  1. I think another good thing about madrake, mandriva etc, is that they have a multitude of desktops while other distros sometimes don't. On Mandrake 10.1 OE, I tried out at least five of them. I stuck with kde because thats the kind of system I like. Gnome has always seemed so blah in my eyes. But again, a desktop is like linux, find your own, then get in bar fights with people who use anything else.
  2. I first tried Red Hat 9. I was satisfied with using that for my linux needs (as sparse as they were back then). Well after a few months, Red Hat declared they would stop their free personal edition and replace it with Fedora which would have absolutely no support. At that point I went to find another distro (later went back to try Fedora and was simply unimpressed by it). I decided to try Mandrake Linux because my Linux friend used it as the distro of his choice. It was version 10 that I was able to install properly on my system (9.2 I think it was never would install). I stayed with Mandrake up until Mandriva because of this great forum and how easy it was to do many things. Now I've moved away from Mandrake for several reasons (new name, nuiances with doing things that finally got to me) and currently moving along with Debian based distros. Mandriva is a fine distro, but as everyone says, you just need to find your own.
  3. You might try beatrix (www.watsky.net). It runs on almost anything fairly well. While its fairly to the point with the original packages, the site explains how to get any from the debian/ubuntu world. Great forums as well. You'll find me slinking around there as well.
  4. Join the club. I got the xorg6.8 drivers and they fixed my ati problems.
  5. In regards to gnome: 1)my first appearance with it was with redhat7 I think it was. It just looked bland and ugly. 2)Lack of Konquerer like ftp program (can't figure out the others) 3)The new open a new window with every double click "feature" 4)gnome utilities to me seem clunky 5)don't care much for the general appearance of theme's i've tried. Gnome is a good desktop to use (use it with beatrix at work jsut because I'm too lazy to switch it to something else) but at home I'm KDE all the way. XFCE I've tried and actually enjoyed. I'm concidering switching to that since it takes a little less memory (well just for the laptop, thats slower than my great gaming machine). I'll take a look at those other ones listed: rat poison looking glass window maker (isn't that ICEWM???) fluxbox waimia twm enlightenment Thanks for the suggestions (and any more that may come).
  6. In the years I have work with linux (egads its 2 years now that I ahve been using linux) and I've come across several linux desktops. Right now KDE is my favorite because it has a multitude of great programs and is appealing to look at. I've tried gnome (can't stand it), ICEWM and XFCE (I think...). What I was wondering if there were any other desktops? I use ICEWM for my slow computer (although thinking of changing it to XFCE since it looks better) and KDE for my better computers since they can handle the extra load. Basically I want to try out a few new desktops to see if there is something I like more than KDE. Aside from plain x windows (which I couldn't figure out how to use), are there any other gems to look at?
  7. From what I hear adobe won't port otehr software because Linux has free image editors for the casual user and no interest in high end graphics work. Someday perhaps, but not anytime soon.
  8. To concider linux, first get the family through baby steps first. Get them into firefox, thunderbird, openoffice etc. Each has their own selling point (firefox faster downloading, more secure: thunderbird is the junk mail filter: open office is the microsoft office capatability but not the $300 pricetage). Once you do that then show them your favorite distro with these programs on it. This way the learning curve is even less. Its what I'm doing right now come to think of it
  9. I'm getting the same problem whenever I try to urpmi something (for instance I needed a file tried to urpmi it and I got the "urpmi database locked" message. Rebooting did nothing, removing the .LOCK file didn't work. Its interesting because I had nothing else urpmied at the time (nor nothing new since I logged in). How do I fix this?
  10. I use whichever comes default with the distro I'm using. Both have proved just as useful/nifty as each other.
  11. I have an ATI Raedon 9200SE. It runs great in windoze, but has problems running under linux. I have Mandrake 10.1 OE installed and xorg 6.7 installed. Now heres the problem. The ATI drivers need xorg 6.8 not 6.7. Also, reading the release documents leads me to believe that xorg 6.8 has better drivers for my card (hopefully removing my problems). Thusly I went to download xorg 6.8.2. Great. I did it, however when I unzipped them, there was no configure file, no nothing. No instructions on how to install it, no patches to update 6.7 etc. Mandrake doesn't have the update. Is there anyway I can get xorg 6.8.2 installed on my system? I really hate having to do the mouse dance every boot up (the mouse dance is when i jiggle the mouse at a certain point in bootup in order for x to start, otherwise my monitor goes dead due to no input and i hear the startup music going, sometimes this doesn't even work). Any help appreciated.
  12. sigh the last time I tried playing that game in windoze, it refused to save my profile. When I played it in linux, the graphics were all funky (i mean really funky). Somewhere on this board is a thread of me begging for help in regards to that. It looked really fun and stuff, but sigh, nothing.

    ADSL

Use the ethernet card if at all possible. Then you can easily configure it. I'm not sure about how the usb thing works.
  14. Basically gates is saying that it won't work unless you use his crummy stuff. He's also saying that many programs which do the same thing is bad. More crap. Sorry, but while I may like open-office, k-office is better for bob down the road.
  15. Why name your next os after a cow?
  16. is there a link I might get or should i hope a google works?
  17. I hope I put this in the right forum... Anyways, I'm trying to build a Linux distrubution to impress my boss to make he decide to do at least a partial switch (if nothing else) to linux. I work at an elementary school and while I have found a multitude of applications for education, I have found nothing which is a filter for the internet. I'm looking for a filter which could reduce (hopefully eliminate) the chance of the kids going to internet sites which are innappropriate (porn sites, anarchists sites etc). Even though the kids are always supervised, we're hoping to prevent accidental exposure as well as head off the really dedicated morons (why does every class have one?) Can anyone suggest something which might work for this?
  18. Its doubtful my job (I work at a private elementary school) will anytime switch to linux. However, something which is being done is the servers in the school are being switched to linux. Right now the school webpage and email server are redhat based. When we get a new main server (since the current one is junk) its going to be linux based. I am also helping slowly getting linux in their minds by talking about open-office and mozilla. Hopefully one day they'll see linux as better than paying the outragous microcrap fees for the os and software.
  19. I think its hilarious how much people are running from IE. Microsoft thought that by keeping the same crappy browser people would be happy. Now they got their new improved browser (SP2 IE 6) and still people are fleeing. Do you know why? I've worked with IE6 and IE6 SP2 at work, and mozilla at home. Even with the "pop up blocker" I got as many pop ups with IE6. Not the case with Mozilla. I think I've had maybe 4 since I downloaded months ago. Also, this new "security feature" in IE6SP2 is very annoying. Everytime I tell IE6SP2 to download a file, it immediately blocks the file (saying it might be a virus) and then I have to go through this annoying "trust it dammit" menus until I can finally download it. Trus me when I say that the other computer-phobe teachers are not going to like it when the IT guy decides to install SP2 on every machine (something I've been fighting). Microsoft needs to understand that no longer can they keep throwing out crap and expect us to use it. Mozilla is better in virtually every way and Microsoft knows it (I'm just waiting for them to take Mozilla code and add it as new "innovative features" to IE). I've also seen a switch from windows to Linux. One coworker of mine is seriously intrested in using linux since she's tired of dealing with the blue screen of death, constant viruses, etc etc etc. Me personally, I got 3 computers up and running in my living space, only 1 of which has windows, and thats because I'm addicted to games which Cedegra won't run. I've seen the trend of where companies have started to take notice to Linux (even Microsoft though they say it'll be no problem to crush Linux) and unless something shows that Linux is worse than windows, then its not going away.
  20. I've always gone with redhat for the server but I hear suse and mandrake are good as well. In my experience I've found a couple things easier with redhat (usually server stuff) and everything else easier with mandrake (like reading ntfs and listening to mp3s).
  21. I installed the source for the linux via the cd but while some problems have been solved (for instance my computer not loading GUI unless I move the mouse) my 3d graphics SUCK!!!!!! I did everything according to the tutorial above, I restarted the computer, but the 3d graphics get worse and worse. I'm just going to get rid of the drivers and put back xfree86. At least then I could use 3d graphics.
  22. Ok I worked with the instructions and everything went well until i went to the /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod subdirectory and tried to run make.sh The following error occured: I've looked at the readme on ATI, and it says I need to install the source code for linux. Unfotuanatly I have no clue what to do. If the above solution is right, please help me do it, if not, please help me fix the problem. Every minute is another minute I can't play my 3d games.
  23. wow. Yah. I think I'll try that.
  24. Out of curiosity, where does Microsoft get the idea they have any legal rights on TCP/IP? I thought that was an opensource network protocol.
  25. Ok whenever Linux boots into the GUI I come up with the following problem. In order for the GUI to actually appear on my monitor (without a lack of signal message on my monitor) I must move around my mouse at a certain point in the startup and keep moving it till the GUI image fully appears. I have an ATI Raedon 9200 SE AGP video card. Not using ATI drivers, they never seem to work for me.
