  1. I would like to setup an http proxy server, so that I can browse what I want, preferably over an SSL connection, but I can always run my proxy server behind an SSL connection. There has got to be such a thing available, any suggestions?
  2. the regular graphical install in LE2005 does give you a choice of which partitions you want to format. I'm even pretty sure the default suggestion is correct
  3. nice, but I'm growing fond of the crazy star struck penguin :P If only it was as easy to change the nake of the distro!
  4. How about you start by telling us what kind of error you're getting? It's not *that* dangerous to surf with 1.0.2, but you should be able to ugrade if you really want to . Personnaly I'm waiting for the 1.0.3 official upgrade from mdk, or at lesat a contrib/plf version.
  5. Why do you want to have KDE 3.4? any new feature you can't live without? As you point out, this is apretty major upgrade and it's likely something will go wrong/
  6. I can't figure out how to change the icon for the "access desktop" (minimize all windows) in kicker. The default icon that came up after install is the one seen in this screenshot (I couldn't find a standalone image of the icon): It looks terrible at "small" setting. It sort of looks like a guy in a baseball hat (I have had two people ask me what the baseball player icon was for). I would like to change it to the desktop icon that doesn't have the desk lamp (which is what people mistake for a head and hat), or even the older desktop icon: I know how to chnage the icon of a shortcut, but I don;t know how to change a kicker icon. 7. weird, the other "File Size View" somehow appeared in my menu. I added kdeaddon maybe it's included in it?
  8. Well I never had it working under MAndrake 10.0, I skipped 10.1 but I installed LE2005 this weekend and KDE desktop sharing works great, which is a good thing since it was my main incentive for upgrading.
  9. OK I gave up on DrakUPS Since I have an APC brand UPS, I installed apcupsd and restored apcupsd.conf from a previous backup. I'm now in business. note that I got a scare when I tried "Service apcupsd status" because I got "FATAL ERROR in apcaccess.c at line 243" but a quick google search exaplined that the daemon takes a while to start up and that I should have waited 30s before issuing the status query. now works perfectly.
  10. I have a UPS mad by APC and until now Mandrake didn't have "native" support for UPSes so in the past I manually installed apcupsd and manually configured it. It looks like LE2005 has UPS support but when I run the UPS wizard it detects the UPS (connected by USB) then gives me a warning about "Write support for users is incomplete. It lacks some support for some extra that would be lost else" (sic) not being fully implemented, then completes (aborts?) the wizard without asking me any more questions, like what to do when the battery is low. and that's the end of it. Is there a separate application to check battery levels and low batt behavior?
  11. yes, gkrellm will not show anything it it can't read the output of the sensors command (or it's empty), so make sure you sensors are set up properly (i.e. do you get results when you type sensors at the command line).
  12. got it thanks. didn't dig far enough in that menu. "Special Windows Behaviors" is what I need
  13. I just upgraded to LE2005. One of the things that I "lost" in the process is the fact that I had some applications to set open in a specific desktop, and I can't remember how I had achieved that in the first place. Any pointers? I'm pretty sure I used some kind of "remember this window's settings" but I can't find it anymore. Thanks
  14. how did it get there in the first place? did you install it with rmp or urpmi? use "urmpq Real" and "urpmq rea"l to see if you have any packages with those names (remember, package names are case sensitve and this is one of those rare instances that uses capitals in the packagae name, but some older packages were not capitalized) I you installed it with rpm (rather than urpmi) there is a similar query option, I think it's rpm -q (I've been using Mandrake for too long!) If you can't remove it that way, just tar the directory to archive it just in case you want to restore it, then remove it, and install as described in my post.
  15. Worked like a charm! Glad to see I'm not the only one that wanted do that :)
  16. FYI, something I had been misssing: if you add the kde-addons package, Konqueror will have an "extract" context menu (right click) so that you don't have to use Ark outside of Konqueror. Very useful!
  17. firefox in LE2005 uses the "red dinosaur" Mozilla icon, not the fox one or some generic one. I would like to change it to something else (either the blue globe used in the shortcuts or the fox one). I know how to change a shortcut icon, but is the application icon built into the application so I can't change it? I don't mind the left corner of the titlebar being the red dinosaur icon but I don't like it in the taskbar. I could learn to live with it but I'm just curious how to change it.
  18. I don't understanf, this is supposed to be a standard view choice in KDE 3.3 so LE2005 should include it but it's not there. Adding filelight did add a RadialMap View mode to Konqueror (filelight style size representation). Why am I missing the filesize view? Does anyone else with LE2005 have it? Also, in the view menu I have a KFileReplace entry, I chose it to see what it does and I got an error that "libkfilereplaceparts.la" was not found in the path
  19. nice, similar representation to SpaceMinger in windows, which I like, I'll see about installing it if I can.
  20. This is what I did and it worked for me: uninstall the old stuff: (as root) urpme realplayer urpme RealPlayer download the latest: go to http://www.real.com/ and download the RPM version make sure firefox is closed (may not make a difference, I don't know) in that directory: urpmi RealPlayer* I then went in the menus and under Multimedia->video I chose RealPlayer G2, this launched the RealPLayer 10.0.4 setup utility. that utility offered me to install the browser plugins and check for updates (the update goes to the helix page but since I just downloaded the package, it's up to date). Next I went to http://service.real.com/realplayer/test/ to test the player. when I click on one ofthe link, mozilla wanted to open it with Totem by default: I told it to open it with /usr/bin/realplayer.bin instead and remember that for future uses. I am an now able to play the realplayer 10 samples. Hope this helps, and pipe in if you think I did something wrong. Edit: maybe in the future I will install the "Helix" flavor of RealPLayer. I think it's identical to the RealPLayer one, it's just a name change (the rpm name is different).
  21. Thanks to those who tried to help. I suddenly remembered the name, it'd filelight, not "firelight", which makes more sense anyway. http://www.methylblue.com/filelight/ EDIT: it's also in contrib Here's a screenshot:
  22. weird, not on my Konqueror (from standerd LE2005 install) is it an add-on?
  23. I know about those but I'm trying to find something that helps me drill down directory to see who is the biggest user of space and for what files. Something similar to spacemonger under windows, or actually the representation for the utility I'm thinking of is closer to what overdisk does under windows:
  24. I used to have a utility that was showing graphically the space used on the hardrive, kidof like a piechart but better, I thought it was called "firelight" or something like this but I can't find it anymore. Anyone know what I'm, talking about?
  25. I installed LE2005 this weekend and when I went to setup software sources I noticed that plf is now split in free and non-free sofware. I assume that they use free as in speech, not as in beer, so that I should probably add both?
