  1. Can someone tell me how to control which users can run "reboot" or "halt"? I'm running an SSH server and don't want them to be able to shut it down! But I would like my non-admin account to still be allowed to reboot or halt... so it's only certain users I want to restrict access for... The same goes for the "shutdown -r 0" or "shutdown -h 0" and any other way of doing it... Thanks in advance! static
  2. You should be OK - you'll just have to make sure people point their ssh clients to your_server.no-ip.com:666 Post your results!
  3. Cool thanks! I didn't know that was there - will try when I get home! ... cool
  4. Hmm.. thanks, but no luck unfortunately. I'm looking to make it so that the permissions of files that will be put there are automatically 775, this just changed the files that are already there.
  5. Gracias, hablo un pocito de español!
  6. This is going to sound funny, but I had a very silmilar problem at work. What I did to fix it is really screwy (in terms of why it actually fixed the problem) and although I still don't get how it worked, here's what I did... Try swapping the cables going from the KVM to the computer for mouse and keyboard. Remember to swap them at both ends so that technically, the mouse PS/2 port on your PC is still connected to the mouse hole on the KVM, just using the keyboard cable, and vice-versa (use the mouse cable to go from the k/b ps2 to the k/b port on the KVM). Coming from an electrician father and a good many courses in computer electronics, this makes no sense because a cable is just a cable, and theoretically you aren't really making a change by doing this, but it worked for me! Someone at work said it had something to do with voltages, but that doesn't make any sense as far as I'm concerned... Good luck! [edit] I see you aren't using any PS/2... Sorry! I should have looked at that before posting. At least if anyone gets the same problem I had with my Avocent Switchview KVM the solution will be posted...
  7. Hi guys! I just got my server all setup using 10.1 (and besides a pesky mouse-sometimes-doesn't-work-at-bootup problem, everything's great). I just had a quick question regarding mount points... I use a harddrive for the system with the regular /var, /home, and so on partitions, then I have a 160GB HD mounted as /public. It's using reiser as the filesystem and this is where I'd like all my users to upload their files via sftp. How can I change the default permissions so that anything that gets uploaded by any user is -rwxrwxr-x instead of -rwx------ ? I tried adding umask=002 to my options for that mount point in /etc/fstab, but then it wouldn't mount it at all on boot... saying "Bad option.." or some such nonsense. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!! The relevent /etc/fstab line: /dev/hdc1 /public reiserfs user, notail 1 2
  8. Hi guys! Long time no see. I feel bad for not having been around more in the last 9 months, life's been hectic moving out on my own, new job, Doom 3, etc. I'll be around a lot more if this problem gets solved because if not I can't get to this board!! I bought an AMD FX-51 and the Asus SK8N mobo to go with it - months of waiting later and finally I have SATA, linux RAID, etc running, except my NIC won't work. I just want to finally ditch windows for good, as was my plan for SO long. I'm out of ideas. I'm sure it would work if my whole network was gigabit ethernet, but only this onboard NIC is (It's the nforce 10/100/1000). I'm sure the problem lies therein. I get a link light, but I can't ping to save me yarbles. Anyone have any ideas?? It may be worth popping in a PCI 10/100 NIC and getting it over with... I tried DHCP and static IP's too, and I tried to use ifconfig to change the TXQUEUELEN from 1000 to 100 to no avail. Please help! TIA static
  9. Is it SATA RAID? They're still working on that...
  10. static

    SATA RAID

I think the thanks that is in order is for the comprehesive how to above!

    SATA RAID

The only thing is; A problem arises when you don't have an IDE drive to work with!
  12. That's cool! Smart shopping... I could only find APC brand ups's around.. I figured having one is better than not due to my crappy electrical brownouts, etc. Even without the software I protected vs that anyway, I can shut 'er down m'self 'nyway! lol Let us know how the software turns out man!
  13. If you guys are talking about browsing speed as in actually on the net and not browser startup times, I know what the problem is - 10.0 is resetting your DNS setting in MCC to 127.0.0.1 (loopback, a.k.a. yourself when it should be whatever you ISP told you. It means it works but S_L_O_W). If someone has the ability to tell mandrake this please do.
  14. I did an actual benchmark (I forget how now but you need a demo recorded and you type something like timestamp 1 at the console) <shrug> Anyway - I DEFINATELY remember the results! Hardware: P3 - 733 (133 FSB) 512MB RAM 133 Asus CUSL2 mobo w/ 133 FSB Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO (equiv. to the 7200 series radeon) SB Live! value w/ Altec Lansing 4.1 analog surround speakers Windows XP pro = 77FPS avg. Linux Mandrake 9.1 - 86FPS avg. That's considerably better for the pulsing sweet action of quake 3! Looking so forward to doing a similar benchmark with Doom 3 on my new Athlon 64 FX-51 with a gig of RAM and the GeForce FX-5950 ultra 256MB vidcard!!! (Got XP 64-bit for Star Wars: Galaxies and Mandrake 10 AMD64 for Doom 3... so I'll be able to run a benchmark) Cheers! And Happy Linux Gaming!

    SATA RAID

Please reference this thread - not sure if it should be in installation so I thought I'd bring it up in hardware where I tried to find it... SATA RAID - any luck with mandrake 10? I still have an untouched new PC!
  16. I'm having similar trouble finding any info. I just bought the AMD Athlon FX-51 (64-bit) with an Asus SK8N mobo with Promise SATA RAID on-board... No idea what to do now! I bought 2 seagate 80GB sata drives and they're still blank because I'm stumped... The mandrake page mentions they can do sata, and they can do raid, but not sata raid... Huh? Can't ya just... put the two together? I read somewhere also that if you get sata working you can use linux software raid rather than hardware raid (which the author implied was better anyway :) ) but I don't know how to do that yet either. I'm afraid to even try to install the OS until someone can assure me I won't bomb something... TIA for any clues for SATA RAID with mandrake 10!
  17. Yeah - I'd love to see that! I've wanted to put all the download cd's onto one dvd for some time! COOL!
  18. So the APC ups's work in mandrake? Will mandrake see it like a laptop battery on installation or did you have to install that controller yourself?
  19. Iggy does rule. The point was basically that I'm simply NOT used to everything always working. It is nice, and the point, but at the same time: it feels kinda... I dunno, wrong... maybe just different. Don't get me wrong - I'm not looking to break something! I just almost don't quite understand why it all works!
  20. No fun, my babe; no fun --Iggy Pop Linux is really starting to bore me. I went and opened up mandrake update today. Not much to update. Nothing's crashed in a while. I haven't needed to reboot or troubleshoot - let alone re-install anything. All the tasks I ever did in windows (use kazaa, surf, do word processing, play games, chat) are all working perfectly and haven't needed anything by way of fixing or tweaking. I haven't cracked a 'ware in too long. Now what?? I'm bored! It's like: turn on the computer; use it (everything works); turn it off. Why even my hair is growing back in those spots I'd pulled it out - so now I'm even starting to look normal again too. Sheesh. B-o-r-ing!
  21. I have also noticed improvements in booting especially, but definately in quake 3, UT, and the speed with which apps open after clicking 'em.
  22. Startup scripts?? This is really straying from Newbie-friendly... I didn't do any more than as per my first post! (ATI Radeon mind you..)
  23. Well, it's comforting to know it wasn't the OS that went down... ;)
  24. As long as you use fluxbox and cut out as much uneeded crap (like services running, etc) as possible I think you'd be alright... with an older version of mandrake if not a newer one I bet.
  25. Yeah - I wrote the above steps because I know they work. (Just being cautious.) aRTee's right - nVidia drivers would need to be installed if you upgrade; but it'd be worth it!
