  3. Thanks, solved everything. I thought I had already completed that step in a previous program install. Thanks again!
  4. I can't get passed this error message. I have java installed. Preparing to install... tail: `-1' option is obsolete; use `-n 1' Try `tail --help' for more information. LimeWireLinux.bin: line 326: [: `)' expected, found -z WARNING! The amount of /tmp disk space required and/or available could not be determined. The installation will be attempted anyway. This is my java directory /usr/java/j2re1.4.2_03 Anyone have any success in setting this up? Anyone know a workaround?
  5. Check the manufacturer's website for drivers for Linux, to see if any are available.
  6. Pretty much due to humidity, anything you burn on a cd and let sit for a good 5 or 6 years will go bad. Its not guaranteed to happen, as I've got a number of cds from around 1997-98 that are still fine, and they were burned on a 2x burner.
  7. How can you expect dedicated technical support for something that is absolutely FREE? Your not paying for tech support, so why should you get it? Its boards like this one that bring people together under a common interest, and provide our own style of support. Granted it may take a little longer than telephone support, but at least you'll get an answer...and a good one too...not some crappy level 1 tech support at a call center somewhere. For what you expect, Linux would have to almost become Microsoft-esque.

    Zip Drives

Iomega makes those too, and damn reliable too. :D I got to personally test the demos when we first came out with em. They have a 3 year warranty on em, compared with the 1 year warranty on everything else there. Also, if you call tech support to purchase it, they can give you a discount if you ask about it. If ya need anymore info, I'd be glad to help!

    Zip Drives

I used to work for Iomega, in their tech support branch. I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. About the click of death thing, its caused by drive heads becoming misaligned. This can happen if its dropped, or misused. Drives rarely exhibit this, but its not something that is really FIXABLE. Since there are moving parts in there, if you jostle them around, they'll definately break. This was more prominent with the older drives simply because they were built to look rugged. People would toss em around, into their briefcase, and just overall mistreat them. Thats how the clicking drive thing came about. Like I said, its not fixable, but rarely is it a problem. The drives are redesigned with more of a shock-absorbant type of framework, but its still not gonna prevent a clicking drive if its dropped off of your shelf or desk. Just use the drive properly and you won't have any problems. I'll try to get more info on this, as I expect to be reinstated into my prior tech support job with them within the next few days. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me, or ask away! :D
  10. Ah very good! Thanks alot for the info, that would explain it! :D
  11. Just wanted to know if this is normal. When I play a song in xmms, I'm unable to hear any sounds from gAIM. The sounds in gAIM will then queue until I turn off the song, then afterwards, will play a notification for every message I recieved during the timespan in which I had the song playing. SO... I just wanted to know if this is normal operation. I know in Windows I can do a whole slew of things with audio at the same time (Instant Messanger, Winamp, Media Player, etc.) Why is it that I can only use one at a time in Linux?
  12. K3b Essential if you like easy cd writing! :D
  13. UPDATE Fixed everything but the little lag problem (which I guess I can deal with) I went into the control center, changed the driver from snd-intel8x0 to i810_audio and restarted the PC. I opened gAIM and sent myself a message, the sound worked, but it was EXTREMELY fast (like fast forewarding a cassette), and after a few messages, the sound stopped alltogether. I went into the control center, changed it back to the snd-intel8x0 and rebooted. I opened gAIM and sent myself another message and VIOLA sound works again, and is working as I type this message. SO, the only real problem is with my lag situation, which from what I understand, should be solved by setting my arts autodelay to 1 second. That didn't work. We're slowly accomplishing what needs to be done! Thanks to everyone for the ideas and quick responses!!! :D
  14. Ok I solved the problem with xmms freezing, what I did was uninstalled both arts and ALSA outputs, restarted, then reinstalled the arts output, restarted. Now I'm able to play music in xmms and totem. I still have no sounds in gAIM though, and I've tried every output there is for the sound configuration within gAIM. Maybe I'll try nvaudio as the driver and see whats up (or other drivers). Also, I'm wondering about the "lag" when I play a song in xmms, I'll press play, and it starts the song, but when I press stop, it continues to play for roughly 2 more seconds even though the song itself has stopped. I adjusted the autodelay in the arts control panel for 1 second, but that didnt help. Is this a buffer issue or am I doing something else wrong?
  15. Good idea, yea the mixer was the first thing I checked, everything is good there. Gimme a few hours to get you guys the error log (Its 9am EST and I've got class)
  16. I've tried all of that, and the onboard sound works perfectly in XP. So I'm stumped, I've been known to just give up and reinstall for lesser reasons. Its a real shame though, I've got absolutely no clue whats goin on, maybe I'll try uninstalling again...
  17. I tried both aRts and ALSA output, same thing. I tried uninstalling the ALSA output thing, and the same thing happens. I also tried uninstalling the whole thing alltogether, then reinstalling it, but still it doesen't work? Think I should just cave and reinstall?
  18. Well, I was just messin around in Mandrake 9.2 and decided it was time to readjust the monitor resolution. It told me to restart X for the changes to take effect. I did so, then got an error about not being able to start a soundserver on startup. I restarted the computer 3 times and was able to get sound back, but now when I try to play an mp3 in xmms, it simply freezes the program. I can work around it and force quit, but thats quite strange. The same thing happens to Totem Media Player. I haven't a clue what I've done. My aRts Sound is set to a 3 second autodelay or whatever that is. Secondly, now my sounds in gAIM do not work either. What on earth did I do???
  19. I'm not sure what supermount is, let alone if its enabled. :P
  20. Ok, I just used regular Wine to install Diablo II, and everything went smoothly. I've encountered a problem when I try to play it though, it seems it won't detect my expansion CD in my cdrom. I can't figure it out... Any ideas?
  21. When running the WineX Game Manager, I try to install Diablo II, set the game directory to /usr/local/games and then select /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe as the executable to be run, then I hit INSTALL, but NOTHING ever happens. I've tried waiting as long as an hour, but nothing ever occurs, no cdrom activity, nothing. I've tried the other discs as well, just in case it was the wrong executable, but nothing happens. Anyone have any ideas?
  22. Peanut Linux You can give that a try, I've heard of moderate success when installing it on older machines, though I don't recall anyone installing it on an old laptop.

    nforce2 and 9.2

:D :D Ixthusdan, you've been a WEALTH of help. I simply installed the kernel-source and ran rpmbuild, restarted, and used the control center to configure my internet connection. I CANNOT thank you enough for your patience and help! I'm writing this message from my Mandrake 9.2 machine as we speak! :D

    nforce2 and 9.2

Where would I check to see if I have the kernel sources installed? rpmdrake? I checked there and it didn't say anything about kernel-sources or anything of the like. I ran the rebuild, and everything was fine until it got to the nvnet part of the rpm, where it error'd out and said to make sure my kernel sources are installed. There are only a few folders in my /usr/src directory. Hmmmm...

    nforce2 and 9.2

Well I tried using both rpm-build (installed it) and the tar file, but both reported errors. With rebuilding the rpm, I still get Permission Denied, and with the tar file, it reports a level1 error on 'make' and a level2 error on 'make install' Anyone have some real step-by-step instructions on how to successfully install nforce2 drivers in 9.2? BTW, thanks for the great suggestions!!! :D
