  1. the only thing interesting about LindowsOS is the click-n-run feature, although I've never used it so I'm not sure how good it is-but the concept seems cool. still not willing to pay $119 for it.
  2. restore disks are not good for just installing the O/S on a section of the original hard drive. restore disks like to just write over the whole darn thing, and make it the way it was originally. your options basically are: 1)get yourself a windows XP install disk, not a restore disk, and start from the top again (i would suggest installing XP on it's partition first, then installing mandrake-avoids the use of a boot-disk to get back into mandrake and set up LILO again). 2)pick one of the two o/s's and stick with that. in most cases, i've found restore disks to be of litte or no use. i prefer installing an O/S from it's install disk, and then just adding in the things i want. restore disks tend to have a lot of extra crap i don't need.
  3. i know :) i'm trying to find a way to get the version of libc.so.6 (apparently it wants glibc 2.3.x) installed, but the dependencies are very odd.
  4. aight, so I want to install blender, but, to do so I need glibc 2.3.1 well, trying to install the newer version of glibc, first attempt looks like this: [root@riesling Downloads]# rpm -ivh glibc* error: failed dependencies: initscripts < 6.91-18mdk conflicts with glibc-2.3.1-6mdk ok, let's try using urpmi and see if it picks up anything. well, it does, sort of..... The following packages have to be removed for others to be upgraded: 3ddesktop-0.2.4-2tex AlephOne-0.12.0-5mdk Guppi-0.40.3-5mdk ImageMagick-5.4.8.3-2mdk Maelstrom-3.0.5-8mdk NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191 NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191.mdk90up OpenOffice.org-1.0.1-9mdk <snip-there are a LOT more, but you get the point> do you agree ? (Y/n) n yeah, i wasn't about to uninstall all that crap. and xfree86 is in there somewhere too. so, i think, why not try to upgrade it? nope... [root@riesling Downloads]# rpm -Uvh glibc* error: failed dependencies: initscripts < 6.91-18mdk conflicts with glibc-2.3.1-6mdk glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk glibc = 2.2.5-16mdk is needed by glibc-devel-2.2.5-16mdk so...i have no idea what to try next. i don't want to uninstall all that crap, i'm worried specifically about the initscripts dependency, afraid I'll break something. anyone have any ideas or know a way to get blender working? thanks!
  5. yes and no. recompiling the kernel for your specific system will optimize it, but really, it works fine w/o doing that. i have yet to venture into the realm of kernel recompilation.....but...i'm considering it.

    Waimea 4.0

go here: http://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distribut...drake/9.0/rpms/ (this is a good source for a lot of RPMs that are hard to find sometimes) download the XFT rpms (regular and devel-i always get both, because i may need them later) and also the fontconfig rpms. those are what you're missing, then try to re-install the RPM. FYI: when you run into dependencies like that, try going to rpmfind.net and doing a search for the missing files. it will usually turn up the RPM you need, or atleast give you an idea if no mandrake RPMs are found.

    Waimea 4.0

what errors do you get when you try to compile? post the exact errors, you might just need a few rpms. or, if you want to concentrate on the RPMs, what errors do you get when you try to install the RPM? most likely, if the cooker RPM doesn't work, you won't find one that will. my guess is you're missing some dependencies. i've both compiled waimea and installed it from the RPM on my 9.0 system, so, whatever problems you may run into, I probably already did :).

    SlicKer

if KDE looked like this, i might actually consider using it. maybe.
  9. i need to make room for another partition so i can try this out :)
  10. if it's just the pager, that'd be great. i'll pm you my email
  11. cross over plug-in works decently in same cases. on codeweavers site there is a page describing all the pluses and minuses of their program, what does and doesn't work well. atleast, there used to be. surprisingly, they are actually honest about their software (atleast, as far as i could tell)
  12. that's cool. i have a couple directories i always jump back and forth between, this will be very helpful :)

    SnackAmp2.1

instead of ./configure, did you do a "make"? and if so, what sort of errors did it spit out? if any?
  14. if 9.1 makes it out, i'm buying it from their website. and joining mandrakeclub when i get my big paycheck tomorrow. it's the least i can do.
  15. how are these 3 games? i picked up a PS)ne the other day ($50, not bad!), and the only game i got at the time was "Driver"
  16. i set that one up in under 24 hours. worked on it, maybe, 2 or so hours total. i reformat, but i keep my home directory :) and most of my themes settings and what not are in my home directory.
  17. icons are marble or crystal (don't remember which), www.kde-look.org. yes, fensdesk. the style file when you unzip it is Fenrise

    lost my hdb

are you using MDK9.0 or an earlier version?
  19. got wampager from sourceforge (since the waimea.org link doesn't work) tried to compile, the this error: wampager.c: In function `main': wampager.c:302: warning: implicit declaration of function `strcmp' i used to know what that meant, but, i can't remember now..... :-/
  20. finally settled with a setup for waimea. check it out: http://www.tymecc.net/screenshot.png that's naim in the upper left corner. for some reason i like using it, versus gaim (that gaim icon on my desktop is actually for naim-i need to make a naim icon). and i'm sure you can figure out what the rest is. the theme i use is Fenrise, you can get it at waimea.org

  22. i think openoffice can open them, but i could be wrong http://www.openoffice.org
  23. i already installed waimea from source....ah well, we'll see if this screws it up hehe
  24. was going to get the pager, but keep getting an "insuffecient permissions" error.
