd.c:main(664) Netbios nameserver version 3.0.7 started. Why it is trying to assign me the Network server's IP I dunno. I guess the only option here would be to totally uninstall Samba and then reinstall. If this doesn't work I'll have to reinstall MDK Linux .... *sigh*
  14. Thx for the reply .... I reinstalled the NVIDIA driver and now it works...... You can imagine how frustrated I was when I wrote this post: I only modified some network settings and X failed on me. It's solved now.

    I'm invisible!

Ok it seems I have to tell you the whole story. I am part of a switched LAN of about 14 PCs which uses this internal IP class: 192.168.1.*. Recently, I connected my LAN's switch with another one (using an UTP cable) belonging to another network that uses a different IP class: 192.168.100.*. The problem is that I can't see the computers from the other network nor they can see me. Not even pinging works. In WinXP the situation is a little better. My normal IP is 192.168.1.17 so I added another one: 192.168.100.17. I'm still not able to see the computers from the other network but at least I can ping them. Having these results in WinXP I decided to do the same thing in MDK. I added another IP, 192.168.100.1. It was a big mistake since 192.168.100.1 was already taken (it was a stealthed server - I didn't know then since it didn't respond to normal ping). Anyway, not wanting to use the Gnome-System-Tools again (because there is a bug in one of them that makes some bad changes to smb.conf) I modified the etc/hosts file myself (manually). This is what fueled all my problems with nmbd and X. So now I have no nmbd and no X :( => no Linux. So I'm stuck with Windows. :((
  16. Due to nmbd problems I reconfigured my connection settings. I ran the MCC wizard and then restarted. When I booted Linux, X was not working. I'm invisible!

The agony has been here for about 4 days !! I use the KSambaplugin - a plugin for Konqueror. Nope. No, I used The Gnome-System-Tools to do this and then removed it manually (I deleted this line -- 192.168.100.1 Alex -- from /etc/hosts.) I think this started all the problems. The IP I am supposed to have is 192.168.1.17. The other one was an experiment ...... long story (2 networks with different IP classes). We don't use DHCP so why should I select AUTO ? I will try this ....... Thx for your support. I can't continue working on this because another big phat problem appeared. X is a moron and refuses to start. I will google for help. If I don't find any, I'll open another topic. I can get back to solving the nmbd problem only after I get X working.
  18. I don't think it's a Java problem .... I was able to browse all sites I wanted without Java (including /. and linux.com). Anyway if you want to install it go here: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=4548 It's a nice tutorial that has helped me install Java.

  20. I recommend you make an ext3 partition from Windows first (that is, if you want to dual boot), using Partition Magic. Then install Mandrakelinux to the ext3 partition. I've heard that Diskdrake or whatever it's called has some issues so it's better to be safe than sorry. B)

I have tried all of those commands but it doesn't work. I use GNOME and in GNOME System Monitor the nmbd process is not shown. Actually it appears to be stopped. But there is hope. This is nmbd's log (var/log/samba/log.nmbd) [2004/10/23 17:40:23, 0] nmbd/nmbd.c:main(664) Netbios nameserver version 3.0.7 started. Error was Cannot assign requested address [2004/10/23 17:40:23, 0] nmbd/nmbd.c:main(732) ERROR: Failed when creating subnet lists. Exiting. This is the problem. The IP address, 192.168.100.1 is already taken. My normal IP address is 192.168.1.17. I wanted to have an IP address in that subnet so that's why I ended up with this. Somehow nmbd is still trying to assign that IP. My question is: where is nmbd's configuration file located ? How can I prevent him from trying to take 192.168.100.1 ? All I want nmbd to do is assign my network name (Alex) to my IP (192.168.1.17).

Is there no one here that knows how to fix this ????
