  1. Hello, I compiled kernel 2.6.3 but when I try to adjust the lilo.conf, the system won't let me save it even though I am logged in as root! The permissions are ok (rw, but no x) so I don't see why I can't save the file. Help?
  2. Well from what I've read from other users Shorewall is a nice frontend for iptables, so you could always give it a try, I am gonna do that as well.
  3. How old is the laptop you have, and what CPU does it have as well as RAM? Are you just wanna try out Mandrake 10 or do you want to permantly use Mandrake on that laptop? Then I would go for 9.2 and see if that one works.
  4. You could try asking MandrakeSoft, maybe no one here has experience with that. I think the 9.1 i586 version can do it too so my guess is the PPC version is the same.
  5. I was wondering if there is an open source package which could make your linux server run as an Exchange-compatible mail server. I know you can use IMAP in combination with Outlook but I also know there is a commercial available server which acts like a Exchange server.
  6. Well this might not be a very helpful post but you could upgrade to the latest version of Mandrake (9.2) to see if that one has a better driver for your soundcard. You can also search the net for an updated linux driver for your integrated soundcard.
  7. Ok maybe I haven't been very clear about my network, but the server running Mandrake 9.0 right now and being a mail/FTP/CS/www/SSH server , is going to be the firewall as well. So do I really need to setup the firewall (iptables or something similar) to do port forwarding to itself for those ports? Do you guys think it's a better idea to use a separate pc as a firewall only ?
  8. Hello, I am planning to make my Linux server act as a firewall as well and let all inet traffic pass through my server. That means I want to install a second network card, connect that one to my ADSL modem/router and leave the rest of my network connected to the other network card. I already downloaded Arno's iptables script and I want to use that one unless someone has a better suggestion? My server works as a proxy/mail/www/FTP/CS (Halflife) server, when I use Arno's script will this still be working? What do I have to keep in mind when I want to do this? Also, can my server be used as a transparent firewall?

I don't know College Linux, but have you ever tried an older version of Mandrake? Also, your videocard is integrated on the motherboard and shares its memory with the RAM? You can also see if your card is supported on the Mandrake site, maybe there are some remarks about it there.
  10. For your directory listing, there is a directive which you can use to allow dir browsing, it's not that hard to find in the Apache manual (I don't know it by heart else I would have told you here).

Hi, Well can you supply us with some more information? - which videocard + how much memory - which version of XF - you never had this problem with an older version?
  12. Hey, I would like to know some more about using Samba/Linux as a domain controller. I hope someone has some experience with that here. What can Samba do at the moment, only act as a NT4 domain controller or also as a Win2000 Active Directory domain? Is it very hard to setup Samba for a purpose like that? The clients we have are NT4/2000/XP pc's.
  13. Well, mIRC uses a specific port range (you can actually change the range) for DCC Send, and I think if you setup your firewall to allow those ports to pass, you should be fine. For me, if I can't send files through DCC, I can't DCC Chat as well.

    HP Deskjet 3650

Thx a lot, I'll try to install that driver and see what happens.
  15. Hi, I am trying to use my 3650 USB printer on my Mandrake 9.1 box. When I connect the printer to my pc and I go to harddrake, I see that linux has recognized the printer (it displays it as a hp 3600 series) and everything seems to be ok. I also added the printer using the add printer thingy, no problems there as well. Only when I try to print a test page, nothing comes out, but I don't get any error message or whatsoever. What could this be?
  16. Hello, I have some questions about upgrading the Linux kernel. At the moment I am running Mandrake 9.1 on my server, it's a Celeron 1300 with 512mb so I installed Mandrake pretty complete, with KDE and Mandrake Control Center. Is it easy to upgrade the kernel sort of automatically, in the way windowsupdate.com works? Is it also easy to make a backup of the kernel which you can restore in about 1 minute? Thanks
