    Gaim

No...just the first...at least thats all I used...worked fine for me you will probably have to force it...at least I did...not sure exactly what it is...either rpm -Uvh --force *gaim*.rpm or rpm -Uvh -force *gaim*.rpm
  2. I'm not telling my parents...they don't even know that I swear or anything... I've tried that theory with friends...twice...my girlfriend once...didn't work...I think software is my only hope at this point...I think my main problem is: I'm too afraid/nervous to talk to my parents...for obvious reasons...and most of the ppl I know in this town, like, use chew and stuff...no way they'll be of any help...so I've gotta rely on other internet friends...worked for a while...then it failed...tried religion once too...that worked for a while...but in the end, it too failed...and with each failed attempt the next works less...I think software is about my only hope now :-S oh...BTW...I was able to get one of my internet friends to stop once...and yet I myself was unable to...that's sad......
  3. Wasn't going to ask anywhere for this, but can't find any on tucows or google...and I figure none of you really know me...so here it goes: This is probably an odd request and even weirder reason for this forum...but here's what I need: some type of internet 'adult content' filter for linux...and it has to be free...or at least a free trial...here's the reason: for myself...yes...me...and that's why it has to be free...my parent's don't know (so I can't exactly get their credit card and order one :P)...but yea...I've been trying to stop that stuff for...uh...about 2 years now...no sucess...and since I got linux, I know I can get away with it (the rest of my family can only reboot to windoze on this comp) so I'm doing it a lot more now...several times a day...and I'm only 13! I shouldn't be doing this stuff..and I think it'd make my gf happy if I quit...though she says she doesn't care...usually... so...yea...anyone know of any? see, my theory on windoze was delete all other browsers except IE, so I couldn't do it without massive risk of my parents finding out...and by the time I DLed and installed another one, I'd be like 'WTF am I doing???'...but that don't work on Linux...even if they started using it...there are too many other browsers...and I don't know how to remove stuff yet :-P The good thing is, if I install a prog like this on linux...no one will know...if I did that on windoze, they'd see it and wonder why the hell it's there...and that'd be bad...so at least with linux it's just a matter of finding a prog... anyways, any help greatly appriciated...

    GAIM .75

doesn't work for me either...but I've never had it work on 3rd party software...didn't work on GAIM, didnt' work on trillian, rarely even worked on DeadAIM, which is more of a plug-in than a IM client...just get used to the fact that it doesn't work, and get a webhost with a lot of space and a bad system for checking for hotlinked files (like web1000.com or angelfire.com)...that's what I do :-P
  5. I know! get GAIM, and get YIM...mine usually doesn't work...everything else does, but YIM gets to 50% and locks... ! try to wine windows ! then you'll surely be ripping out your hair again :-P
  6. Hey, I first had mandrake on my new comp, and used GNOME and KDE...if I was in root, it locked the screen after a while...and there was a screen lock option in the log out menu...but now that I'm on my old computer, I have to use windowmaker or IceWM...and I'm wondering if there's a way to do something like that here (but not on root...can't get to it)...it gets annoying when someone in my family reboots to go to windoze and leaves it there...I'm waiting for someone to log on AIM or w/e, and I don't even notice until about a half hour later...and I have to leave it shut down for a while after using windoze, or it goes really slow...and it's annoying as hell...so basically, I'm trying to lock everyone else out of this comp :-P anyone know how?

    usb key

hmmm...I have a USB digital camera which I use to transfer stuff to windoze occasionally (If I try to edit my site in linux, it gets really screwed up...I use some weird symbols (something like a cross between {{ and <<) and they show up as a '?' if I edit it in linux :-S)...I don't feel like booting to root to drop it in my windoze folder...so I use my camera...never have any probs with that...
  8. that's cause open office rules :P I don't use it as a replacement for MS word...never used that either...I use it as a replacement for FRONTPAGE! :P I know, that's cheating...but a.) I can't do tables (to hard to get them the right size) and b.) I COULD fix my site in HTML..but it's soo much easier with a prog! :P I love linux :D (wow...I say that too much...50% of the time that's my AIM away message too...I'm addicted!)
  9. Hey! I have the same problem! but I think my thread was forgotten :'-( :-P If I get any time when my brother isn't on the other comp, I'm gonna try my other router...but that's not gonna happen anytime soon...
  10. I have never managed to get a tar.gz to work...haha...I think I figured it out though on my last attempt...but the prog was messed up :-S RPMs are sooo much easier :-P as for the ftp thing...I use gftp too... my ftp server says it doesn't work with all ftp progs and stuff...only gives 4 that'll work...I emailed them about linux...they simply sent back 'We do not support Linux.' ...but by that time I figured it out...I use web1000.com, and though ftp.web1000.com (which ur supposed to type) doesn't work, I found a thing in the FAQ saying that if it ran slow, try ftp1.web1000.com - ftp9.web1000.com ...so I tried one of those and I've had no probs since...
  11. I'm on an old comp and would like to try this too...but I know nothing about linux really...so I too am wondering what this 'Then make an initrd and add to lilo' thing means... :-P Don't ya just hate newbies who want to know everything immediatly? :-P
  12. I don't really know anything about this SCO thing...at all...I suppose I should go search google news...if someone has a good source, and it's not too much trouble, please PM it to me or something...
  13. I think Linux isn't user friendly enough...there isn't a drool-proof version, like windows, and people don't like that...I tried to convert a friend (he's a wanna-be geek, so it wasn't that hard) but within a week he got a pirated copy of windows and was back to that simply because he couldn't install things by double-clicking...that, and he had some windows progs he wanted to use...but he has a win XP, 1 year old laptop...he had linux on a 4 year old desktop...I don't see what we (I'm using almost the same comp...a bit older though) care about games though...our comps are too old for them anyways... I personally am NEVER going back to windows...when I move out, I'm not even going to dual boot...I'm gonna build my comp myself, and save at least $300 by using linux...I'll just get a wineX subscription if I have to...but I don't play games...well...I play games, but I like linux because of that...it comes with games...windows doesn't...I prefer those crappy games...like BZflag, Chromium, Klickety, etc... Gameplay over graphics...and old games have better gameplay...and are easier to get to run on linux, either by emulator or a port... But mainly, I prefer linux because I only use the comp for the net and IM...I'm on it during all my free time, but I just surf the web mostly...and even though this comp is soo old and only has 64MB SDRAM...mandrake 9.2 boots and runs so much faster than windows...and I have cable internet, so I leave AIM on all day...and it really annoyed me when I'd put up an away message when I went to school, and came home to find that my comp crashed and I didn't get any messages...I talk to ppl in many timezones, so I do sometimes get messages when I'm sleeping or at school...but when windows crashes every 6 or 7 hours, it gets very annoying. I've never even had to reboot linux because it was just going slow...linux is the highest form of stress relief :-P
  14. oooh! it has to have 'cat' before '/etc/fstab'! that'd be why it didn't work... :-P here's what it says: /dev/hdb6 / ext2 defaults 1 1 none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom supermount dev=/dev/hdc,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/cdrom2 supermount dev=/dev/scd0,fs=udf:iso9660,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0 none /mnt/floppy supermount dev=/dev/fd0,fs=ext2:vfat,--,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1,sync 0 0 /dev/hda1 /mnt/win_c vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hda5 /mnt/win_d vfat iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850 0 0 /dev/hdb1 /mnt/windows ext3 defaults 1 2 none /proc proc defaults 0 0 /dev/hdb5 swap swap defaults 0 0 none /mnt/removable supermount dev=/dev/sda1,fs=ext2:vfat,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,kudzu 0 0
  15. /etc/fstab is like...messed up...even in root it says permission denied :-S If it was just a folder /mnt/windows, I would assume it was some error because of the dual boot...but it's there on discdrake...on the second drive... hmmm...I was just looking at it a bit on DiskDrake, and it says it's not a fat or other windows partition, but a Journalised FS: ext3
  16. I'm not sure what it is, but it's on my second hard drive...which isn't even recognized by windows...I think I might have put it there during install...not being sure of what I was doing :-P probably thinking since that hard drive was partitioned from an earlier install attempt that it was showing both of my hard drives...but anyways, I know it's no windows data...I was just thinking it might serve some purpose because I was dual-booted...though I didn't think it'd be that big if it was...anyways, how do I get rid of it???
  17. I have a dual-booted windows 98/Mandrake 9.2 comp, and when I installed mandrake on a new hard drive, it put in a windows partition. Do I need this? it is located at /mnt/windows, and appears to contain nothing. The drives for normal windows are /mnt/Win_C and /mnt/win_D...so unless it's some temp thing, it doesn't appear that I'd need it...and it seems to be taking at least 1/3 of my drive...and, if I don't need it, how do I remove it? I would like to expand my swap a bit (though it's already about 500MB :-P) and...I dunno...the rest will probably just become extra root space...but I have no clue how to do this stuff...so any help would be greatly appriciated...
  18. wow...thx :-P I actually just noticed last night as I booted into IceWM instead of WindowMaker for this, and was looking at other progs, that wine has notepad...so I was using that...I woulda posted this then...but it was 10:00...and I still wanted a linux prog...thx
  19. Aight, I need to change the location of 2 pictures for my site...on about 40 pages...I need a prog that's small, simple, and'll just show me the HTML. I don't want it to take 20 minutes to load like openoffice.org writer, and I don't want it to show the actual site and not be able to do HTML like everything I've tried so far...basically, I want a linux version of the windoze prog 'notepad'...nothing extra, no fancy stuff, and ONLY SHOW THE HTML!!! these progs are too good for their own good! my comp is old...until I get more RAM next week it's really slow...I need something small and compact that'll get the job done with none of that extra crap...
  20. ...except you can't...for the old (normal) version, it opens the window, then closes it immediatly...the new (gold) version, it gets to 20%, then freezes [edit] ok...now that I actually read that :-p that's only the gold version...which I'm not using...and yea...it won't work under wine...but you can install it under windows too...it's just to get some files that are compressed or something...
  21. lol...I am dual booted...I just can't stand windoze...lol...only reason I keep it is for: a ) wine progs that wine can't install b ) wine progs I already have on the windoze drive and don't feel like putting on linux c ) I can't set up my mom's email account on evolution, and she doesn't understand linux anyways...all she knows how to do is reboot :-P (I think...) the main reasons I don't go to windoze: a ) SOO FREAKING SLOW! slower than linux...which is really slow on my comp (64MB SDRAM) b ) GAIM RULES! no way I'm going back to trillian...even for just a few minutes! :-P c ) Linux is the greatest thing man has ever created :D
  22. don't work...gives me a 'segmentation fault'...and I'm too lazy to bother trying to figure out what's wrong...anyone else got any ideas? :-p
  23. Michel - AWESOME! :-P Actually, I never tried RA...but if normal C&C wouldn't work (2 versions...even tried the DOS form of both)...I figured RA wouldn't either :-P Gnubie - dosbox????
  24. I'm addicted to linux...lol...I think I need to go to LA (linux anon....not the city :-P)...I wanna play games...but they won't run on wine...all I wanna play is C&C: Red Alert (an RTS from 1996-1997), but it won't work with wine...so...it's either somehow find an emulator that can run it...build a new comp...or look for a self-help book on linux addiction :P So...anyone know where I can get either a windoze emulator for games, money for a new comp, or that book? :P
  25. Anyone got any sites/games for linux that are shareware and/or freeware? See, my comp is old...4 years old...and I prefer old games...strategy shareware games are always great...they have to be...can't make up for gameplay with graphics...anyways...just sorta starting a thread for your favorite shareware/freeware sites and games for linux. I like www.tucows.com ...the linux version of cnet IMHO :-P
