  1. Have you tried running UltraAccounts on a linux based Amiga emulator? Glitz.
  2. Exact;y when does it crash and what did you do to make it crash? Glitz.
  3. It doesn't matter how many 2s, 3s, and 4s are out there if the 1s have a choice between continuing to use what they already know (and be able to administer the system on their own) or having to learn something new (and relying on someone else) then I think most of them will stay put. There are lots of distributions out there that cater to the tech savvy user. A few that cater to the majority of people would be a good thing. Glitz.
  4. I personally like to add and additional sync right after terminate and after kill. Sometimes crashed programs (like Nvidia drivers and X) come back to life and start accessing the hard drive. The extra syncs can often prevent an e2fsck. Glitz.
  5. It's the "financial hit" part that is the most devestating. It would be enough to stop development of most open source projects if they were specifically targetted. And believe me, these guys own a lot of patents covering obscure little things we don't even give a second thought about but use every day. A patent doesn't just cover complex or particularly innovative things. It could be as simple as a spring that you place on your wiper blades to increase the force with which they push down on the windshield. Or it could be something as simple as allowing you to provide a transformation matrix to a graphics driver to allow you to do 3D rotations (I made that one up but it technically could have been patented). But I do know that Microsoft has recently acquired the rights to quite a few patents from SGI regarding methods used in OpenGL. Glitz.
  6. I think that most desktop users don't want change. They've struggled (possibly against their will) to learn how to use a computer and now that they're there, they don't want to go through that struggle again. That's a big problem. On the other hand, people that use things from day to day tend to tinker with them whether they are conscious of it or not. That could be a good thing. Therefore, I think getting them to switch is easier if they don't have to jump through any hoops at the beginning (ie. it should work approximiately the same as windows). Once they are comfortable with that then they will start tinkering with it and learn linux bit by bit at their own rate. Eventually, they will know enough linux so that it will be the operating system they know and don't want to move away from (see, that works both ways too). By the way, I don't know of too many people who have IT departments in their homes so I think if you want these people to switch, then administering the system has to be a no-brainer. IT departments in companies generally dictate policy so it really doesn't matter what the user wants, only what the IT guys are familiar with. Glitz.
  7. Ya, the lawsuits could be a problem. That's why adoption of open standards is so important. Glitz.
  8. What kind of filesystem did you use? Maybe there is a problem with DF and that filesystem type? Glitz.
  9. Check it out: http://www.opensource.org/halloween/halloween7.php It seems we're winning :D Glitz.
  10. I couldn't get my LM8.1 version of xmame to run fullscreen under lm9.0 either. It said something about not having access to DGA or something. Basically, either DGA isn't enabled, isn't installed, or there is some type of permission problem. I tried it as root. Try running it from a console window and see if it spits out any error messages. Glitz.
  11. I believe I saw something about a driver for the Riva128 that was maintained by someone (Since Nvidia doesn't support them). I have a computer here with a built in Riva128 and no AGP slot. One of these days I'm going to try and install Linux on it. Glitz.
  12. Please post the output of DF for us. Thanks. Glitz.

    Flight Simulator

It's probably still included with the Mandrake CDs as well but I haven't checked this. The version with LM8.1 flies well enough but a lot of stuff is still work in progress. Glitz.

    Hames for mandrake

It depends whether or not there are system dependencies in the game. Most Redhat RPMs work fine. If not you can usually download the source RPM and rebuild it for your distribution (eg. FILENAME.src.rpm) or you can download the source code and compile it yourself (eg. FILENAME.tar.gz). I had a URL to lots of open source games in various stages of development...hang on....ah, here it is: http://www.icculus.org/lgfaq/gamelist.php http://www.happypenguin.org/ For commercial games see: http://www.linuxgames.com/ Glitz.
  15. Did you just point to the OGLE RPm or did you make the directory a source? You have to make it one of your sources if you want to see all RPMs in the directory. Glitz.
  16. I don't have a notebook but have been checking into Dell. They gave linux as an option a few years back but no more. Their hardware is still very linux compatible from what I hear. A company called Emperor Linux resells Dell laptops with linux installed. Here are some URLs: http://www.dell.ca http://www.emperorlinux.com Glitz.
  17. Mystified, I think your problem is different from urbanotter's problem. I notice that I have the same symptoms you do [Mystified]. It will go through the shutdown process and then hang. It seems that it is trying to unmount the NFS stuff twice and on the second try it complains that RPC is not registered (whatever that is) and then stops at that point. Using the Sysrq key sequence it informs me that there are no more tasks at this runlevel so I can unmount the filesystem and reboot. Urbanotter, I think your problem probably has to do with APM somehow since you get all the way to the end where it tells you to shut down the machine. I'm not terribly familiar with this but you might try a search for it. Glitz.
  18. Ya, that looks correct. However, I think it may be pointing to the wrong drive. I want you to stick a CD in your DVD drive and then try to mount the CDRW. Specifically, I'm looking for whether or not the DVD gets accessed. What device is your CDRW in IDE terms (eg. hda, hdb, hdc, etc.) ? Glitz.
  19. PCMCIA...I don't know anything about that. Try searching for problems regarding PCMCIA. That might give you a few clues. Glitz.
  20. This sounds like the perfect thing for your linux library computer project. Glitz.
  21. Epic should have a good idea now of how many users use windows and how many use linux. Glitz.
  22. Please go to the /dev directory and tell us where /dev/scd0 points to. Glitz.
  23. Well, that rules out a filesystem type problem. You mentioned that there is no /dev/scd0 and that your cdrw is /dev/hde. IDE CDRWs usually use a scsi emulation driver so that cdwriter software will work with them (the software only works on SCSI devices). The /dev/scd0 is usually a softlink to the actual driver which in my system is /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/cd. Note that /dev/scsi/host0 is my actual scsi adapter. I noticed you have one too so our system configurations should be a close match in that respect. Also, before you do anything, disable supermount (supermount -i disable) and reboot your machine (for the setting to take effect). Supermount has problems of its own that will only lead you off on a wild goose chase if it is enabled. Glitz.
