  1. As far as packages I agree to a certain point. This is one place I still miss my Debian install. Finding packages and adding stuff I don't have is easy. I can get around most rpm dependency hangups by just downloading said missing rpm. But this time I can't. I tried to get OOo from 2006 to install into 10.0. No go. First it needs libSLPport. This depends on libstdc++ and then it needs freetype2. It goes fine until freetype2. The one installed with 10.0 is a dependency to too many of my required progs. So I can't remove the older one. And the new one won't install over it. And without it OOo from 2006 won't install. I've read a few posts on the problems with the nvidia and ati drivers in 2006. What I didn't realize is that the xorg libs are experimental. Not the stable branch. This is a major problem for me. I want bleeding edge only to a point. This makes the system unreliable for my main box. And the issues it has with memory/cpu usage are prevalent on my system too. Between these two issues I'm definitely going back to 10.0 tomorrow. I'm going to pull certain files off the 2006 disks as upgrades. But back on the rpms. In one case what you said isn't 100% true. I'm an old holdout for WordPerfect. I still install WP8 into any system I have (linux or windows). And I saved three backwards compat rpms from my old Mandy 7.0 cd (which I still have). I can still install them, even in 2006, and can get WP8 working, and printing fine with one small tweak. But my old xgalaga rpms don't work right so there. But anyway. Looks like 2006 is destined for the storage bin like 10.1.
  2. Well I've given Mandriva 2006 two weeks of good regular-day use. Granted at first I was impressed with the distro I've gotta say now there are some annoyances that make me want to revert to 10.0. I was first glad to see Firefox and Thunderbird included in the distro. I had to use downloaded rpms to get it in 10.0. But I was dismayed to see mozilla dropped. Though Firefox and Thunderbird are my default browser/mail agent, I still keep mozilla around for the web page editor. There is nothing that beats it in linux for wysiwyg editing. Quanta is good for code but Mozilla still tops. But I was also glad to see java runtime included as well as flash. I'm going to pull these rpms off for my revert install. I tried to use Mozilla's rpm from 10.0 but it gave dependency errors that I couldn't fix without trashing the system. I got it working with a tar.gz install but not my favorite. Now one thing I wanted to see I did in 2006. Better management of devices, especially usb. I saw what a mess kde made of usb in 10.1. And was glad to see how 2006 was an improvement. This is one of the few things holding me up from doing a revert. I didn't like how unplugging a usb device with konqueror still open would lock up kde and require a ctrl-shift-backspace to get out. But now I find that KDE hangs if left to timeout. It should just be a simple power setting but I can't find anything that will fix it. This didn't happen in 10.0. And I've tried all mcc power settings and in kde control also. I have an older ATI Rage 128 that has 3d acceleration that works descent with 10.0 out of the box. In 2006 the 3d acceleration is dog slow. I especially notice it in wine. But even chromium is useless in 2006. It worked good in 10.0. I couldn't test with tuxracer. It's gone. In 10.0 it works great. In 2006, if I use one of my old rpms it doesn't work at all. Only resized my screen. I also wasn't keen about how mandriva set default for a kdm theme when one wasn't installed. This kept me from seeing my installed users in the login screen. I had to edit the kdm startup script to fix this. Not what I like. And it might be related to the 3d accel, but memory management seems to have taken a step back. Or there are more things sucking ram. My system can dog down if I have OOo, Firefox, thunderbird and gnucash on at the same time. This I need when working on the family budget. In 10.0 this was handled with no problem. And again another distro goes by with fewer screensavers. I used to love the old pyro. But it's gone. Even the space wind from 10.0 is missing. And the fireworks one only fills half the screen. As far as other programs, All my basics are still there and work fine. Except kscd. It chops off the first two seconds of all songs. But I can use grip to play cd's so I know the cd is fine. I'm not crazy about amorak. I always delete it from the install. And menudrake's performace isn't what it should be this time. Minor tweaks that might be intentional really rub me wrong. If there is a single entry in a menu item, the menu item is deleted and the entry is moved up into the previous menu. Like I put PRBoom in the action menu in games. But when you click on games instead of seeing the action directory next PRBOOM is there by itself. Nothing I can do aside from putting another program in that directory will change that. That might be a feature but I like the old way. And honestly, the way I set up my system, I really don't see much difference from kde in 10.0 and in 2006. Sure the boot up time is faster. But compared to 10.0 it's not a major concern if I revert. a few seconds won't hurt to make sure the system won't lock up if I let it sit. I've put 10.0 back on my backup computer. I'm testing to see if I can get certain programs installed ok. The first is OOo. I really want the new version. But it's proving problematic. I'm going to have to look in to that more. If I can get the new OOo to install 10.0 is definitely going back on the big box. And one personal gripe. My old Doom PRBOOM rpm will load work, gets sound, but the music won't play. Did in 10.0. Now while I can get the programs running fine the system is good, though sometimes it runs slow, And I can setup my faxing as easy as in 10.0. BIG plus. That would have been an instant show stopper there if I couldn't. 2006 was a good distro. And for a new convert it might be fine but for me, who has used Mandy for quite some time, I'll stick with the old tried and true.
  3. I've still got my 10.0 disks, I keep 10.0 on my laptop. And I also purchased 10.1 but dumped it due to the kded usb bug. I tried to load Mozilla from both of them. They both give a dependency error that libnss is not loaded (Network Security Service). So I check and in rpmdrake it is loaded (as Thunderbird requires it). And when I try to load the ones from either the 10.0 or 10.1 disk it says, file already installed. I used to keep files from my old distros (like old compat files from 7.0 so I can keep WordPerfect 8 working) I would just save my old Mozilla files off those cd's but it won't load. And if I remove the libnss file and try to reload it the system will remove thunderbird and Gnomemeeting also. I use Firefox for my browser and Thunderbird for email but I still like to have Mozilla around because it still has the best wysiwyg web page editor I've found. Quanta is fine for hard editing but Mozilla is tops for the (old) composer. Now I'll have to download one or maintain my web pages from my laptop.
  4. Well one of the last glitches I'm working out with 2006. KSCD seems to have a problem with playing cd's. The first couple seconds of any song seem to be cut off. This is for any song, any cd, burned or bought. I've tried a couple other cd players, grip and xmcd, and the music plays fine. I will just keep using grip for now. But this is a problem I'd really like to find a solution to. Any ideas?
  5. Wanted to add a little more. I've had a chance to really dig in and give the new install a good day's run. On the down side, I have a problem with open office saving to one of my old spreadsheets. I think it has to do with the new format. Its for my budget adn it is only run to the end of the year so I won't need it for too much longer. I had the problem with the login screen but fixed that. And it seems the 3d acceleration with my ATI Rage 128 is slower than it was in 10.0. Chromium is dog slow. And now tux racer (saved my rpm from 10.0) doesn't work. But on the up side. (I've got powerpack) I love the choice of programs. Though I do miss mozilla (for the web page editor, going to install the rpm from 10.0 next). But all the little things like j2re, flash, acrobat and a few others are included and don't need to use my downloaded rpms. Boot time is way better. I'm glad I passed on 10.1 and 10.2. The improvements are incredible. However it seems loging out a user seems to lag. I don't have any hardware issues whatso ever. And I like the way mounted and hotplugged devices work better now. I especially like having them in the one "devices" desktop folder. And they don't lock up if something is removed early.
  6. !!!YEESSSSS!!! This needs to be pinned, tacked, highlighted, bookmarked and shown with bright lights!! This is an ANNOYING problem and this easy fix needs to be put somewhere handy. Got my login back to normal.
  7. Yes I've tried this also. And making changes to kdm in the control center don't take affect. I have chosen avatars for all users like before and set to show my users but nothing has changed in the login screen.
  8. I've looked around the new system and done some searches online. I just can't seem to find a way to change the default Mandriva login screen to show users. The default KDE kdm used to show all users with an avatar but the Mandriva login screen only has the prompts for user name and password. I'd like to find a way to get the KDE kdm to work. I've looke in the mcc and any settings I change don't seem to help.
  9. Well I've had a chance to dig into it. 2006 is my new system. It looks nice but I have some minor usability issues. I've imported my old home directory. I got most everything fine. Had to blow away KDE to get the menu to reset right. And I'm not getting Thunderbird to use my old directory. I'm going to have to set that up new and transfer my mails into it. I don't see audacity loaded. Have to see if it's included. Need some kind of sound recorder/editor for transfering songs from my tapes/records to the cd. But the big issue I have is I can't see my logon users. you can type in and logon fine but can't choose users by clicking like in kde 3.2. I've tried changing the login session manager settings but it didn't change. Any ideas? Oh, I first did an update and it didn't go good. Maybe because I didn't test the x on update. But upon bootup after the update was done x was unusable. Even doing startx didn't work. But did a fresh install and all is working good. Now just gotta tweak my settings and get some last things in.
  10. I just got Mdv 2006 Powerpack and loaded it on my back up machine. So far I haven't had any problems. I use the usb for my Lexar card reader and my HP camera. Both worked fine. Actually ;it works better than my 10.0 install. In 10.0 I had the problem that If I had Konqueror open with the usb plugged in and unplugged the usb item before shutting down Konqueror it would lock up Konqueror and/or KDE and requre a ctrl-shift backspace to reset the x. I tested it in 2006. It works better. If I open Konq first and then plug in the card reader it appears in the devices. And If I unplug it the mount icon changes and I can still close konq with no problems. Have to test some of the new features but my quick looks look good. Going to go offline now and load it on the big box. Then the laptop.
  11. Yeah, I have to. Granted, I'm not up on major gaming. I am not into the new stuff. I'm a big Myst fan and Tomb Raider. And I have a pile of old win95 era games I hang onto. And then there's Starcraft. Now I did get Starcraft working in Wine but it was slow. And Myst (original Riven or Exile) won't play due to the quicktime requirement (and no libquicktime will work with it either. Haven't tried Tomb raider. But since I have to dual boot anyhow I just keep it in my small Win98 partition. Then again I have one hurricane tracking program that works well, that is from old Win3.1 days (no there hasn't been anything better to replace it in all this time) That I keep using for many reason. And need my windows boot for it. I have one windows hurricane tracker that works ok in wine but it doesn't convert data too well.
  12. Open Office is doing ok but I read the article on PCLinuxonline and it got me thinking. After all this time we haven't seen much improvement from the old Star Office 5.2. Aside from splittling the programs into individual components there isn't much else. Especially since splitting the programs didn't give us the exceptional performance increase that was anticipated. So has anyone gone back to 5.2? I mean aside from the annoying desktop it worked good. It's been a couple years since I installed it but from what I remember the only tinkering I had to do was setting up the printer. And even that wasn't hard. I've still got my old 5.2 files and was thinking of putting it back in. What y'all think? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  13. Well I've pieced a Toshiba Satellite 4080xcdt. It's working great now I got a good hard drive in it. And Mandrake 10.0 is working fine. It was a toss up between Mandy 10.0 and Debian Woody. But Mandy handled my usb better. But I'm trying to get toshiba utils setup. I found a mandrake rpm online downloaded it but can't find it anywhere on the computer. Only a small doc read me file. No executables. I think it needs the toshiba kernel module but not sure what it's called to modprobe it. Am I on the right track? Anyone else have the toshiba utils working on a Toshiba laptop and how did you get them working. I know they will work because in my test install when I first got the machine working I installed Woody and it includes the toshutils and they worked great, including suspend. As a side note I also had a small annoyance where the sound settings in kmix wouldn't return when I rebooted. As long as I stayed logged in or in that session it was fine but on reboot the settings went back to default which were too low to hear. I ended up installing aumix and now my sound settings stay.
  14. OK One more try. I got my 5-cd set of Mandrake 10.0 last year. From what I can see it recognizes cd's 1-4 as the packages in those cds are listed in my available packages in rpmdrake. Now cd 5 doesn't appear to be there. In the media manager it only shows cd's 1 2 and 3 though the rpms in cd 4 are listed and it does access cd 4 with I install packages on that cd. But cd 5 includes things like Firefox and Thunderbird (older versions but they are there) And they aren't listed in my available packages. Now I've tried to add the cd as a source through the MCC software media manager and with urpmi but it won't add listing an error saying can't access cd because it was already mounted. How can I get around this? Also One thing I miss from Debian is the ability to download upgrades, or software from other sites and it has a utility to take the saved downloaded packages and build an install cd from it. Is it possible in Mandy to use uprmi to download packages with -noclean and then make an install cd of teh packages (new or updates) for use later. I don't want to tax my poor dialup isp connection more than once if I'm going to get all the upgrades or new stuff and want to avoid installing rpm by rpm if possible.
  15. Well I gave up trying Mandrake 10.1 and reinstalled Mandrake 10.0. And what I feared happened. I can't get my fax to work 100%. Specifically adding it as a print option for Openoffice. I am using efax and have Kdeprintfax setup. I have opened one of my previous faxes and had kdeprintfax test send the fax (to my dad's fax) it worked. But I can't remember how to get it to be used as the Sent to Fax print option in the kde printer setup. I know it's just one stupid step but can't figure what it is. When I open KDE's printer setup the Send to Fax is shaded out as if it's unavailable. Also I have a 4 cd set of Mandrake 10.0. But I also have a disc 5 with additional programs. it has RPM6 and RPM7 on it. I was hoping to add this to my sources through MCC Software Media Manager but whenever I try it tells me that it can't access the synthesize.hdlist.cz files (even when I'm looking at them or when I"m not in Konqueror) because the cd was previously mounted. Even if I don't have Konqueror open it says this. I think the supermount (or whatever Mandrake uses now) is blocking this. Should I try it from Icewm? Or what steps can I go through to add another cd source to get around the disk already mounted problem?
  16. Yes, "Kill" as many instances of kded are active. You can do it before or after you plug in the usb device. I recommend before.
  17. You have the infmaous usb problem. It is a glitch in qt3. It causes kded to lockup the desktop. I had this problem with my usb card reader and my camera. Some ahve said doing an online update will fix it. I gave up as I also had other issues. But to get around this you can open up the kde system guard before you use your usb device. Then disable whatever instances of kded you have. This will make it work like normal. But it won't create new icons on your desktop. Acutally I noticed that new icons weren't created, that they were static like in 9.1. I kind of grew accustomed to the new icons appearing in 10.0. I went back to 10.0 for that an other reasons. (My firefox and java kept locking up.
  18. Well I got too fed up. I tried setting up updates but I was having other troubles. One thing that wasn't a problem as far as a glitch. Is that I'm only on a dialup. If I updated it'd take forever. I was hoping that the update would have gotten around the usb glitch. But I was also having network probs. Mostly with my Firefox. I got the rpms from norlug. It works fine in 10.0 but in 10.1 for some reason it kept locking up. Thunderbird was fine. Anyway. I couldn't browse to get info unless I went to Mozilla. But with all the problems I went back and reinstalled 10.0, which was a bugger because my cd3 is buggered. I'm trying to get it redownloaded but I have a 4-cd set and don't think it's the one on the mirrors. That's why I want to know where the 4-cd set comes from and where I can get a copy of cd 3. I'd be satisfied to stay with 10.0 if I can get this cd fixed. I'm satisfied with the performance of my 10.0 install so I guess I'll wait for 2005 le to come out. I'm back in 10.0 now. Almost all back just have to track down a couple rpms I didn't have copies of and reinstall my java runtime.
  19. So I took the plunge. But for the first time I didn't do a clean install. There are things in my mandy 10.0 that aren't included in Mandrake 10.1. Gnome-games isn't there. Linneighborhood. many other things. So I actually tried an update of 10.1 on top of my 10.0 install. From what I can see it went flawlessly....well almost. My firefox is having a problem accessing my bank account. I think a reinstall of Java or resetting my .firefox directory is in order. But again I have the usb problem. I was hoping it wouldn't carry over but it did. So now I'm looking at getting the Mandrake security updates. I see there are some new packages of qt3 for bugs. I don't see specifically the bug on usb but from what I can see from the KDE site it has been fixed. So I'm going to try it. If worse comes to worse I'll hose the system and end up just doing a clean install. As long as my home dir is still intact I don't care. But I have questions. I got my mandrake 10.0 cd's from a seller off Ebay. The version I got was the official download but it inlcudes 5 cds. The official cd set only includes 3. Where do these other cd's come from? When I install I commonly get stuff from this 4th cd. Also, is the 4th cd for Mandrake 10.1 download official available anywhere? Aside form The Club? Is it on a public mirror anywhere. An update to kde 3.4 would do away with the usb problem.
  20. OK, I did a search on KDE site and found this on the bug tracker. It is a glitch with Qt. Here is a snip from one of the bug reports. Apparently Cirrus has made fixes to the Debian Woody packages for KDE 3.2. ------- Additional Comment #8 From Waldo Bastian 2004-02-06 23:00 ------- Created an attachment (id=4548) 0008-loop_of_death.patch Can you check if Qt has 0008-loop_of_death.patch applied? Attached to the bugreport for your convenience. If not, does applying this patch solve the problem? ------- Additional Comment #9 From Cirrus 2004-02-07 09:25 ------- Yes the patch does seem to solve the problem. I haven't done extensive testing, but it all runs smooth so far, so I guess its all ok. I've created packages from the original kde ones with the patch. If anyone wants them, just give me a shout. Cheers for the help. This is in bug 74130. Maybe updated packages for Qt and KDE 3.2 or updating to 3.3 will fix this.
  21. OK I've found something. I opened KDE Service manager. One item is the KDED Mount Watcher. I went into the KDE System Guard and killed both instances of KDED. From what I can see it doesn't hurt performance. But when I did that KDE Service manager says "Unable to contact KDED!" However, now when I plug in the usb device I can access HOME. IT CAME UP!! So the problem is the KDED Mount Watcher. I'm going to do some more searching on how to get around this.
  22. And one more update. I notice that on login, my cpu processes in KDE System Guard is normal. low. But once I plug in the usb device the process goes all the way up to 100%. The user load is over 80%. However, unplugging the device does not bring cpu load down. it remains high. the only clue I can find is when I open konsole and type "kfmclient openProfile filemanagement" (the acutal menu command to open home) I get the response DCOPReply<>: cast to 'QCString' error
  23. One update. I also have Icewm installed. I find that if I log into Icewm, open a terminal and type konqueror it will come up. So it is something in KDE itself. This is a stinker and a show stopper for me. I have grown accustomed to having access to my usb devices without tinkering and without a fix I'm keeping my 10.0 install secure on the main box.
  24. OK I've read a few posts and it seems that many people are having this same problem But I think I can describe it clearly. I have had Mandrake 10.0 installed on 3 machines. It works fine and I have two usb devices I use on them, a Lexar multi card reader with lexar and sandisk compact flash cards and a HP Photosmart 315 digital camera that also uses the cf cards. I can access both no problem. I plug them in, the icon appears on the desktop and I can read/write files on them as user. I did a test install on two machines of my recently purchased Mandrake 10.1 download official, my backup desktop and the laptop's spare hd. Both same result. I can not access Konqueror. That is the only problem. But it's a show stopper. Let me tell you what DOES work. In Konsole I can manually cd to the /mnt directory and access the devices. They are created fine. And even as user I can access the directories and add/remove files. I have installed usbview and it lists the devices as they are, the camera or the card reader. No problem. The problem is bringing up Konqueror. When you click on the HOME icon or in the menu HOME it will show the taskbar entry with the rotating icon showing Starting Home. But nothing happens. The HD light blinks a few times but nothing like when Konqueror starts normal. And even when I unplug either usb device Konqueror is unusable. However, if I log out of my user and log back in Konqueror is usable again. I can access my home dir. But if I plug in the usb devices, again stuck. And even in Konsole. If I type konqueror it does nothing. No error messages. No nothing. It just sits there with no change and doesn't go to the prompt. I end up having to cancel Konqueror. I just tested again and with konsole open I type konqueror and nothing happens and it just sits there. And then if I unplug the usb device while it's waiting konsole will crash with a signal 9. I HAVE added my user to the usb group. And I notice when I plug in the devices while as user, logging out to clear it is a lot slower than normal. Like it is killing a rogue process. However, none of this is a problem as root. I can access the devices from Konqueror no problem. Even as user, opening a konsole and typing kdesu konqueror brings up Konqueror in root mode. No problem. I know it's just permissions, but where? is it on the device? The process? The program? I know many people want this answer I hope this was a good description. (Oh on my install on the backup desktop I hit the menudrake problem also. Menudrake crashed with a segment fault and a core dump. I just did a fresh reinstall, not an upgrade, and it went fine. First install on the laptop was fine)
  25. What I wonder is what are they going to call all their tools? Menudrake? Menu-diva? Diskdrake...Disk-Diva? This sounds too queer. I can just imagine the new icons.
