I don't have any such problems and I use KDE but I'm also a Gentoo user. Mandriva by default has a lot of services running in the background and disabling some of them might help. Also try running top to see if there is something hogging your system resources.

Do you just have the logout option and nothing else? Cause I had that problem and found out that because of another error gdm was being used instead of kdm.

I'm in Mandrake 10.1 and I'm compiling something for Gentoo in a chroot environment. The only processes running besides the normal Mandrake ones are gaim and xchat. I ran top and couldn't find anything consuming a lot of my cpu except my compiling. So wth is going on here? It's very annoying!

aomighty, I did an emerge -s xmms looking for any xmms plugins and there's nothing like that in gentoo. cybrjackle, under preferences there is /dev/cdrom. And my directory is /mnt/cdrom which is a link to /dev/hdc.

I'm having this weird problem with xmms and nobody on the Gentoo board had an answer so I thought I'd run it by you guys. When I go to play a cd in xmms all it sees is my symlink from /mnt/cdrom to hdc. No songlist comes up. I'm using xine to play cds which is fine but this is just bugging me. If I can't get it figured out I'm going to emerge -C xmms and solve the problem. :P

You need to make a new category for me. I definitely know how to hack files, build my own kernel, troubleshoot to some degree, but user support? Ha! I confuse people. :P

I use cli a lot. Especially being a Gentoo user there is no GUI except what you have with your DE. I do prefer it for most things.

You also have to mount your dvds before it will see them.

I won't say what age I was :P but I have an 18 year old daughter that has been using Mandrake/Mandriva for two years and loves it. I got interested in linux cause I was fed up with Windows. I like to really customize my OS's and my options were so limited and I hated programs being built in (like IE) that I didn't want to use. So four years ago I went to Best Buy and bought the cheapest distro there which turned out to be Mandrake 8.1. I used Mandy for two years and then switched to Gentoo two years ago. Like I said, I really like to customize my OS's cause I'm really, really picky. (My husband says I'm a pain in the arse :lol: ).

I actually started with 8.1 as a complete linux newbie. I thought it was great. Everything worked fine for me. The only version I've had problems with is LE 2005 and that's because I have to set up the wireless card again everytime after a reboot.

Well I definitely want to wait until the bugs get worked out. Gentoo is for tinkering. I expect Mandriva to work out of the box as it always has and my daughter uses it so I don't feel like having to mess with her computer. Call me lazy. :P

I voted LE 2005 because that's what I have on my daughter's compuer. I have 10.1 on mine but don't plan on upgrading as I don't use it. I'm not sure if I'll upgrade my daughter's box or not. I'm going to keep reading and see what people have to say about 2006. I do have one problem with 2005 that's rather annoying but I don't want to trade one problem for another.

Slack is the only distro that you have to edit xorg? That's funny. If this guy thinks that about slack I'd hate to hear what he says about Gentoo. :D

I have a Toshiba but whenever I call in they ask which one I'm using so they obviously have more than one type. And even tho they don't support Linux I've never had a problem getting help when there was a problem with the modem or my connection. Forgot to add that you will have to go into MCC and use the internet connection wizard and set it up to use DHCP. But that's really easy to do and the wizard walks you right thru the steps.
