  1. Well my experience at first was not a good one. At first things looked so bad that I actually threw my install cd into the trash. I later retrieved it and after installing the upgrades and updating my menus to get back all the things that disappeared I find myself loving it. I just think that these problems may turn off alot of people who may be trying linux for the first time, so I wish they would have remade the isos with all the fixes, but oh well.
  2. I'm sure, I updated my menus and everything, and as I said I was able to install it when I manually searched on the cd for it. B)
  3. That's right, but that package didn't show up in the list. I looked in the rpm folder on my first install cd and it was there though, so now I am fine. but I just don't understand why urpmi wouldn't fetch it for me.
  4. If I use urpmi I find a bunch of packages with xmms in the title, but which one do I choose? I tried some of them but none of them will install.
  5. Umm, my konsole seems to be missing.
  6. http://www.impi.org.za/ This sounds quite good. I hope it offers 100% debian compatibility, then it would be great. B)
  7. But these are the old buggy ones which will destroy your cdrom drive.
  8. Well, maybe not free as in free speach, but free as in free beer. Which makes it different than Lindows, libranet, xandros, etc. It will be different than debian in the sense that it will allow unfree software, but it will still be free in that it costs nothing. Or at least this is how I see it.
  9. http://www.wired.com/news/infostructure/0,...tw=wn_tophead_2 This is basically a debian based distro that will be designed for desktop and home users. Like Debian it will be free (in all aspects). This is actually something I dreamed would come along for quite awhile. B)

    Splitting Files

I did find out that it is possible to use the demo version of winzip under winex, and that does the job just fine. B) It would be nice if there were a linux native app that did this, or if it could be done with GZ files. I did try Ark, Gnochive, and Karchiver and none of them seem to do the job. Maybe I just didn't know what to do.
  11. Is it possible to split files that are too large to fit on a single cd or floppy?
  12. Umm, guys I have a closely related problem. I am using 9.1 and I upgraded K3B to the texstar 0.10 version using urpmi, but now it won't start at all. Any help would be appreciated.
  13. I guess it will be more volunteer based like Debian...
  14. Here is one, but since Fedora was released so recently it doesn't have every package yet. http://rpm.livna.org/
  15. I have tried both, and I greatly prefer KDE. I find it easier to use, and it seems to have more features. Maybe I am missing the whole picture though. Can any experts on the two desktops offer a brief overview of the advantages and disadvantages of both?

    USB problem

According to what I have read about 9.2, it will have much better USB support, so I would wait and try 9.2 and see if it works in that.
  17. So has anyone tried this and can offer an opinion?
  18. http://fedora.redhat.com/ I'm not sure if I should try this, or if I should wait for MDK 9.2. Oh, wait... I'll do both. B)
  19. As I understand it BSD has great Linux emulating capabilities, so I guess anything you can run on Linux should run on BSD.
  20. Yeah, most people do overlook and don't even know other OSes exist. Actually, I heard of FreeBSD before Linux if you can believe it, though I haven't tried it.... yet. Be sure to share your experience with the BSDs when you try them out. I'd like to know how it goes. :)
  21. I very rarely see much discussion on any of the BSDs. Has anyone here tried them? Iam a bit curious about them and may play around with them one of these days, though I doubt I'd get very far with my limited experience, but oh well.
  22. That was me. The thread just disappeared, along with one I created wishing everyone a happy halloween. :o
  23. With so many negative comments about this new release, I think it would be nice to hear of some positive things. I would like to know that my waiting for the free download is not in vain. :D
  24. Gaim is the only IM client I have tried on Linux, so I can't really tell you it is the best. But let's just say I never had a reason to try any other. ;)
