You can skip the whole process, here are my experiences with my old Voodoo card: For some reason with MDK 9.0, if your Voodoo card is not rendering from install, it is highly unlikely that you will get it up after that. This topic has been handled extensively at linuxvoodoo.org After battling with my card for about a week, I discovered a simple way of getting it going, but it requires an udate/re-install. You just have to pay attention in the installation, you MUST run install on "Expert" and when you get to the section where install configures X, you will have the optiong of XFree86 with Hardware Rendering, make sure you select this option (you will be presented with 3). Now when you run glxinfo |less you should see Hardware Rendering: Yes This worked for me and a lot of other Voodoo users, I just did an update of my MDK9. Nobody seems to be able to get it running after install. If someone can, please post your method!

I administrated a network of Win2k computers for a while. It definately gave me the option of using a fat32 partition during install. Perhaps try getting hold of a newer release. I would not recommend resizing a ntfs partition, unless you do not mind losing all the data on it. The actual size change will be fine, but data will most likely not make it.

I've run War3 under winex before - you don't need to do anything about copy protection. Unless, of course, you are pirating it in which case you can bite me.

It probably is a bug. My Evolution gives all sorts of trouble. Whenever I did a sync with my Handspring, it would create double entries (even though the conduits were set to "synchronise") I also had problems with mail handling and folder management. Pity though, cus it is a great piece of software.

I have noted a marked improvment with the release of MDK 9.0. A look at the bug sheets will confirm big improvments from 8.2 Since the release of 9.0, I have done just under 20 installs of the OS on a few machines, without any errors in PCI-Utils and only one small problem with openoffice being very slow on opening files. Mandrake might look a little superficial with a basic click-and-go install but dig a bit deeper and you will find a very flexible distribution. It would be nice to be alerted of errors while away from the machine though - I think it should phone my mobile number and alert me. GET REAL! But if it's not "technical" enough for you, maybe another distro is your answer...

Oh, so Linux must be free AND user friendly? Unfortunately the very nature of an open source operating system means that it is going to take more insight to use. Only a fool would believe that M$ products are cheaper in the long run then Linux. M$ is on the run and trying last minute tactics to stunt the spread of Linux. The Halloween docs were proof of this. They really do not know what to do. The way I see it going is a strong core of proffesionals setting up and administering systems running Linux being used by everyday people who do not have the time or patience to learn Linux. Once a system is setup it can be very simple to use. I think this is the future of the personal computer, a device with preloaded software meeting specific requirements. I personally like the feeling of belonging to an exclusive group of people running Linux, unfortunately there is nothing exclusive about the group anymore and the challenge now is: How are we going to change our operating system to accomodate all these people that want to use it but do not know how. We have to, not growing means death.

Your swap space should equal roughly double the amount of RAM you have, i.e.: 128MB RAM = 256MB Swap This is only a guideline, pmpat. was right, you have more than enough already.

Perhpas a little explanation is necessary: I do not have a problem with Grip, what Grip boils down to is a GUI for cdparanoia and lame (or whatever rip and enocde programs you need). My problem with it is that I need to spend time on each cd getting it going, now for my application (radio work) I need to rip and encode large amounts of music every day. So I guess what I mean is that I need something more reliable and quicker (not in the actual rip & encode, but in getting it going).

I need some help. I'm looking for a good rip n' encode program for Linux. Grip doesn't cut it (I'm a bit of an audiophile, ya see). I used Music Match Jukebox for Linux, which is a complete joke. In Windoze, I used to use Exact Audio Copy with Lame, can't seem to find a program for Linux that meets those standards (the output files are intended for radio playback). Lemme know.

Hardware Accelereration Dude... You'd need a serious cluster running to play my games with software rendering :wink: I guess I need to educate myself more with XFree, adding resolutions to my config file doesn't work though, which is weird.

I had the same problem with linuxconf, I eventually gave up and configured my users through the mandrake control panel which worked just fine...

The beauty of Gnome to me is how customiseable it is. If you want it to like like MacOS then it can, if you want it to look like Windows, no problem. Play around with it a bit and get it looking however you please. I must agree with johnnyv though, if you can't get Gnome to look like KDE, why not use KDE? Put the salt in the salt shaker, ya know? I like Gnome because it isn't as user friendly (if you know what I mean) as KDE and Enlightenment, etc. I hate little help boxes popping up all over the place. Blackbox is also cool for it's simplicity.

This isn't exaclty a "nugget of wisdom" but there have been some serious samba updates since MDK 9 was initially released, I am busy downloading them now. Might be worth it to update before trouble shooting.

There are updates for all the samba services available from Mandrake Update. Try installing them before going on. There seem to be a few mounting issues in MDK 9, I've had big trouble with supermount especially and auto mounting too. I've resorted to doing all my mounting manually.

I set up my Samba Server through Webmin (it is on the MDK 9 CDs). I know this doesn't answer your question, but might be a work-around.

WineX, check out DOlson's site.

If you play with WineX (as opposed to straight wine) the Net play apparently comes right. Check out DOlson's Mandrake Experience site for a great tutorial on getting winex going from the CVS tree.

It is unfortunate, but I doubt this issue will ever be tackled in XFree as the requirement is not too common, perhaps bring it to someone who can make a differences' attention?

I tried that, didn't work (with those two games, others are fine). I reckon I'll just stop being fussy....

Now that I'm down with Linux gaming, I'm starting to get fussy: Two of my games (Quake 3 & UT) refuse to run full screen, UNLESS I set them to the same resolution as my desktop. My machine, on the other hand, can't handle this resolution for games. All my other opengl games (quake 1, tux racer, etc) run full screen no problem, even though their resolutions are lower then my desktop. But when I open Quake3, for instance, I get it running smaller and all out of place.... I know there are lame work arounds for this (like creating a user with a different res. for games) but like I said, I am being fussy now. So if anyone can help me, please do...

I am trying to install Ardour on MDK9 as it seems to be the best Sound Editing program for my needs. Does anyone know if I can cook it and from where, etc? I do not have the skills to get it going from the CVS tree and all the rpms available seem to be for older versions...

I like using Webmin to do all my Samba stuff. It is on your mandrake cds and makes adding Samba users, etc. a breeze.

Ok, sorry. :roll: I remember the first time I turned on my Handspring, it gave me that screen asking for an "owner" but the first time I synced it, it detected the "user" as that owner I inserted. Whenever I've done a hard reset though, it hasn't done that again. I am also starting to suspect that your palm is faulty, especially considering that it doesn't sync on other pcs. Why not take it to your local distributor? Most of them will send it in to be checked free of charge and if it needs to be repaired, it shouldn't cost too much. That way you can clear the possibility of it being faulty out of the way. When my first palm 3 packed up, I took it in and Palm repaired it free of charge.

The best way to find dependencies (or any other packages) for me is to use www.rpmfind.net and download pre-compiled rpms.... If it's available in rpm, rpmfind should have it.
