  1. Ya, it depends a great deal on the type of dye used and the reflective coating and track spacing (not song length but capacity wise (650MB vs. 700MB) on the CDR. I picked up a whole wack of Kodak gold CDRs (phthalocyanine dye, gold reflective layer, 650MB capacity) just before they were discontinued. Those work well in older CD players. I believe they still sell a similar type of CD just for audio applications (at a higher price then they sold the data CDRs for). Glitz.
  2. I'm sorry that I can't provide a lot of help here, but there is a way to turn on anti-aliasing in Gnome. Luckily, this is in one setting, unlike changing the fonts themselves. Under LM9.0 you had to do some searching to find them all (it's not in an obvious spot and spread out among different parts of the configuration program). There's one spot that only changed the title font. There's another that changed the menu font. There's one hidden in the theme selector (I think) that actually changes the font for most other types of text. And I have no clue how to change the font type used on the Gnome desktop (Although I actually managed to change it once before). Also, the regular Helvetica may not be the best font to use under anti-aliasing. There are basically two types of fonts, bit mapped, and scalable. Usually when selecting fonts you can prevue the fonts. When doing this enlarge the font you want to use up to about size 24 and see if the edges are smooth. If they are then they are scalable. If they are pixelated slightly then they are bit mapped. Don't use the bitmapped ones, they look terrible with antialiasing turned on. Under KDE I use ArmNet Helvetica. This is a scalable font that looks real nice. The regular Helvetica looks terrible. Good luck. Glitz.
  3. All you have to do is click on flat list in software manager. It's always been there. Glitz.
  4. Ya, Futureshop is really good when it comes to warrantee returns. I returned two HP CDRs under the same warrantee period. First my 4040i which was replaced with a 6040i and the remainder of the warrantee. It failled too and they replaced it with a 7800 CDRW and a completely new warrantee period. Unfortunately it failed just after the expiration of the new warrantee period and I decided to go with Plextor. Glitz.
  5. When modifying your XF86Config-4 make sure to get rid of any 32 bit screen sections. These will cause the Nvidia drivers to fail to load. Glitz.
  6. This has been the case since at least LM8.0. Remember, there has always been over 3000 packages on those CDs. Glitz.

    nvidia

How about posting your XF86Config-4 file. Glitz.
  8. Video in is not handled by the Nvidia chipset. A third party video capture chip is used (usually Philips for Nvidia cards). Therefore a driver is required for these third party chips. Check out: http://rivatv.sourceforge.net/ RivaTV is a project to write drivers for these chips. I believe most TI4600 cards use the same chipset as the Geforce 3 cards (Philips SAA7108E) and support for them exists in RivaTV. Glitz.
  9. Under LM8.1 grip comes preconfigured for ripping to OGG. Just install and away you go. It must still be the same for 9.0 and 9.1. Glitz.

    XFree86 chaos

I find it disturbing that the development of such a crucial element of linux (and other OSes) is being held hostage by the XFree organization. I always wondered why ATI pulled out of supporting them directly but now I think I know. If the XFree organization is not willing to accept new programmers and show some focus then they shouldn't be surprised when the project splinters. Glitz.
  11. That does seem to indicate that the drivers could be suspect. Glitz.
  12. How do you know it's not the browser that is crashing? I have visited certain websites that crash Galeon but not Konqueror. I have also visited websites that crash older versions of Internet Explorer. Glitz.
  13. There's something charming about these sorts of games. Glitz.

    Game controller support

No, you will have to add that to modules.conf. Glitz. PS. I haven't actually tried to get it to load at bootup but that would be my guess on how to do it.
  15. I think you need to install one more driver to specifically access the joystick port on your soundcard. I'm sorry, but I don't know what it is called. Try doing a search. I'm pretty sure it was mentioned on this board only 3 or 4 weeks ago. Good luck! Glitz. PS. It looks like you have everything else you need.
  16. I use LM8.1 and although I've managed to crash it many times it's still a lot more stable than anything I've ever used. I have never had my server crash using LM8.1 (just over a year now) and the only 2 times I had to shut it off was to reclaim the hard drive space that reiserfs slowly steals from the system (I only have 180MB free on the server and after 6 months the log files must be cleaned off and a reiserfsck must be run to reclaim the disk space). The really scary thing is that there are distros out there that are much more stable than Mandrake. Glitz.
  17. Just a quick aside here. Would those drivers also work on the mobile radeon 9000? Glitz.
  18. There is very little in the way of packet writing software for linux right now. You can find some experimental tools which may or may not work. It looks like it will be included in the 2.6 kernel though. Glitz.
  19. I downloaded the english version of KNOPPIX today. I burned the CD, booted up the CDROM, and in 2 minutes and 5 seconds flat it had booted, detected both my processors, configured most of my hardware, started X, and dumped me into a fully loaded KDE 3.0 desktop. Very slick and it uses no harddrive space. The documentation says the distro is primarily meant to be used as a rescue disk but man, it comes fully loaded. For those users needing root access from the command line just open a regular console and then do: sudo bash I managed to get the ethernet stuff running and am writting this from konqueror on KNOPPIX. For a bootable CD operating system that uses no harddrive space, this is amazing! To get onto an ethernet network quickly to access the internet through a gateway do the following from a console: sudo bash ifconfig eth0 <machine address> route add <lan base address> dev eth0 route add default gw <gateway address> cd /etc vim resolv.conf Now edit resolv.conf to add the address of your network's DNS server: nameserver <DNS server address> Now you should be good to go. Glitz.
  20. I downloaded and tried the KNOPPIX distro today. Boy, I almost fell out of my chair! I burned the CD, stuck it in the drive and booted it up. In 2 minutes and 5 seconds (dual 433MHz Celerons with 384MB memory) it had booted from CD, detected my dual processors and most of my hardware, started X and dumped me into a fully loaded KDE 3.0 desktop with icons to mount all of my harddrive partitions (great for repairing filesystems). They managed to pack a ton of stuff on the CD (almost 2 GB worth aparently) and it shows. There was OpenOffice, WINE (haven't tried it yet though), the usual games including such hits as Frozen Bubble, multimedia, development packages, office, internet, utilities. Just about everything I have on my Mandrake setup. In fact, I am currently using Konqueror under KNOPPIX to write this (mind you, you have to set up the network configuration by hand since it is different for every machine). And the best part is that it doesn't require any harddrive space. If you want to just show someone what a typical Linux installation would allow you to do I highly recommend sticking a copy of this distro in their CDROM drive and giving them a guided tour. No harddrive space required. Glitz. PS. The main reason I downloaded this distro was to help my brother retrieve some data from his trashed windows XP partition. Aparently if there are errors on an XP partition then windows will try to "protect" your data from any further corruption by not allowing you to access your files. What brilliant moron came up with that idea? In any case, it worked like a charm. In fact, after I showed him how to mount one of his fat32 partitions in RW mode and start konqueror, he pretty well found and moved all his files all by himself. And he had been using Linux for all of 3 minutes.

    Game controller support

For an analog joystick su to root and then do: insmod gameport insmod ns558 insmod input insmod joydev insmod analog Then start rocks and diamonds, select the joystick and try to calibrate it. If you can calibrate it then your joystick is all set up. Glitz.
  22. When he gets that message he must be at a login prompt. Or am I wrong? Glitz.
  23. Where was everything originally located (which partitions/drives) and where is it located now? Glitz.
  24. It's a real pitty that Dell dropped the 64MB Geforce 4 440 Go video option from their 8200 laptop. :( Glitz.
