  1. I use to have the same apache problem. Webmin isn't a reliable application to edit apache unless you do some monitoring. The problem is that when you use webmin it doesn't edit the right config file for apache. Heres a list of what you should do, that I think will fix the problem. 1. Update webmin 2. Lower security level to normal 3. Log out and log on as root 4. Go to /etc/httpd/conf/ 5. Take the file httpd.conf file and put it somewhere else thats safe. (in case you need it again) 6. Make sure a file called httpd2.conf is there, if not forget what I said at all. 7. Log out of root and back on to your user 8. Raise your security levels again. 9. Try it out and see if it works. The reason I think this will fix your problem, is that webmin changes the wrong config file and when you remove the fake one its writing too, it automatically detects the right one which should be httpd2.conf, not httpd.conf. Also make sure to restart Apache after changes. Please let me know if this fixes your apache problem, I'm sorry I didn't know that answers to your other problems, but I'm sure someone else will. B)
  2. I'm do not using kmldonkey.... I'm using melnet , which lets me do it in my browser. I tried starting mldonkey by pressing alt+f2 and typing in mldonkey, but it said the specified file location was invalid. Is that 01 version, instead of the new 04 version of java, any better that you suggseted? And if it is how do I uninstall java. Thanks, SwiftDeath
  3. :P LOLZ :P <---- the first time I read it, I beleived some of it, but I caught on by the third paragraph. lol
  4. I got Mldonkey to work.... Seems pretty nice, I installed and and opened it up in the web browser. The only problem is when ever I search for something I never get in results, it will report something like this. EDIT: It doesn't find anything because it doesn't connect to any servers, and I don't know how to fix that. I know LimeWire is a really good one, but I'm one of the few that has one of those weird java problems when installing it. I also have java not work on a few sites when I try them out, but when I go to the test java pages it says mine is working. So maybe my java is just messed up my java, but it does work on most sites. Besides happypuppy.com and a few others. Thanks for the help, SwiftDeath
  5. Ok I looked in the fax on how to install eDonkey and I'm applying it to OverNet, since thats their new fast version and I run the program..... and it won't start, I can't even make a username and password so I can use the GUI. So normally I would type Pass X (my username) Y (My password) to so I could go on with the set-up but I get that Aborted Core Dumped, error. Thanks in Advance, SwiftDeath
  6. Hmmm... Those are really hard to install. I tried overnet and GNU-Gnutella Overnet installation makes so sense. I have no clue how to install On GNU-Gnutella I run the configure file, but it never generates the right one. Newb <----- that needs help Thanks, SwiftDeath
  7. Hey all, I'm looking for a good program to download music and stuff like Kazaa. I tried to install: limewire, kazaa, gift, and edonkey but they all appeared to complicated. Is their a RPM package for mandrake from RPMDRAKE or URPMI I don't know about. And if not, which P2P would you recommend thats easy to install, and which GUI (if it needs one) to install if your using GNOME. Thanks, SwiftDeath
  8. I am 100 percent sure I know your problem because I've had the same. I use webmin to update my apache server, too. I also couldn't create virtual servers, but I fixed it by doing some tweaking. Good luck, this took me a while to figure out myself. I'm happy I could help someone with a similiar problem.
  9. Hmm.... I guess I will go to easy URMPI and learn more about updating. I am still unsure whether I should do it the URPMI or GUi way? I know the URMPI way you can accidently overwrite or mess something up, but is that possible the GUI way? I just don't want to mess up the computer like a did before. I don't really need to learn the update thingy since I'm getting Official, but it'd be a good thing to know anways I am pretty sure I am using the standard which I beleive is EXT3. I guess I will turn it off the manual way. I am using the 2.4 kernel because I heard the 2.6 isn't as compatible? Should I try to switch kernels? I will continue to use linux, and I guess at the end of the summer, I'll make my descision which one I prefer for a desktop, I already prefer linux for a server  About the software, I realize their are a lot of alternitives. But theirs specefic software that I beleive doesn't have an equal. For example, I have a broker and they only let you buy and sell stock with their program, called TradeStation 8.0, and its only Windows Compatible. I'm also a web designer and I use frontpage, and some Macromedia utilities, and I do beleive linux has alternitives, but they don't appear to match in quality. The third software only for windows I'd need to use is called LOLA, its a software that lets you take music off of your computer and watch it on the TV, using their program and remote. Its only for windows :o Hopefully, in a couple weeks, after I learn the true basics such as getting a stable system :P , I will attempt to learn WINE and WINEX. I appreciate everyone's help, and I can't wait till my Mandrake PowerPack 10.0 Official comes in! (It was only 6 bucks on ebay, what a deal :D)
  10. I bought a powerpack. I think I'll just wait for that to ship in... the whole update thing confuses me.
  11. Hmm... I'm doing it pretty much the same... when I get to the networking and stuff I'll try the advanced options. I found a usb converter thingy in my dad's office and I borrowed it. I am thinking maybe my motherboard isn't compatible, so I'm gonna install it this time with the 2.4 kernel instead of the 2.6. Thanks, for the help, alot man.
  12. Well right now I can't choose anything because the OS crashed so bad, I am just gonna reinstall it. I'll probably buy a PS/2 mouse soon, now. What do you recommend about the weird restarting problems? And any clue why the internet stops working sometimes? Sometimes my sound doesn't work, but i'll get to that once I get the OS on first. But do you have any clues as to why the system gets so buggy after such a short period of time (2-3 weeks). How do you restart the comp if the mouse doesn't work (using gnome)? Maybe that will stop all these force reboots and make it less buggy and more stable.
  13. Nope, I only got a usb. But a PS/2 would be a solution to the freezing? How do I fix the internet and the turning off/restarting problems?
  14. Ok when I log out... it does it the non-graphical way so I say everyone. The last four lines I see are Then it just sits their forever. Also, the mouse freezes up alot, and when I try to reinstall it freezes after the license agreement. Maybe this is a hardware problem?
  15. Ok... yeah it does do its fixes, but they don't seem to help much. yeah when I shut off... I get all the way of the gui, so I don't think thats the problem. I also got this same internet problem at another computer at a different house. The interenet just stopped working after an improper shutdown. I know its not the cable cause when we plug a laptop in, the internet works there.
  16. It seems the whole OS is ex3.... I am just gonna reinstall I think. Not much to lose  But then again, I need to know what happened so I can rely on this OS in the future. Any idea was its so buggy? Does it matter the fact that I'm running on a high security level? Could I have got a virus? EDIT: I'm not gonna reinstall the OS, untill I figure out whats wrong, so i make sure this doesn't happen again. Thanks for the help. I appreciaite it.
  17. My internet is always screwed up just by restarting improperly. I am glad that their are solutions. When I unstall the connection and reinstall it normally doesn't work. Maybe its my router (DI-614+) or i'm not selecting the right thing (LAN or Cable, aren't they the same thing). I am not sharing a partition or anything with windows. its a 100 percent linux. I think my file system is hda? I am not sure I am using the default from the installation. I am afraid to try the updates because last time I tried it screwed up apache and some other things. The GUI one doesn't really show any updates eitheir. Plus the internet got screwed up. I also bought Mandrake 10.0 official and I'm going to try that soon. Its the 5 cd one (Power Pack or something? Have no clue what that does) The reason I'd have to do a force shutdown is that linux doesn't turn my computer off. It gets to KILL Signals or something and a couple lines later it just stops, and hangs their forever.
  18. I was attracted to linux and saw that mandrake was for the beginners. Now before you label me off as a idiot, I've been using this OS for 2 weeks. This was all done with Mandrake 10.0 Community Edition. If The OE release fixes all this than I apologize for voicing these problems. 1. It seems that whenever a computer is improperly shut-down it completely ruins the functionality and operation of the system. Now I know its not a good thing to improperly turn off your computer, its a bad thing, but its completely absurd to expect for it to never happen at all. Heres a list of the programs and applications damaged by the improper shut-down in my experience. Apache Internet Networking Sound Ability to restart *ability to restart means I can't restart the computer or turn it off the normal way, and in consequence I have to turn it off manually (improperly) thus doing even more damage to the operating system. I've seen some pretty bad bs with microsoft, but I've never seen a computer not be able to restart. ********** *NOTE: Number 1 is really important, concerns after this aren't that major* ********** 2. It seems that updating with mandrake isn't that great of a system yet. You can't do automatic updates with the GUI. You can only do it with URPMI, and I tried it with URMPI, and it actually overwritten some programs and files messing them up, like my apache server. 3. Plug and Play and driver support isn't nearly equal to microsofts. It takes forever to keep your sound card or lan card to work if it isn't automatically set up with the install. Drivers are hard to find and which ones to use. 4. Lack of software. This is self-explanatory, a lot of stuff you can't do in linux that you can with windows unless you master wine and winex, which can be confusing for new users. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now I please do not wish to be flamed, I am just voicing my concern for the survival of linux verses the giants. I do have a couple things I do like about Mandrake though. 1. Its free 2. Comes with most basic needed applications 3. Very easy to set up a tv on your comp Lets please keep this a good conversation, and yes I am a newb to linux, but that may make my opinion more valuable because I represent most window users trying to transfer over to linux. I also would appreciate if someone would tell me how to make all this more stable, or at least a distribution that can handle what this one cannot.
  19. I dunno, if were trying to prevail over windows we need to show were the sharper edge. I don't know much abt linux, because I am very new. But I imagine once linux becomes easier to use with less bugs, more general support for software (such as shockwave) and stuff) and hardware, and lot harder to crash, then I beleive it will prevail over windows. I use linux because of the price, and I kinda like to be the rebel sometimes. But I doubt the general user will use linux because of those reasons.
  20. This post inspired me, lol. I thought all linux distro's were this rough? but you mean theirs one with a lot less errors? Thats good knews, cause mandrake does seem a bit too rough for me, with all the errors. Would distro would you recommend me thats relatively problem free with a descent GUI interface that can is fast when running Apache, MySql, and maybe a game server?
  21. I have the same problem with no sound too.... Perhaps you can fix mine too? :D When I enter that command get this response.
  22. Hmmm.... If I just downloaded the 4th iso. cd when it was available for download... Would that work with me 3 CE cds and make a full official distribution?
  23. Just beware if you have NAT or a router. You may get the same problem as me, see this. View Site
  24. Ok, checked it out... Looks pretty nice. I dled the client and it gave me 2 shells. A debian shell or a redhat shell. Which one should I install? And also, how do you run a shell?
  25. Are their Free Dynamic DNS Linux Services? I used to run IIS and I used Dynamic DNS services but I am having problems finding a good client for linux. Which one would you experts recommend for clients and services, preferrably one with a small domain name and port 80 get arounds. Thanks, SwiftDeath
