  1. The OS will try to autodetect and set up everything for you as soon as you plug in the USB cable. But to say that this will work automatically is probably a little naive... in most cases things work, but off brand devices, or very new devices, often will not work. You may have to do a little research online, and install some drivers. In many cases, updating an application to the most recent version is the solution (SANE is a good example) Also, an easy thing to try first is to use RPM-Drake to search for packages related to your device that may not be installed. Thats how I got my TV Tuner card working... (Yea!) Hope this helps, and your not out on the boat already!
  2. Set up the networking so that they have the same subnet mask (255.255.255.0) and then give one an IP address of 1.1.1.1, and the other 1.1.1.2. You might need to set the gateway as well, but it shouldn't matter what you set it to, since this is your own network, with no internet. Also, you'll need a hub, or a crossover cat 5 cable. You can buy either of them at Best Buy (do they have Best Buy in Scotland?) or you can wire the crossover cable yourself. I'm no network expert, but I think that's all there is to it.
  3. The original question was definitely lost in the translation... If, in fact, this is the original question, then the answer is "Yes." :) But I doubt it. Is there any way we can get clarity on this so the poor guy or gal can get an answer?
  4. It's your problem, not ogg... In fact, I hesitated to even respond to your message it's so absurd. Ogg files are consistantly better quality than mp3s of the same bitrate. I recommend you do a little investigation as to why your ogg file sounded bad, rather than just coming on here and spouting off.
  5. Yes and Yes. FYI-If I run mplayer at the command line with the URL as the argument, it loads the movie and plays fine. (WMV, AVI, MPG... still no Quicktime Sorensen format)
  6. Well... when I installed I didn't do the best job of creating partitions... /home is on /... Any suggestions on how to get /home on its own partition? I expect it involves creating the partition and then mounting it in fstab? BTW - I have partition magic 8 on my windows partition. I bought it so I could easily partition my drive when I originally installed Linux. Now that I am more familiar with the need for separate filesystem partitions, I am very interested in this subject. If I am going to make one for /home, I wonder, should I make one for /usr or /opt while I'm at it.
  7. So if I download the 9.1 distro when it's out of beta, what is the method for installing/upgrading? Does it have an upgrade process to make going from 9 to 9.1 easy? And, is it worth it? Just wondering. I am always interested in the latest/greatest... But I've never upgrade a linux system. Thanks
  8. I have been messing around with Icewm again. I used it a long time ago, and I wanted to try using it again. I am having problems getting IcePref and IceMe to work... I remember liking both applications a lot, and really would like to use them for configuration. Both installed fine from RPMs.. here is the output when I run them: It appears that I am missing a package or something related either to python or Gtk...however I did some investigating and, hoping they would contain the missing modules, I installed the following packages: pygtk-0.6.9-3.i386.rpm python-gtk-0.6.9-3cl.i386.rpm gtk+-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm gtk+-devel-1.2.8-1.i386.rpm gtk+extra-0.99.17.tar.gz But these didn't seem to help... Anyone know what's going on here?

    KDE Hosed

Actually, yeah, you beat me to it. I wanted to update my post to say that I can start kde as root. I did delete .kde and .kderc from my home directory... which didn't fix the problem. I didn't do the .DCOP ones... I didn't know about them. I do wish I would have moved them or renamed them, rather than deleting them. :( I will definitely do that with this round of files/directories. I'll try it and let you know!

    KDE Hosed

Not sure what is going on... I downloaded the crossover plugin demo, installed it... it locked up to the point where I needed to reboot, and now that I rebooted, KDE won't start. It goes to x, and the little watch mouse icon comes on the screen, but the KDE boot splash never comes up. I let it load over lunch, and came back to the same screen. I usually start at runlevel 5... I changed to 3 so I could try to see what was going on.. but no use. Are there any logs or anything I can see? I cant believe this is related to the crossover plugin, but maybe it's related to some new service that is starting, and hanging? Wine related maybe? Regardless of the problem or the fix, this is absurd. No desktop OS should be this fickle... I could see if I was messing with system files or something... but I was installing a freaking browser plugin, and my machine is hosed? So, can anyone help?
  11. Actually, yes it does... in fact it also works in Opera on Windows.

    rpmdrake

A Roman emperor used to end all of his speeches with it. It literally means "Death To Carthage" but metaphorically it is more of a general battle cry. It's fun to say it when you sit down to a large plate of hot wings. :)

    rpmdrake

I started using urpmi based on all the raves about it on this board, and for a while, it was great! I had a nice list of online media, and I would do this: 1. Download the rpm I wanted to install. 2. Type urpmi rpmname.rpm and it would install the dependencies, and then the rpm...usually. For the week or so that urpmi was working, it was really freaking sweet. Lately urpmi has been acting just like rpm... it gives me the list of dependencies, and does not offer to go get them. Any ideas?
  14. I have the windows version of mozilla on my laptop.. It doesn't work in windows either. You know what tho.. wmv's do the same thing in Opera. I did the same thing using opera's preferences... and it still behaves the same way. This is really strange. Anyone know how to fix this?
  15. When I click on a link to a Windows Media Video file (*.wmv) in Mozilla, it tries to open the file like a webpage and puts garbage in the browser window. How do I change this? In Preferences/Helper Applications, I added a new association to mplayer, but I dont know if it's correct. Here is how I set it up: Description: Windows Media Video File Extension: wmv Mime Type: video/x-ms-wmv Application to use: mplayer There is also a Reset button at the bottom of that dialog that says it will clear my file opening preferences and ask me before opening files. I clicked that too. Needless to say, it didn't work. These wmv files open fine if I save them and then run mplayer manually, but why can't I get this to work properly in mozilla?
  16. Finally. I found drivers for the logitech quickcam express, which I remembered seeing at best buy.. So I loaded the drivers, returned the old cam, and picked up the quickcam, and viola! Just as someone on these boards had told me, a Gnomemeeting icon with my new video device showed up on my desktop! Thanks for everyones help
  17. johnnyv wrote: I've tried that so many times but I haven't been able to get that to work... what are you doing that I'm not? I am simply typing Is there an argument in the command I should be using? If I can get it to work I will be completely happy with copying it from the page source.
  18. I was on the Codeweaver's site... I added the Crossover Plugin to my cart.... I was just about to checkout- and pay $24.95... when it occurred to me: I don't know anyone who uses this thing... I wonder if how well it works, if at all! I want this for watching embedded streaming quicktime movie trailers (Apple.com, Hollywood.com, JoBlo.com) Sorensen format or something. Who is this Sorensen guy and why is his format so difficult to support?! :D I have the most recent mplayer (which totally rocks and plays every other freaking format I'd ever want), and am using the wftv mozilla plugin...which tries hard, but generally fails. So, is anyone using this Crossover plugin, with Mozilla, under Mandrake 9.0 in KDE 3.0, specifically? All I have to do is click submit and I can download it, and I'll be 25 bucks lighter... I just want to hear some rave reviews first. Also, this isn't some Wine thing is it? I am not interested in that. I want a straight forward plugin. I want to put it in my mozilla/plugins directory and watch the Kill Bill trailer, which, as I've mentioned before, kicks so much ass. Thanks again Rob
  19. Thanks for the advice, (and the quick response!) But I have done that. In fact most of the information I have found on Google is outdated (circa 2000...) and many of the links are broken. The Mandrake Hardware Compatability chart lists a Creative Webcam Go as 'tested'. The cam I have now is a Creative webcam (sans Go) and apparently different enough that it doesn't work. So, I'm hoping to find someone who uses Mandrake 9.0, and has a working webcam, and can tell me the make and model so I can buy one. Thanks again.
  20. Well, it seems that webcam troubleshooting is either too hard, too boring, (or I'm too stupid) for anyone to help. Also, I posted quite a bit of technical gobbledygook in my last post on this subject (see: this), and if I would have seen that I probably would have said "Hmmm... isn't there a poll or something I can answer?" and hoped someone else could help. So, I have concluded that I once again have purchased an unsupported webcam, and want to go buy another one that will hopefully work (3rd time's a charm!) I have based this conclusion on the following dmesg info: That is what happens when I plug the webcam into the usb port. This time, I am simply asking for advice. I just want to make sure that the next one I buy will work. What webcams are you people using? I don't want to spend much (30-50 USD). Also, if there was a trick to getting your cam working, I'd appreciate that info as well, in case I buy your model... Thanks in advance! Rob

    Limewire

I use Phex (another Gnutella client) I like it better than Limewire. It's 100% pure Java, which immediately makes it near and dear to my heart, and there's a nice Aqua skin for it that makes it look SWEET. Probably no different than limewire in most ways, but I just like Phex better. Also, the guy that's been going is absolutely right. I've gotten more songs from the IRC channels than anything else...even Napster when it was around. Back in my windows days, when I used mIRC, and the SPR mIRC script, it was a lot easier, but it's still totally do-able in xchat. Problem is, I don't like any of the crap that is being released these days.
  22. The answer is no. I have searched high and low. I use WSAD (Websphere studio application developer) at work, and its ok, but I'm not a huge fan of Eclipse, so I don't really like it. But BoyEnjinir is right, it does have a visual html/jsp editing component. But, also, everyone else that responded is right too... and you probably already know this... as unattractive as it sounds, writing the code in a text editor is the best way to do it, and there are some great options for doing it. My favorite is Netbeans (www.netbeans.org). It's free, has a built in tomcat test environment, and is just so friggin awesome I can write about it without tearing up... Bottom line, you can test your code changes immediately in the tomcat environment, so its the next best thing to wysiwyg. Good luck. And if you find anything, let me know.
  23. Ok... I got a creative labs webcam! hooray! Still can't tell if it's working. I plug it in, check USBView, and it's listed, 'Creative Webcam' but its red. Why the heck is it red?! So I started Gnomemeeting, and went to set the video device, and the only video device I can select is /dev/video0, which is my tv tuner card. Even so, how do I tell what device this webcam is now that it's plugged in? I ran gqcam, and selected 'Open new camera' but every device I try locks the app up. I have tried /dev/v4l/video0, /dev/v4l/vbi0 (whatever that is), /dev/usb/hid/hiddev0 (just for kicks, since its a usb cam), and /dev/video, but none of them work... Here is the information from USBview And here is the information from Hard-drake: That line "Module: unknown" stood out to me, but then I noticed that my modem and my cordless mouse reciever are also listed as "Module: unknown" and both work fine. I guess it still maybe the problem, but I'm hoping someone here can help me. BTW - I have rebooted as well, just in case.. and it didn't help.
  24. Ok... I'm not screwing around. I just wrapped it back up and it's going back to target today. The only webcam I see on Mandrake's Hardware Compatability Database is a Creative Labs Webcam Go... I don't think I'm gonna find one at the store. I also don't believe that's my only option. So what webcams out there work? What webcams are everyone else using with Mandrake 9? Also: As I mentioned previously, I have a TV Tuner card on /dev/video0. When I plug a supported webcam in, I expect to have a device on /dev/v4l/video0. If anyone here has used Gnomemeeting, then you will know that you select your video devices from a dropdown list, you dont key in the device path. So will Gnomemeeting know that I have a second video device? Is there a list of "Video Devices" that is maintained by the system? I suspect so, since it knew that there was one at /dev/video0, but I was just wondering. I guess I'll find out when I plug one in!
  25. What's the trick? I bought GE USB webcam at Target. I plugged it in and it doesn't work... I had heard that most any webcam will work, but when I look in USBVIEW it seems to show as an "Unknown Device". I searched in RPMDRAKE for anything with the word 'cam' in the name and installed it, and rebooted, and still nothing. One of the apps I ran, gqcam runs but does not find the cam. I really hope it's not the webcam, but at the same time, I don't even know how to know if it's working. BTW- I am running Mandrake 9, KDE 3, and really want this cam to work with GnomeMeeting, which works fine. I have a TV Tuner card on /dev/video0. I have used Gnomemeeting with my DV Camcorder thru the video-in on the TV tuner card, and it works, but the camcorder turns off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity, so it doesn't make a good webcam.
