    MDK10CE "bugs?"

should you specify cooker mirrors specifically or just go with the sources in Mandrake Update? 422 megs of updates...that's a lot dontcha think? is this release less buggy, as buggy or buggier than 9.2?
  2. don't even think of installing Knoppix on a laptop. It's good as a live CD, but unless you want to recompile the kernel and do lots of editing (XF86, et cetera), don't install it on any laptop. Use Debian instead. Or mandrake :) As the warning signs everywhere say, it's not designed for HD install. It won't be as 'neat'.
  3. i guess it uses bz2 compression, which is amazing in compression ratio by the way. if you're installing from a 4.7 GB DVD, bz2 can pack in more than thrice that amount. :o
  4. and yet another stupid suggestion from yours truly... why don't you change sources.list to "stable"? Debian uses old software but after all it's optimized for stability.
  5. nojjynb, try running ut2004 with the option "software" or openGL [user@localhost ut2004]# ut2004 --software sorry kungfooya, I don't know anything about your problem. Perhaps another person can help out? anyone?
  6. welcome to the board please tell more about your problem, What video card, motherboard, parameters, etc.
  7. go to http://openwall.com. You'll find a lot of stuff there. I recommend using RSA-based encryption if you really want security, but if you forget the passphrase you'll never get your data back.
  8. Why don't you try converting it to a .zip file? I've never opened rar files with Ark myself, but I've opened passworded zip files. Sorry if this sounds like a stupid solution, but I never use passworded archives for security anyway...I know too well how easy they are to break.
  9. /var stores files a server normally shares, /usr stores your programs (OpenOffice, etc). Servers use /var and /tmp a lot, and it makes sense to make it more secure by separating them. Are you going to use your laptop as a server? :o I have 4 partitions, /, /home, /usr and swap. I also have 1Gb FAT32 for sharing with Windows. I put /usr on a separate partition just because it's neater and easier to see how much disk space my programs are using. I don't have very much. :( Makes it easier to delete programs without destroying my install. The "server" layout has /var and /tmp on separate partitions, but is your laptop running as a server? I recommend *my* setup of course :)
  10. ReiserFS is the recommended filesystem for PCs, I don't know why Mandrake has Ext3 by default. ReiserFS 4 is supposedly four times faster than NTFS. B) I can't wait for it B)
  11. uh... is it YOUR file or do you want to break the password? I, uh, have some experience with that. but if Ark or fileroller has the problem you might want to post more details about the problem.
  12. Aha. the 2.4.22-10mdk kernel does not need the Synaptics driver, just use the PS/2 driver. unload it and use driver "mouse". only in 2.6 will you need to install the synaptics driver. What does "dmesg |less" say? I'm quite sure the Mandrake 9.2 default kernel will detect the Synaptics touchpad. To be safe, make the touchpad "CorePointer". the PS/2 port does NOT support hotplugging, windows or linux. your docking port could be using some proprietary port that's designed for M$Win to bypass the hot-plugging limitation. I don't know, I've run out of my knowledge in this topic. Sorry. :(
  13. When I load the firmware with modem_run, the LEDs go through the proper sequence but I get no prompts. Then when I type pppd call adsl, nothing happens. The LEDs show that it's working though, but ifconfig shows nothing, pinging does not work. Hm, I'll try disabling the firewall, but at least DHCP should get through right?
  14. shouldn't the touchpad be the CorePointer? It's always there... I'm confused. Synaptics driver works for Mouse1 but Mouse1 is NOT a touchpad, according to your XF86Config. Actually you can use PS/2 on both mice. Synaptics emulates PS/2 but without advanced features. BTW, what kernel are you using? 2.6 handles mice differently from 2.4. look at your dmesg log to see if the Synaptics touchpad is detected.
  15. did you remember to load evdev as a module or compile it into the kernel? put evdev in /etc/modprobe.preload without it, the synaptics driver will crash X.
  16. "4GB of gentoo is only 2.8GB on mandrake." uh, what do you mean? still, gentoo's pretty good right?
  17. yep. basically copy that section. Change the identifier (Mouse2) and the device (/dev/mouse or whatever). Then in the section "ServerLayout", add inputdevice Mouse2 "SendCoreEvents" (look at the other entries for the syntax) both of the mice should work :D
  18. Welcome to the board! About the first one, need more info...what card, what network About the second, here's a howto: http://www.MandrakeUsers.org/index.php?sho...indpost&p=63552 addition to that: load evdev as a module or compile it into the kernel, otherwise your X server won't start. In case you're new to linux here's how to do this: edit /etc/modprobe.preload and add this: evdev Then save it, and restart X, your touchpad should work.
  19. the touchpad needs a driver in 2.6, since it handles mice differently. you can google it easily. then just load the driver in XF86Config and make sure you have evdev loaded as a module or compiled in the kernel. the tap-to-click will then work, as well as other advanced features.
  20. recompile? if you want to...my suggestion is, go into terminal, su to root, then: service apmd start but in my opinion ACPI is better than APM. what laptop are you using? if it's quite new then you could use acpi. here's how: Mandrake Control Center >>system>>services then select acpid as "on boot", and start it up. deselect apmd and/or stop it. then reboot...just kidding :D  just re-login.
  21. smeared some paint on my hiking boots, then stamped it on a piece of paper...then scanned it in. :D used Photoshop
  22. can or can't? recompile a kernel? not so fast...can you post more info about your problem please? starting with the output from lsmod, that might show something...
  23. Actually whenever I compile a kernel, I use Mandrake's config file, even if it's for a vanilla kernel. I get lots of "missing symbol" LIRC, souncards, etc that I don't really use. I just open xconfig and re-save the thing. However it's a glimpse into the differences between Mandrake's and vanilla kernels. Supermount is one, but I got a substitute patch that works just as well. I also patch some bootsplash of my own, but I'm still trying to get it to work. Mandrake has good programmers, but it's a really long leap of intuition if we start to suspect that they secretly modify parts of their kernel. Would they really waste that much effort? And anyway, their kernel has too many hardware drivers, "bloat" but still required since they're aiming for the "ease of use" market. B)
  24. do you have a "reader" cd drive? or just the combo drive? k3b needs some configuring as root I think. I'm gonna download 10.0, then burn it with k3b B) B) I can't wait...
  25. mine's technically broadband, but 256k adsl is too slow to download 3 CDs...I'll have to go to my friend's cable connection to download it. I'll have to wait then... :(
