  1. Another thought, it can be really useful to have some kind of backup program installed, in case anything happens to hose up your system. I'm relatively new to linux, and have royally stuffed it up several times now. Sometimes the easiest way has been to restore to an earlier time, leaving your home partition alone (if you don't have a seperate home partition, it's a great idea to change that.). I can recommend Mondo, which is in the repositories. I've never tried rsnapshot, but that another similar program which looks really good. Sorry that none of this will help you now, but it might save you hassles in the future. Good luck.
  2. Lots in the logs, I just don't understand much...seems to be working to recieve calls now, I'll check that site. Thanks.
  3. You golks are great, thanks heaps. I've tried x-lite, no luck. Where do I find the log files? Thanks.
  4. Thanks mate, appreciate it. Hopefully someone else will have more info for me. Cheers! ~Mitchell
  5. Just a bump...anyone able to help?
  6. Hi people, does anyone know why the kde bootsplash theme goes white, with the penguins in blue boxes on a white screen, on logging into an account? Am assuming this is some startup error, or some bug, as something problematic occurs with all the themes. Redmond (ick) is the best... anyone know what to do? Thanks. 7. Hi folks, here's the dilemms; was using a voip service with xlite softphone very successfully before I switched to linux, now I can't use ANY voip service at all. Tried several phones, from ekiga to idefsk to twinkle and a linux version of xlite. All end up with the same problems, server times out and I can't make, or receive calls. Gave up after awhile using 2001.1, and have just been trying again with 2008.0. For 10 blessed minutes I was able to make calls to my mobile, then the timeout failed. At first (using twinke) I could restart my computer, open twincle, be asked for a password and user settings to my account, then be able to make calls for another few minutes...before it dropped out an I was getting the 'server reques timeout' message. Tried xlite again, looged in briefly, couldn't make any calls, then won't log in again. What gives? Tried disabling my firewall, opening ports tcp/udp: 5060, setting my security level to poor in the MCC, nothing will work. Even uninstalled twinkle, erased the .twinkle folder under my user home to get rid of any settings, then reinstalled. Still no luck. What am I doing wrong. I've no intention of going back to windows just for this...but it was so bloody easy... Any and all help is appreciated. ~Mitchell
  8. Hi folks, thought I should post this up in case others run into it, though it's mostly solved for me. Last night my computer hung itself badly when I tried to print some colour A4 pages I had created with Openoffice.org. It had happened the previous night, but I had killed my current session, and restarted my box. Everything appeared fine, so I powered off and went to bed, printing unfinished. Then last night all hell broke loose... tried to print the same files, and my CPU was being eaten by some mystery process I couldn't find. I tried to find it through ksysguard, but there was nothing abnormal, certainly nothing to make my box run so slowly. It took several minutes at one point to open a new window... Tried killing the session, tried everything I could, then finally bit the bullet, rebooted, and restored via Mondo to an earlier time. (bless that program, I'm so glad I created a backup when everything was still working) Took about 20 minutes, and everything was fine again. Then had a think, and uninstalled my printer, an Epson Stylus Photo R210. As I was reinstalling, I realized that initially I had set it up using both printer drake, which conveniently sprang up upon first connecting it up, and the kde setup wizard. (kserver or something?) I think this was the problem. I configured it this time through the kde program, and left printer drake alone. That seemed to solve it for me. Now my only issue is the bloody colours... I think my printer itself needs a service, and it's very likely I stuffed up when refilling the ink cartridges not long ago... Not a major hassle, very little magenta colour, and everything is not printing the way it should, but alright for the most part. The exception is this brochure I'm designing, I can't get the printout on one of the pages to look any good, the colours are very bad. Have tried lots of settings, and will keep trying more. I'm hoping to print out another 50 or so this morning...lol. Get there in the end. Hope this helps anyone with 2008.0 printer troubles. ;)
  9. Yeah, all that above is correct, and probably then some. An easy way to deal with this, apart from avoiding it to begin with, is to write yourself a little script, then copy it into /usr/local/sbin/ Mine looks like this: #!/bin/bash cd /var/lib/urpmi rm -f .LOCK rm -f .RPMLOCK echo "Happy Urpmying!" ------------------- This removes the files which lock your database, temporarily. It will still get locked the next time, and time after that, but if you happen to make a mistake this script will unlock it. Open kwrite as root (or gedit if you're using gnome), paste in this script, then save it under /usr/local/sbin/ as urp.ul (or whatever command you want to give it.) Next (also as root) you need to give it permissions. Type: chmod 744 /usr/local/sbin/urp.ul This will make it readable to everyone, but only executable to root (pointless for anyone else to execute it). Good luck. I find this script has made my urpmying much less painless.
  10. Are you using gnome or kde? I'm using kde with 2008.0, and no problems there. Log out shows end current session, reboot computer, and shutdown.
  11. To add to fifi, I'd recommend installing a program called 'Mondo' from the repositories, and use it to make a backup of your system. It can restore your machine from bare metal, as well as parts of it. That way if the installation stuffs up, or if your like me you manage to crash your computer somewhere in there, you at least have something you can restore to that totally works, then figure out how to try the update again. Good luck.
  12. Thanks Arctic, I did try that again, to no availe. Just finished a clean install of 2008.0, and couldn't be happier. Everything's working fine now, and as I did a netinstall, only used 2G, maybe less. Sooooooo relieved and happy. Thanks people! ~MItchell
  13. Hmmm...yes, for the record, I don't recommend going through cooker... Did that the beginning of the week, hours before 2008.0 was released officially, and found a few bugs...mainly in the upgrade install to the official 2008.0 version. All my permissions were stuffed, and I couldn't log into anything except root through startx -- :1. Just finished a netinstall now, a clean install, and couldnt be happier. Minimal bugs fixed, and it took no more than 2G of download... Sooooo happy. Probably the cooker has changed now, and you can get the official stable version....lol. Anyway, will definitely use netinstall after this!
  14. Hi Folks, urgent help required. Just did an ftp upgrade install from a cooker version of 2008.0 to the official release of 2008.0, and now I can't log in to any of my accounts, save root by running startx -- :1 in the virtual terminal. Trying to log into my main account from the login screen I get the error message 'cannot start kdeconfig' What can I do? I set the user id's correctly at the time of upgrade, and can't log in. Was initiall told that perhaps my tmp directory was too full, so cleared it from both root and /home/mitchell (my home directory), is case it was too full after the upgrade. Now the error message has changed to 'Cannot start kdeconfig. I looked at the permissions in my home folder, and found they were sett to rwx------ root:root. Thought that might be the problem, so set them to: rwxrwx--- mitchell:curiouscats. (curiouscats was the group set before, checked in usedrake, it still is there) No change. Anyone have any clues? This is my business computer, and I'm at a total loss if I can't log in by this morning. Thanks everyone! ~Mitchell
  15. Mmmm. You'll probably get sick of my posts, but I can't speak highly enough of this distro.. Really, really, impressed. THanks again. ~Mitchell
  16. HI, firstly, I'm using a cooker version from around Monday, before the official release hit the mirrors, and haven't upgraded to the official version yet, so this may be due to that. I've found that fonts on my box haven't been able to install from the built in font installer (very neat software, though doesn't seem to work...) found Papyrus font on the internet for free, and in the end had to copy it to /usr/share/fonts, then change the permissions to 755. Workds fine now. Also, as I bought a legal version of MS Windows XP some years ago, I've simply installed all the fonts from there... I've Windows running in Virtual Box. May as well get my money's worth... Anyway, not a major problem, and might be due again to Cooker, just thought I'd mention it.
  17. Thanks John...I'm just starting to find some of those little nigglies...irritating... I'l sort an upgrade later on tonight. Cheers. ~Mitchell
  18. So far I'm so happy with 2008! I installed through cooker just a few days ago, and have been playing with it since. Awesome job guys! My only real complaint is with updating through the mirrors. I changed the sources as soon as I could from cooker, and now have them pointing to ftp://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrakelinux...0/i586/media/... for the main releases and ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/...driva/2008.0/... for PLF packages. I had to do this through easyurpmi.zarb however, as the 'Configure Media' tab wouldn't work for me. Any ideas why? Just kept saying it couldn't find any media... was wondering if this was a problem due to cooker. Also, now when I try to add media through 'Configure Media', (have been playing around with a few different mirrors), the distribution sources work fine, but if I click on official I get an error message saying there doesn't appear to be any media, and this might be a problem with my architecture... Any thoughts on this? Last question, is there any reason to update from cooker to the official release, and if so can I do it with an upgrade rather than a reinstall.(have been using ftp to install, so much easier) I upgraded to 2008 from 2007.1 with a clean install, barring my home partition. Thanks for you help, and 2008.0 is really cool! :D
  19. Lol! Was impatient, installed from cooker last night. 2008.0 is AWESOME. Really enjoying this. Just changing over my sources to 2008.0 from cooker now. Thanks for the tip off! ~Mitchell
  20. Thanks Adam, am updating them now. :D
  21. Thanks matey, much appreciated. I'm impatient, amongst other things...lol. If I get a chance I'll install it over the next day or so, then switch my sources when 2008.0 official comes out. I'm really keen to see if Free actually will work on my machine, and what I have to do to configure it properly with additional drivers, etc. Have been using 2007.1 Live up until now. Thanks again.
  22. Good luck Nexus, unsure what else to try.
  23. aRTee, you said that if you install from cooker with a network/ftp install you get 2008.0, are there any other ways? Have been looking for something resembling an iso through cooker, and everything is still RC2. Also, what are the early seeders? Am feeling out of my league here... just impatient for the 2008.0 release. Have a couple of projects I'm hoping fixes in 2008 will make easier, and like everyone else feel I have a legitimate reason for jumping the que....lol. Also, I'm in Australia. Can anyone recommend a mirror site that works at a high speed? Have adsl2, with around 7,000mbps and the aussie mirrors from easy urpmi suck. Often the packages downloaded from there aren't complete, and there isn't anything closer from the official repositories. Have been using the coffee mirrors from France, which seem very slow. Anyone have any suggestions? Aussie John mentioned the telstra bigpond mirrors in another post, at least for downloading release iso's, but haven't been able to find them to use... Thanks people.
  24. Hi Nexus, I haven't tried KDE4, but recently I installed the kde base files alongside an existing Gnome system. Initially I got the same error message when I tried to start KDE, although Gnome still worked fine. Found out that the default KDE installation (and perhaps any desktop manager being installed alongside an already existing system) is for root, which is why I was unable to log in. Try giving your .kde folder user permissions. It should be at /home/"user"/.kde I used chmod 777 -Rv /home/mitchell/.kde and was then able to log in fine. I think 777 was overkill for permissions, bearing in mind you're only giving them to the users local .kde folder. 700 would likely be better. Good luck, and let us know how it works! ~Mitchell
