Upon further evaluation of my situation, I decided that the struggles with Mandriva 2005LE weren't worth the effort I had to put forth. Everything was just mucked up when I switched from 10.1 to 10.2. I guess I've too new a computer for the system to handle... Anyway, I downloaded both Ubuntu and MEPIS to check out. I installed MEPIS and didn't look back. It configured everything right out of the box. It even installed the nvidia drivers, logitech mx500 drivers and my WIRELESS drivers. All I needed to do was provide the WEP key. Now THAT'S a solution.

My how quickly things change. It survived exactly 2 reboots. This thing is driving me crazy. It works fine one minute, then the next its awful. Funny thing is 10.1 works FLAWLESSLY.

SOLVED! In xorg.conf I changed the mouse section from: changed protocol to "auto" and device to /etc/sysmouse However when I restarted everything went back to the old way without changes. Changed it in MCC.

That's an excellent idea. If I can't get 10.1 to do what I want, I'm going to take that avenue. Thanks!

Using MDK 10.1OE and ndswrapper 0.8 I installed the windows drivers bcmwl5a - HARDWARE PRESENT bcmwla5.sys - HARDWARE NOT PRESENT net2pg54 - HARDWARE PRESENT The trouble is, when I run iwconfig (I have wireless-tools installed) I never get anything remotely close to wlan0. All I get is this stuff: lo eth0 eth1 eth2 sit0 ^All of these have "no wireless extensions". Does anybody know where I'm going wrong? I need to get wlan0 to appear in the iwconfig to proceed any further. Do you need my modprobe.conf? the last lines of modprobe.conf read: alias wlan0 ndiswrapper install ndiswrapper /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ndiswrapper && {loadndisdriver 14e4 4320 /etc/ndiswrapper/bcmwl5a.sys /etc/ndiswrapper/bcmwl5a.inf;} Any help is surely appreciated!

Just for giggles I installed 10.1 OE. EVERYTHING works fine, front USB, rear USB, mouse, etc. Everything works... Is this an xorg hiccup?

When I boot into Mandriva 2005, I don't get any response to the mouse. I'm using a Logitech MX500 USB optical mouse. I have six usb ports on the back of the machine and two on the front. The mouse won't respond on any of these ports. Usually if the mouse is left plugged in, it turns on fine (the red optical light shines) but if you unplug it and plug it back in, nothing happens. It just appears as a dead mouse. I tried navagating through KDE via keyboard but the mandrake control center never actually opens. It just hangs and dies on its own. I guess it has something to do with the way it was installed during the actual installation of the OS. I remember old MDK versions would verify that the mouse worked prior to continuing the installation. Is there a command line tool or any other utility that I can use to try and resolve this? The mouse works great on every other PC I take it to.

Okay here's what I did so far. I used rpm -e nvidia to remove all nvidia packages that were installed by default by Mandriva. I then rewrote the xorg.conf file and replaced "nvidia" with default "nv". This allowed me to boot into KDE without a problem, I figure I need kernel sources installed to get the nvidia driver working properly. I now have a mouse problem, and will address that in the proper forum.

Okay guys, I've installed the Mandriva Limited Edition 2005 DVD and I can't startx. I'm getting fatal error, no screens found. After I tried a 'modprobe nvidia' as root, I was able to startx but it hangs every single time upon entering KDE. So here's what I need some help with. I think I need to install the nVidia driver from the DVD - from the command line. I don't know how to do this. I also think I need to install the kernel sources from the command line as well. I don't know how to do this either. I'm definately a command line novice. Can anybody give me a heads up? This will all be from the single DVD. Thanks all! :D

Having 9.0 been my first and 10.1 being my latest, I'm going to say that 9.1 was out-and-out my favorite. This was what turned me forever to MDK.

What version of the nVidia driver are you trying to install?

It's true. nVidia's linux support has been clearly superrior to ATI's. I'd never reccommend anything by ATI for a linux novice. Then again, I'd hardly reccommend anything by ATI to begin with, even though their performance typically edges out the nVidia hardware.

I know its kind of an obvious question, but did the hardware work for you under 10.0? In my experience, buffer underruns are typically something along the lines of screensaver-interrupt, low resources, or malfunctioning hardware. I trust the burner worked previously?

I think what I'm going to do prior to upgrading to 10.1OE whenever it's made publicly available, is install 9.1 or 9.2 for a bit, tinker around in there for a while, find the name of the elusive program and then install 10.1OE while remember what program it is. That'll solve this problem. I'll remember to post back when I figure out what it is.

Thats very close to what it looks like, but I definately remember it being a K-application. I tried even kde-apps.org but can find nothing.

It definately isn't KSysguard. I've checked out ksensors and that's not it either. The program used to be a vertical bar that displayed the activity of the CPU, ETH 0 interface, RAM and system uptime. It wasn't much, but it certainly was nice.

I remember back when I used to use MDK 9.1/9.2 there was a small program within KDE that allowed me to monitor ETH 0 usage, CPU usage and memory usage all within the same applet. I'm at a loss for what the program was called though. Can anyone remember what that program's name was and if it is still included with the version of KDE that ships with MDK 10.1CE? That lil program was mighty handy. Thanks all.

Since I've been using a laptop for a while, I've been outa the Mandrake loop for a while. I've got it back up and running but I can't seem to remember the exact command to run from a console to view a list of potential updates / programs from mandrake ftp mirrors. Anyone have any tips / tricks before I attempt an install of MDK 10.1 CE on this thing? Anybody attempt it with this kind of laptop before? I've used Knoppix 3.6 on it and it didn't detect the keyboard - of all things - so what do you think the odds are that I'll get a good, functional installation with an average ammount of hassle?

Has anyone had any experience with this type of printer in Mandrake 10.1 Community? While I can set the printer up with native support via USB, when I attempt to print anything, it simply feeds the paper into the printer and nothing else happens. I'm setting it up using the x1100 series driver (yea i know, which is probably accounting for my trouble) in the Mandrake Control Center - Printers area. The x1100 series driver is the closest match I have for this thing. I haven't setup any CUPS. Anyone have any idea on where to go with this?

Anybody know why that, during a longer (3+ minute) flash animation, that the audio and the video seem to de-sync from each other? Seems to me that I've been experiencing alot of lip movement followed by sound. Its not a large de-sync, maybe 1.5 seconds at the most, but its still enough to annoy. Anyone know whats up? Mandrake 10 OE / Mozilla 1.7 / Flashplayer 7 It has occured in the past on MDK 9.2 / Mozilla 1.6 / Flashplayer 6.

Remember this little monitoring utility? I'm aware it installs from the Mandrake CD's, but where does it install to? It used to be as simple as going into KDE - System - Monitoring - KSIm It was quite a handy tool!
