The files in sane-backends-iscan (the epkowa open source "drivers") are needed only for those Epson scanners that they support. They are not needed by any other devices, such as HP scanners. The open source Epson drivers are packaged separately from other open source drivers (which are in sane-backends) in order to avoid the conflicts that you saw when you tried installing the avasys drivers originally. Uninstall sane-backends-iscan, and then install the avasys packages. The sane-backends-iscan package contains sane open source Epson drivers, which are not needed when you use the avasys drivers. Jim

You need to enable the non-free sources. These are disabled by default when you install cooker (or 2010.1) using the Free DVD or dual CD. Jim

KDE is not included in the dual iso. In order to install KDE during system installation, you need to add the online distribution sources at the point in the installation that it asks if you want to add additional installation sources. If you have the DVD iso, then the boot.iso is available in the DVD iso. (in /i586/install/images). Just mount the DVD iso and navigate to the appropriate directory. Jim

The kernel-*-devel package is what you need to compile external kernel modules http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Notes#Kernel_changes The packages named such as nvidia-*-kernel-* are not kernels but pre-compiled binary kernel modules. Packages such as dkms-nvidia-* are installed as a backup. They enable the kernel module to be re-built when the kernel is updated but a new binary module is not available. This has happened in the past, but rarely happens now. On past releases kernel-*-devel-latest was not installed by default, which rather defeated the point of installing the dkms packages. I think that this has been fixed in 2010.0, and the kernel-*-devel-latest package is installed whenever the kernel-*-devel package is installed. Jim

The Home icon is configured to launch dolphin. Right-click on the icon, select Properties and take a look at the Application tab. You would need to edit the command in order to launch your preferred file manager instead of dolphin. Jim

If you are running 2009.0, then the setup package was updated. You should have been asked if you wanted to overwrite your fstab (and of course you should have answered "no"). I thought that a change had been made to avoid this from happening, but it seems not. Although I have not (yet) seen any reports of other users being "bitten" by this. Jim

Whether or not a package in /contrib is updated or backported is entirely up to the maintainer. Packages in /main are updated by Mandriva for significant bug fixes and security issues only, not version updates.
