  1. Try this: Mount the CD under the console and then go back to whatever graphics interfaceyou are using and see if it plays the cd. In theory, once mounted, the CDROM should work normally. Counterspy.
  2. Same for me. It wants name and password for root only. Counterspy.
  3. I would boot the Install Disk #1 in Windows and use Ultraedit to look at each file until you find it. If Ultraedit doesn't find it then it may be graphic enough not to show up in that editor. Then go through the files with a graphic editor. Eventually you will find it. I would bet on Ultraedit as the winner. I haven't found a Linux competitor for Ultraedit but that is from the lack of looking. There may well be one that matches its capabilities. Counterspy.
  4. I don't see it quite that way. There is enough momentum being generated now for people to take a look at Linux desktop machines. Once they take a look, they are sensitized to the fact of an alternative to Windows. The problem is with the distro manufacturers who seem to enjoy participating in a "War of the Business Models", the only problem being that none of them will ever reach the level of being taught as successful at the Harvard Business School. Most of the executives need the equivalent of a Grade 11 business course and most won't get it. IBM and HP do know how to run a business and when they think the time is right for the desktop, they'll be there. And they hate Microsoft with a passion, but not a passion that affects their bottom line. And don't forget, one of these days we'll be hearing "Here comes the judge". Counterspy.
  5. How much of a problem was created if any? I would like to expand my IDE ports, but I have read such dismal reports in the newsgroup, I held back. Counterspy.
  6. Try this: 1) From the console type: mount /mnt/cdrom 2) Then exit console 3) Can you access your complete CD? Tell us the results. Counterspy.
  7. You should not have to reinstall. There is a program for converting ext2 to ext3 in place, but like all good ideas, I can't remember the name of it. Someone else may see this and save us both. Counterspy.
  8. If you are using Mandrake 9.0, there is a Quick Start Server Manual on your Desktop under Documentation->Mandrake. You might also want to look at the one for 8.2 which you can download from here: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fdoc.php3 . These will help you narrow down any questions you may have for someone already running a server. Counterspy.
  9. If you are running 9.0, see if there is a Server manual on your desktop under documentation. If you can't find it, or if you are running 8.2, then get it here: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fdoc.php3 . You should be able to find a Mandrake solution for your requirements. Counterspy.
  10. It will be in the 9.0 mirrors. Choose RPMS instead of ISO's. Counterspy.
  11. Both of these are coming up 404. Here are some others: http://www.linux-sxs.org/iptables/iptables...s-tutorial.html http://www.linuxsecurity.com/resource_file...ables-Tutorial/ (Variety of formats) http://www.linuxvoodoo.com/howto/iptables/index.html (only one long page, has translations) Counterspy
  12. I have not seen anywhere where the Promise card works even just for extending the number of IDE ports with Mandrake. Since you want Raid 0, I would suggest you use software Raid and disable the card. The other solution is to use Redhat instead of Mandrake. Counterspy.
  13. With the abandonment of InteractiveBastille and the introduction of Shorewall in 9.0, at last there is a tutorial for IP Tables which can be found here: http://people.unix-fu.org/andreasson/iptab...s-tutorial.html. Counterspy.
  14. Guarddog and Firestarter are in the contribs section of the mirror you used to download 9.0. Another one to consider is FWBuilder. All of these require IPtables to be installed. It's on Install CD1. Counterspy.
  15. If you look on this page: http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fdoc.php3 , you can get a server manual which will go a long way to answering these questions. There are little boxes for selection of the particular manual you are looking for. You might also get the Reference Manual while you're there. Counterspy
  16. You do face a major decision about that Install CD. There is, as you probably already know, a hidden partiton for restoring Windows. As you have rightly concluded, reformatting the drive will erase that partition. I'm not sure whether this will work, but if you can get a hold of Partition Magic (or Rescue disks), preferably version 8.0, you may be able to make that partition visible and use Norton Ghost to archive it somewhere, including floppies and CD's. The biggest problem is with any proprietary drivers as well as the particular version of Windows. You may have either floppies or CD Roms soming out the wazoo so making friends with your local computer store people may also give you a way out. Counterspy.
  17. Try the two newsgroups mentioned in the preceding message. Counterspy.
  18. I suggest that the person with the card takes a look at the manufacturer's site. There are people who have reported that it works but if there is no information on the manufacturer's site, it probably calls for Google and Google Groups. I would look in the newsgroup comp.os.linux.hardware as well as alt.os.linux.mandrake. Counterspy.
  19. Did you choose the partitioning or did you leave Mandrake to do it? I suggest you install in expert mode to give you control of the partitioning. At the very least you need a "/" root partition, a "/swap" partition (about 400-500 Mb) and a "/home" partition to save you from having to configure your options on every upgrade or install. See the Partitioning mini-How-to at htpp://www.tldp.org for size recommendations and the Partitioning section at http://www.mandrakeuser.org. Counterspy
  20. One of the sources of these differences is the fact that Mandrake does not have 2000 machine configurations like M$. I am not even sure they match Redhat. This is the only way you get a relatively bug free release although as has been well stated before in this thread even M$ has problems. Counterspy.
  21. Have you looked here: http://www.phpbbhacks.com/hackslist.php or here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpbbmodsandup/ . Counterspy.
  22. If you are running 9.0, chkrootkit is on your install disks. You can install it and run it to see if you have been compromised. If you are not running 9.0, you can find it using Google. If it shows or if you are sure you've been compromised, then go to the manufacturer's site for your hard drive and look for a utility that will reformat your hard drive. I have Maxtor drives and the name of the utility is Maxblast. IBM has several different ones and I am sure Western Digital and Seagate are similar. Do not run a generic formatter such Gibson's Spinwrite as it hasnot been updated for larger hard drives and falls into the category of what i would call obsolete. You also should consider the possibility of component failure somewhere in your system if formatting does not do the job for you. Counterspy.
