  1. That may help... http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=2545 MOttS
  2. Well not bad. But I don't see much differences with Konq... ??? I emerged mozilla-firebird-bin. I guess it would be faster if I would have compile it. Anyway. MOttS
  3. 0.6 is in the portage tree (Gentoo). I'm emerging it right now.. will give it a try since it is GTK based and I want to switch to XFce. MOttS
  4. Whatever you are connecting to the computer, Linux detect the thing automatically. Rare is the hardware that is not autodetected. And you never have to reboot. MOttS
  5. Oh wow.. XFce4 seems nice from the screenshots on http://www.xfce.org/ . It will be out August 3 though. I think I will wait 'till there. KDE is usually in the portage tree the same day it is out .. hope it will be the same for XFce4. sud_crow, thanks for the offer with FluxBox but to me, this is too much like BlackBox. I compiled BlackBox last January when I first installed Gentoo. I used it a couples of day while KDE was compiling (haha). Since then I reinstalled the whole thing and the only DE I have on the system is KDE. I'm looking for something else .. but not Blackbox/Fluxbox. Thx guys! MOttS
  6. No later than this week, my friend (a windows only user) had a presentation to do Windows xp was refusing to start. So he called me and told him to boot the cd and do the 'repair' trick. He called me the day after to thanks me. The only thing you have to know is if the system ask you 'do you want to format' (or something like that) then this is not the 'repair' option. 'Repair' isn't destructive and all you datas will be there after that... don't worry. MOttS
  7. Oh really? .. I don't want to contaminate my system man! What's wrong with Gnome 2.2.1? Is there anything I should know before starting to compile? Thx MOttS
  8. In order to use Twinview, I only add to put some stuff in the "Device" section and restart X (maybe the computer too...). Here it is. Section "Device" Identifier "NVidia" Driver "nvidia" # Personnal Options: Option "NoLogo" "0" Option "CursorShadow" "1" Option "CursorShadowXOffset" "4" Option "CursorShadowYOffset" "2" Option "DigitalVibrance" "0" Option "DPMS" Option "NvAGP" "1" # TWINVIEW: Option "TwinView" "1" Option "SecondMonitorHorizSync" "30-50" Option "SecondMonitorVertRefresh" "60" Option "TVOutFormat" "COMPOSITE" Option "TVStandard" "NTSC-M" Option "MetaModes" "1024x768,800x600" EndSection Notice that I have a 17' screen and a TV screen. The wife can watch a DIVX while I'm here writing/reading about Linux .. YIHA! Also, I suggest you to look at the nVidia README file for all the options. 10. Hi all Since I'm using Linux, I've always use KDE. IceWM is on my server and I don't like it that much (not for everyday use at least). I like to clic, this is why I have stick to KDE 'till now. So the question: Which desktop environment should I emerge now? Don't just say 'whatever' and clic 'Submit'. Please provide some explainations as for why I should use 'whatever' environment instead of KDE. Thx for helping me ... MOttS
  11. No idea here but what about a nice format and a reinstall ? My 2 cents MOTts
  12. You don't need to reinstall Windows since only a couple (maybe 1, 2 or 3 or whatever) of files were destroyed or corrupted. So I suggest you to try the REPAIR option before to reinstall Windows. This is really easy, just boot the WinXP cd. It should detect that Windows is alrealy installed and ask you if you want to REPAIR it. Choose this option and it should works. It is basically going to delete some crutial DLLs and put them back on the hard drive. All the programs will still work after that and everything will be there again. The partition is not formated. 14. Ok try this: Boot cd1 of Mandrake. At the welcome screen, press F1. Then type 'rescue' (without the quote). This will bring you to a menu where one of the options is 'reinstall windows boot loader' (or something similar). Select this option and once it did what it has to do, reboot. Notice that this will erase LILO from the master boot record. If it doesn't work and you want to reinstall LILO to boot Linux, do the following: Boot cd1 of Mandrake. At the welcome screen, press F1. Then type 'rescue' and select from the option the one that look like 'reinstall LILO'. This will reinstall LILO on the MBR. Notice that WinXP comes with a nice REPAIR option. You only have to boot the cd instead of selecting 'install' (ie press ENTER), type 'R' to repair the installation (put back all the dlls that were maybe erase somehow). Good luck MOttS
  15. This isn't like any other distro too. Gentoo is a text install. You are left in a console and you have to know what to do in order to install the distro. No MCC, only the good old console. But I admit it, 18.50 is cheap ;-) MOttS
  16. Textar is a user on pclinuxonline.com and here. He's making RPMs for SuSe and MDK users. You can find them at the following site: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distribut...ontrib/texstar/ or go at the following site and follow the steps to add one of the mirrors to your urpmi database. http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/urpmiweb.php btw, all those are for kde 3.1.2 But you really only need kdebase to have kde 3.1.2 installed on your system. The remainings are addons. MOttS
  17. This is your cdrom line. The device is /dev/scd0 and not /dev/hda3. To mount it just type as root mount /mnt/cdrom and your should see your datas. If you are trying to mount a music cd (.wav, not mp3) look here: http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php?t=4831 MOttS
  18. Slagathor, you have to uncomment (remove the ';' sign) some lines in the [printers] section for your printer to be shared. Look at my [printers] section to inspire yourself ( :-D ). Once it is done, restart Samba and search for the printer from a Windows machine. That should work.. If it doesn't work, post the whole smb.conf here. MOttS
  19. Hi Slagathor If you are able to browse the Windows machine and they are able to browse you then YES .. that is supposed to be simple. What about posting your Samba config file here? (/etc/samba/smb.conf) Are you able to print in Linux? Do you use CUPS? Here is the relevant section in my /etc/samba/smb.conf file: # NOTE: If you have a CUPS print system there is no need to # specifically define each individual printer. # You must configure the samba printers with the appropriate Windows # drivers on your Windows clients. On the Samba server no filtering is # done. If you wish that the server provides the driver and the clients # send PostScript ("Generic PostScript Printer" under Windows), you have # to swap the 'print command' line below with the commented one. [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no # to allow user 'guest account' to print. guest ok = yes writable = no printable = yes create mode = 0700 # ===================================== # print command: see above for details. # ===================================== ; print command = lpr-cups -P %p %s # using cups own drivers (use generic PostScript on clients). ; print command = lpr-cups -P %p %s # using cups own drivers (use generic PostScript on clients). lpq command = lpstat -o %p lprm command = cancel %p-%j # This share is used for Windows NT-style point-and-print support. # To be able to install drivers, you need to be either root, or listed # in the printer admin parameter above. Note that you also need write access # to the directory and share definition to be able to upload the drivers. # You must disable (by commenting out) the share above if you enable this. # For more information on this, please see the Printing Support Section of # /usr/share/doc/samba-2.2.1a/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf # Please note that this has not yet been tested as packaged here with CUPS. ;[print$] ; path = /var/lib/samba/printers ; browseable = yes ; read only = yes ; write list = @adm root MOttS
  20. Well, that's your problem. You need an IP masquerading rule, and Mandrake uses shorewall for this. So, if you turn the firewall on, you should have your internet connection sharing working. If you need to access the box the ICS is on, you can (until you get the hang of shorewall rules) turn the policy for masq->fw and fw->masq to accept by editing /etc/shorewall/policy and restarting shorewall. Right! Turn Shorewall on, that should solve your problem. MOttS
  21. Hey! .. this is funny man. This is Mandrake Linux modified by some guys at "Université de Sherbrooke" here in Quebec! Vive le Québec! MOttS
  22. I tested 2.5.74 last week for my scanner problem I wasn't able to boot at all. I probably miss something in the config since things are placed in a different manner. Hope you guys good luck with it! (well me too since I'll try it out again tonight MOttS
  23. Look at this for your /dev/hda1 line. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...p?p=37920#37920 HTH MOttS
