Thanks for the reply Technonoid. I did run sndconfig and the aRTs server works fine. However, ALSA doesn't. I am specifically trying to get Rosegarden working with ALSA. The sequencer always dies at startup and ALSA complains there are no sound devices (/dev/dsp etc.) and that it will output to the null device. The ALSA daemon says that it started okay on bootup but when I check the services it says that it is stopped. If I try to start it, it says it started okay but the status is still stopped. I have installed all the updates so far. Glitz. PS. Rosegarden compiled no problem.

I always have the same problems with sound on Linux. Since the SB AWE32 isn't plug and play it is never detected at install time and therefore the ALSA drivers are never configured (or even installed in some cases). Then later there is no information on how to install and configure the stuff properly. So, can anyone help me get ALSA working under LM9.1? I know the old ALSA (version 0.5.x) had a snddevices script that you could run to set up all the /dev entries. However, I haven't been able to find a similar script for the 0.9.x version. All the howtos I've found on the web refer to the 0.5.x and earlier versions. Glitz.

Just as an aside, I found that after press ALT-SYSREQ-i that the Nvidia drivers tend to spring to life again and start accessing the disk. That's why I like to issue an extra ALT-SYSREQ-s after both the ALT-SYSREQ-i and ALT-SYSREQ-e sequences. This generally prevents an unclean umount of the filesystem. Glitz.

The aRTs server hijacks /dev/dsp anytime it has to output any sound (usually sound from the KDE desktop). It has settings which tell it how long it should hold /dev/dsp before giving up control again. The default is 60 seconds. I found that changing this to something like 10 seconds is better. That way, if you start an app and you don't get sound, you can just quit the app, count to 10 and then start it again. In general I don't have to do this very often. You can change this time parameter by opening KDE control center and going to sound -> sound server and check "autosuspend if idle for" and select the time. Glitz.

Now issue: mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.21-0.13mdk.img 2.4.21-0.13mdk and you should be all set. Make sure lilo is using this initrd image. Glitz.

The Nvidia kernel driver file was linked against the header file of the older kernel, therefore it has to be re-linked for the new kernel. A re-install should solve the problem. Glitz.

That may be true, doesn't stop it from being a crappy format. From a technical standpoint it was a relatively well thought out and extensible format that lent itself well to streaming similar to mp3 or ogg. I implemented an encoder once for the GIF '89 format (circa 1990) and found the LZW compression interesting. I don't remember anymore, however, if the number of palette entries was limited to index sizes of 8 bits or if larger indexes could be specified. It's not great for true colour images though. I switched to .TGA files for that. Glitz.

Just out of curiosity, how long do they have to apply for renewal? Glitz.

If the cartridges do not contain the print head (ie. the print head is part of the printer) and a nozzle is clogged then changing the print cartridge may not help. I have an old Epson Colour Stylus and when the nozzles get clogged I usually have to break out the isopropyl alcohol. I usually cut a narrow strip of paper, thread it under the nozzles, and then apply some alcohol to the paper and rub it under the nozzles. If there is no change in the pattern after doing this then there may vary well be something wrong with the printer. Glitz.

The LZW compression patent has expired and as far as I know UNISYS hasn't extended it. In other words, GIF is now public domain. Glitz.

I'm not sure, but you still may need to configure a PCI driver (even if only a generic one) to access the card as a com port. Glitz.

It's not just Mandrake though. I have yet to see Suse 8.2 on store shelves. Redhat has completely disappeared. And the only other version I've seen in a while is some really old version of TurboLinux. Glitz.

I think one of the big problems with the boxed sets is they come out too often. Most of the retailers here seem to have dropped Linux altogether and I think I know why. They can't seem to sell their current inventory before a new version of the distribution comes out. Futureshop is still selling ML8.2 and 9.0 as well as Suse9.1. I think they want to get rid of those inventories before they commit to buying newer versions for sale (if they even intend to carry on selling Linux). I don't blame them. Afterall, who would buy LM8.2 if LM9.1 is available. I can't even find Linux distributions at two other retailers anymore. I think it might help if Linux distros had some kind of a policy to take back (or exchange) any unsold boxes when new versions come out. At least that way the retailers wont get stuck holding the bag all the time and therefore may be more inclined to sell Linux. Ah well...what'a ya gonna do? Personally, I don't buy stuff over the internet. I don't know why. Maybe it's a trust issue or maybe its not coming away with something physical to hold in my hands. I also hate ordering things that are not immediately available (ie. have to be back ordered). I think maybe it's because I lose interest in things quickly. I've toyed with the idea of getting a laptop for 1.5 years now. The feeling comes and goes. I really want it but then I think, it will take weeks to get here and by then I'll probably have lost interest so why bother. At any rate, I've managed to save a lot of money because of this :wink: Glitz.

Ah, you want it to look consistent from desktop to desktop. Hmmm, I may be wrong but as long as the GTK libraries are installed it should work under any window manager. I suppose that in a pinch you could link it statically. You should be able to use any toolset, really. All you have to do is distribute the libraries with your program. That way, if the person doesn't have them installed, then he can install them. As for built in GUI libraries, I have tried XBASIC a bit: http://xbasic.sourceforge.net/ A good site (although a bit dated) for information about XBASIC is: http://www.maxreason.com/software/xbasic/xbasic.html It provides a complete IDE with GUI designer, is written for 32/64 bit processors and compiles to a standalone executable file that runs just about as fast as C compiled code. Best of all your code looks identical under Linux and Windows and all that is required is a recompile of the code to run it under the other system. By the way, XBASIC has been in development for over 10 years and is not BETA software. The current version is 6.2.3. Glitz.

A toolkit is just a library of functions (sometimes with an underlying architecture to make the pieces work together). So what you're looking for is a language with the "toolkit" built in? I don't know anything like that off hand. I suppose as a lowest common denominator you could use the X window functions directly or the svgalib library. What is the problem with using a toolkit anyway? Glitz.

I remember reading the statements in question and what Linus was saying was that the open source community shouldn't be too worried about patents because if there was a patent issue they would simply find a different way to do it that wouldn't involve the patent in question. It's been a while since I used my ATI AIW pro card but doesn't GATOS come with it's own TV viewer program? ATITV or something like that? I never used XAWTV with my card. There are also other programs for capturing video (though I've never used them). Glitz.

I'm not at a linux machine at the moment but isn't there a command like "ld" that creates a database of libraries and their version numbers or something like that? I've never had to use it but I think I've seen it in a couple of readme files for various things...Then again I may be halucinating :wink: Glitz.
