  1. The files in sane-backends-iscan (the epkowa open source "drivers") are needed only for those Epson scanners that they support. They are not needed by any other devices, such as HP scanners. The open source Epson drivers are packaged separately from other open source drivers (which are in sane-backends) in order to avoid the conflicts that you saw when you tried installing the avasys drivers originally. Jim
  2. Uninstall sane-backends-iscan, and then install the avasys packages. The sane-backends-iscan package contains sane open source Epson drivers, which are not needed when you use the avasys drivers. Jim

  4. You need to enable the non-free sources. These are disabled by default when you install cooker (or 2010.1) using the Free DVD or dual CD. Jim
  5. KDE is not included in the dual iso. In order to install KDE during system installation, you need to add the online distribution sources at the point in the installation that it asks if you want to add additional installation sources. If you've already installed using the dual iso, you can install KDE by adding the online sources: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Tools/urpmi#Adding_media_for_a_distribution and then running urpmi task-kde4 If you have installed the LXDE desktop, you can use the Mandriva GUI tools to do this: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Basic_tasks/Installing_and_removing_software Jim
  6. Right-click on the Desktop. If you're using the default Folder View desktop, then select Folder View Settings. If you're using the KDE standard desktop, select Desktop Settings. Jim
  7. Only if you buy the boxed Powerpack (not the "slim pack") http://store.mandriva.com/product_info.php?cPath=149&products_id=479 The manual is no longer sold separately, nor is a pdf version available, so far as I know. Jim
  8. To add a directory to the path, try something like: PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/jdk1.6.0/bin export PATH Jim

  10. The same people have produced a live CD: http://forum.mandriva.com/viewtopic.php?t=125816 Jim
  11. No they should show up as official updates soon. The packages need to be re-built by the sec team for release. Jim
  12. The updates are now assigned to QA: https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=57567 Jim
  13. Mandriva 4.3.5 packages for 2010.0 are currently in the /testing repo and should be available as official updates soon. Jim
  14. Perhaps the BIOS battery is needing to be replaced. Jim

  16. drakconf (MCC) and most of the drakxtools can be run in text mode. Jim
  17. You don't need to burn the boot.iso: http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Docs/Installing_Mandriva_Linux#Booting_the_installer_direct_from_a_hard_disk_-_Linux_method Jim
  18. If you have the DVD iso, then the boot.iso is available in the DVD iso. (in /i586/install/images). Just mount the DVD iso and navigate to the appropriate directory. Jim
  19. The kernel-*-devel package is what you need to compile external kernel modules http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Notes#Kernel_changes The packages named such as nvidia-*-kernel-* are not kernels but pre-compiled binary kernel modules. Packages such as dkms-nvidia-* are installed as a backup. They enable the kernel module to be re-built when the kernel is updated but a new binary module is not available. This has happened in the past, but rarely happens now. On past releases kernel-*-devel-latest was not installed by default, which rather defeated the point of installing the dkms packages. I think that this has been fixed in 2010.0, and the kernel-*-devel-latest package is installed whenever the kernel-*-devel package is installed. Jim
  20. Delete that line and you should see the invitation the next time that mdkonline checks for updates. Jim
  21. Try right-clicking on the icon in ~/Desktop Jim
  22. The Home icon is configured to launch dolphin. Right-click on the icon, select Properties and take a look at the Application tab. You would need to edit the command in order to launch your preferred file manager instead of dolphin. Jim
  23. If you are running 2009.0, then the setup package was updated. You should have been asked if you wanted to overwrite your fstab (and of course you should have answered "no"). I thought that a change had been made to avoid this from happening, but it seems not. Although I have not (yet) seen any reports of other users being "bitten" by this. Jim
  24. Whether or not a package in /contrib is updated or backported is entirely up to the maintainer. Packages in /main are updated by Mandriva for significant bug fixes and security issues only, not version updates. Backports of packages in /main are also discretionary. 2009.0 is still fully supported (for packages in the /main repo): http://www.mandriva.com/en/mandriva-product-lifetime-policy/ Jim
