  1. I love mozilla because it does everything IE did for me and more. Konquerer i guess is a good enough browser but it has one of the plugin support that IE and Mozilla have (i use alot of flash). It also seemed very basic at best. Mozilla is by far the best internet browser out there.
  2. Someone hand me a barf bag. That article makes me sick. When I switched to linux a year ago to most of my non-gaming functions Linux was a bit tough to work with, but now that I have it, everything but software installation is a piece of cake (i still can't get dosbox or dosemu to work on my laptop). They bull about how Linux is a clone of their technology when their technology is a clone of apple and unix technology. Anyone recognize all the simularities between bash and dos? (switching to bash was as simple as learning better commands) I think this might be good for Linux as people realize that there is something else out there aside from microcrap. I think the thing that sickens me the most is the linux dude whos pockets are lined with microcrap money saying that Linux is worthless and a mismatch of jumbled roads leading to destruction (yah there is some justification, but the more i watch linux the more i realize that linux is the same os with different bells and whistles on each distro).
  3. I have a few questions regarding something my family has been planning for awhile. In our house there are some 8+ computers (running windowsxp, windows2000, mandrake10OE, fedora core 2)hooked together with a peer-to-peer network (ethernet). There are two printers which we often share on the network but it had gotten tideous to keep turning on two different computers just to print something. Finally I convinced my dad to let me make a print server. At first I tried RedHat 9.0 but I couldn't get the computer to be recognized on the network. After hours of tedious and mindnumbing work I installed windows 98 on the machine and did it that way. Although it works, I'm worried that the windows 98 box is a security risk to our network which is always connected to the internet (cable modem). I was hoping someone could tell me the answer to two simple questions. 1)What linux would be best for the sole purpose of being a print server (the computer has 233mhz cpu and 48mb of ram)? 2)What do I need to make the windows and linux machines see the printers on the printserver? Any help is much appreciated.
  4. Wine. And yes it can. Its done all over the place which is why I thought there might be somebody who's had my problems which are not covered by any of the readme's i've seen.
  5. I was able to get starcraft and broodwar (the expansion) to install and play fine under wine with the exception of 2 problems. One, I can't get sound to work. And two I can't get blizzard to upgrade it through battlenet (the way I normally do it). Is there anyone out there that has fixed similar problems to this?

    Linux Games

I've been with linux for nearly a year now and in that time I've found myself primarily trying to force windows games in linux. Although this has worked in some cases (unreal tournament) it hasn't working in most other cases (steam). What I'm looking for is some good linux games. I'm not talking about linux ports to windows games, I'm talking about games which are native linux, or have linux and windows versions. I've looked at www.happypenguin.com (i think thats it) and www.sourceforge.net but I was wondering if anyone who's been around the block more than me know of anywhere else I can look. Primarily i'm interested in action (primarily FPS) and strategy games. Suggestions?
  9. For all my non windows computers i use Mdk 10 OE. For windows I use 98 and XP. I've looked over this forum and come to the conclusion that I can't figure out what I need to do. What I want to do is make it so that I can put my laptop primarily on the windows network and share files between the two. I know vaguely what Samba is but have had no success in getting it to work or anything else. What do I need to do?
  10. In hopes to start playing my favorite game counter-strike I found the tutorial http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/wfsect...hp?articleid=32 and started working with it. The problem arose when i tried finding the (~/.cvswinex/config and ~/.transgaming/config) files. I tried browsing through my winex directory (/home/john/winex) but found nothing. I tried a find, but for some reason it kept crashing (another problem for another day). Can anyone tell me where I can find these files? moved from games to emulation - tyme
  11. i've looked over it several times and come to the same conclustion. I have no idea what to do with it.
  12. Dang you. Why couldn't u have made a petition to make "If Diablo 2 or Warcraft 3" would have a native port to linux. I love blizzard but WOW is of no interest to me.
  13. For us Americans, is there anyway to view the article?
  14. this is the contents of the file. 15. Although i've used linux for several months i rarely use rpm files (i prefer tar ) and the main reason behind this is the fact that i'm never told where the file goes. I just downloaded a new game with a rpm file. I installed the rpm and Mandrake says everything is great except for one minor detail. I have no friggin idea where i go to actually use it. I tried find, but that didn't work. Any suggestions on where to look for where rpms plant their stuff?
  16. Couldn't have said it better myself.
  17. I would like to say that windows is not a virus. Viruses although annoying show the work of dedicated programmers who put out a product that works. Windows on the otherhand puts out a product that doesn't even work half the time. Would anyone be aftraid of viruses if they often went "illegal function, please reboot virus and try again" No I say. So stop dissing all those dedicated hackers who produce fully functional programs.
  18. I'm all for paying for software. Sheez i've been with windows all my life. But what gets to me are these "club membership" things with mandrake and winex. I want to buy a piece of software, get a nice cd and not have to worry about paying yearly for something i may forget about. I know some have told me to just sign up for the minumum amount of time, but the problem is after that, i get no updates of any kind, no bug fixes etc. What I want to see is the pay 60 bucks for Mandrake 10 student edition, 100 business, 200 egads what do u need 8 cds for anyway version. I don't want to be paying 30-60 bucks a year (although it may be cheaper that way depending on the rate of number increase.) With winex I want to purchase winex for 30 bucks lets say and then get unlimited patches to upgrade it. Its what comercial games do. Yes, if they come out with something totally new like maybe WinexII which gives new features yadda yadda then i'll buy that too if I decide i need it. But i'm not going for the pay per time period crap I see more and more with linux. Paying isn't my problem. Thats what my job is for.
  19. from the linux noob Huh?
  20. I have a rage moblility video card on my laptop and just installed UT on itusing the 436 version installer, but also the 428(i wanted it as simple as possible because my windows machines have never installed the patches and just used the original cd version) but both have the same problem. The two video settings I can choose are glide or opengl and both have the error: appError called: Couldn't initialize SDL: No available video device When i saw this i went to harddrake and saw that my video card was not only installed but configured perfectly. I'm not sure what to do about it and would love to play UT in linux. Any suggestions?
  21. I was reading up on all the old posts and saw one regarding linux games from winex to direct porting. I was intrigued by this and saw that it was about 2 years old. I'm fairly new to the entire linux thing (didn't even know what linux was until about 2 years ago and didn't start using it until a few months ago) and I was wondering if the situation has changed in regards to linux games. Although I am mostly curious about the status of porting/emulating well known windows games, I am also curious about truely original linux games. I'm not talking about clones but something which is a new idea. I would most appreciate any input on this since I am 2 inches away from going totally linux (i noticed all my programs except for games and a scanner program are linux based on my windows machine), and I wonder if it is really worth it for a gmaer like me to give windows the finger.
  22. i'm not sure what happened but now mozilla works. I used urpmi to install gaim and then by accident i clicked the mozilla icon and boom it works. I guess it installed some file which it needed but never told me about. Gad i'm a noob.
  23. I decided to put mandrake 10 OE on my dell latitude cpx laptop and everything went well till i tried to use mozilla (the browser of choice) in KDE (my desktop of choice). With my other computers it was a simple switching of things like the panel menu then everything was fine but this time I tried to use mozilla but it tried booting up for about 10 seconds before not showing up. I downloaded the version from the web using konquer but the same problem existed. Anyone got any suggestions?

    ATI cards

I use an ATI Radeon 9200 on my main machine and it works like a beut in both windows and linux (md10 Oe). The only problem I have is that sometimes I have to wiggle the mouse while linux is booting otherwiese my screen goes blank, but frankly thats not enough for me to use anything else. On another computer in my house there is a Ge-force 4 something and it works great but I'll always prefer ATI because it gives you more bang for your buck.
  25. I've had a fair (ok ok, not that great) amount of experience using mandrake and redhat linux (i prefer mandrake for personal computer, redhat for server) and am at a total loss to what is wrong. I put redhat 9 on an old computer to make it a print server. I want it to share a Brother 1440 printer to all the computers on my network, with most of them being windows.\ (xp or 2000). However, no matter how i work it i can't get any of tehm to recognize the printer. To tell you what i've done: I've told to the print setup to share the printer to all hosts and all users I've told samba to share the file dev/usb/lp0 which is the port the printer is using. Can anyone give me some advice?
