  1. Well, after re-installing, I followed the exact same steps that I took before to update the kernel (rpm -ivh kernel*.rpm) and it installed flawlessly and without a hiccup. Hmmf?! Go figure. Oh well, I sure hope that LM9.1 is more stable than 9.0. I really don't like this version. I never had any problems with LM8.2. I've also noticed that everytime I re-install 9.0 (yes, I have had to re-install multiple times), it appears to change the configuration somewhat. The same programs are not always re-installed. I don't understand. That's probably another topic though.
  2. Do you have Shorewall running? Shorewall is the firewall that ships with LM9.0. You might have to shut it down in order for you to connect. Also, you may have to set the gateway on the Linux box to that of the server, since it is connected to that. In my network, all machines (Linux, Win2K and MacOS9) are connected to a hub and then to my Linux box (dual NICs), which is the router to a cable modem.
  3. That's funny :? When I installed the kernel the "recommended" way (rpm -ivh kernel-2.4.19.24mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm), it crapped out my whole system and now I can't even boot into any kernel. But from what I have been reading, the Mandrake Update or urpmi method seems to work for most people. I'll have to try that after re-installing.
  4. Does your router have a built-in firewall and if so, are you utilizing it? Maybe, your shorewall config is correct, but your router's firewall is blocking the ports? Did you edit the shorewall files at all? Or did you leave them as is? I have been experiencing the same problems with your uninstall/install issues since I switched to LM9.0. I still have to figure that one out, but I think it has to do with the "security" and "bugfix" updates. They do not seem to be stable enough. Again, another post! I do not stop and start from MCC. I have never liked the firewall feature of MCC. I always do it from the console. Also, if you do it from the console, you can see some output. Type: service shorewall <stop/start/restart> See what you get. If all looks well, I would bet it's your router. Try testing the ports with the router and without and see if there's a difference.
  5. Did you manually edit the files for your situation? In my case, the only file that I really had to edit was the /etc/shorewall/rules file. What problem are you experiencing or do you feel is wrong? I have a few ports marked as Blocked, but most are in Stealth mode. Is that what you feel you should have? What is your output when you run: service shorewall start (or restart)? Is there anything in the output that you feel is not right? Are you on a cable modem, DSL or dial-up? Do you still have the other firewalls installed that may be conflicting with Shorewall or maybe have modified your firewall script or IPTables file? If, I suggest removing all firewall packages and starting with just one and work on that one. You're right, it shouldn't be this difficult. :?
  6. I am using LM9.0. The version of MPlayer that I had rebuilt from source was the MPlayer0.90rc1. Of course, I'm using GCC3.2. The folks at MPlayer do not recommend using GCC2.96. You might want to give PLF's version a try. He has it compiled for LM9.0 and he is at MPlayer0.90rc3. I'll get it going as soon as I feel that my system is stable enough. Overall, I'm not really satisfied with LM9.0, but that's another post.
  7. Oops!! That's www.shorewall.net for the Shorewll website. Sorry about that.
  8. To all who have posted here, Shorewall will not run as desired out of the box. I found this out when I experienced similar problems as posted here. My solution was to go to the Shorewall website, www.shorewall.org, and follow their configuration instructions. Once everything was set up, Shorewall worked perfectly for me and has ever since. From what I understand, Bastille is incompatible with LM9.0. Why? I have no idea, but this is a known issue. However, now that it has support for RedHat 8.0, I'm sure a solution for LM9.0 is around the corner.
  9. Here's the easiest way: In a console, type: cdrecord --scanbus Find out what your CDRW is recognized as (mine is 0,2,0). Then in the console, type: cdrecord -v speed=<speed of burner> dev=<device> <path to ISO image> So, If i wanted to burn a Mandrake CD on my machine, I would change the directory where the ISO is stored and type: cdrecord -v speed=36 dev=0,2,0 MandrakeLinux90.i586.iso Adjust to your situation. Very easy. I have found the GUI apps to be cumbersome and if you don't have the correct permissions, you need to determine what permissions you need.
  10. I "had" it working on my system until I hosed it and had to re-install (deleting my install of MPLayer). Now, I'm waiting until my system stablizes (lots of other issues). Anyhoo, here's a couple things one might forget about (one stupid and one not): Have you tried putting a period in front of WMV for the extension in your file association to see if that matters? Also, did you install the Win32 Codecs and the WMV Codecs before compiling MPlayer, so that MPlayer recognized that you had them and compiled them into the program?
  11. I believe that you can use xpdf. It should have installed by default with LM9.0.
  12. Here is what I have found to happen on my system. I had a similar problem before I really screwed up my system following the same path your currently taking. I re-installed and the problem appeared to go away, however, in following your path, I discovered an update to Mandrake Update (also known as DrakConf). Once I installed that, "my problem" (the one you are headed) went away. Maybe this is why yours did too. Now, when Mandrake Update works correctly, it will not detect every update because the "missing" updates refer to packages that are not installed on your system. For example, there are updates to TeTex, however, because I do not have that package installed on my system, the updates do not show up in my RPMDrake window. Now, I am having another problem. It seems that everytime I try to install a "security update", it really screws up my system (usually it hangs the system and I have to hard boot) and after I try to re-update, it tells me that the files do not match the signature and fails. Then I re-start the process and it re-downloads the files and everything is hunky-dory. I try the next "few" updates (because it is impossible to do all of them at the same time) and I repeat the above process. What a crappy system.
  13. I had built my MPlayer from source and it worked perfect. In order to get Mozilla to recognize it: whenever I clicked on a file that it did not recognize and would ask whether to "Save As or Open With..." ,I would click "Open With..." and browse for the mplayer executable (/usr/bin/mplayer or /usr/local/bin/mplayer), and select it. Then click on Advanced in the "Save As or Open With..." window and create a "Helper Application" entry. This way, mozilla will always recognize the file type and open it appropriately. You can also edit/add entries by selecting Edit > Preferences > Navigator > Helper Applications. The same process can be followed for any file that Mozilla does not recognize by default (i.e. - ASF, MPG, RAM, WMV, DOC, PDF, etc.) Obviously, plugins will assist in recognizing some file types. I'm sure Konqueror has a similar process, but I only use it for file management.
  14. Thanks for the quick response. I agree on that point; I think that's what I did last time. However, there's still the issue with the funny messages after installing certain updates. kdemultimedia happens to be one of them. The message I get is: /sbin/ldconfig: The file <insert filename> does not appear to be an ELF file. It does not have the correct number of magic bytes at the end. What is that supposed to mean?
  15. Well, that's all fine and dandy, but when I tried updating KDE from 3.0.3 to 3.0.5a, it said that kdemultimedia conflicts with TiMidity++, yet they were both installed after a clean install(I had to reinstall after I screwed up my machine bad). Is anybody else having this problem? Also, hwo come updates from Mandrake (supposedly security updates) result in files not being ELF files and that they have the wrong magic bytes. What does that mean and how can that be fixed? I'm downloading my updates from the carroll site, which is supposed to be one of the "official" sites for updates.

    Firewall setup

I believe the firewall gets installed by default. In Mandrake Control Center, click on Security and Firewall. It will set up a basic firewall, but you will have to configure it manually. My advise hear is to go to the shorewall web site and review the docs and follow the examples they have for configuration. I did and everything works beautifully. It took a bit of work, but it works very well.
  17. I had a problem egtting my home network out to the Internet. Then, I visited the shorewall website and they have excellent documentation and info on the website as well as configuration examples that you could use for things such as a two-interface set up which I had (home network on one NIC and Internet on the other NIC). I replaced the files, set up and configured per the website and voila, everything works beautifully. It took a while to figure out the problem, and the wife was ready to kill me, but "if she's happy, then I'm happy" - He,he,he.
  18. I believe the mime-type you are looking for is: application/octet-stream <file name> Replace the "file name" with the file in question. The browser won't know what to do with it and prompt you.
  19. Well, I finally got it installed after about 5 attempts and different combinations of options that were suggested by many different people from several different boards. Here is how I got LM9.0 installed: 1. I disconnected my 2nd CD drive 2. After pressing F1, I typed: linux noapic ide=nodma 3. I chose fewer packages to install and slowly began installing packages that I needed after reboot. I don't know what combination of these allowed it to install, but I thank all of you for your experiences and suggestions. I do know that when I look at the logs, it states that APIC was disabled and that it was re-enabling it, so that may have been insignificant, but I'm glad that I got it installed. Again, I thank all of you who "helped" me!!!
  20. Well, it took a while, but after re-burning new CDs and verifying the MD5SUMs and everything was perfect, when I tried to install, I had the same problem. I did get a lot further than I did in the past, but it still froze while it was installing the packages. I was not viewing the Details as you all suggested and I downloaded the ISOs from current "legal, certified, whatever you want to call it" Mandrake mirrors. I even tried the LINUX DEV=NOAPIC option and that make it stall even sooner. Any other suggestions? I did read to remove the 2nd CD drive. I haven't tried that yet. To be continued........
  21. I agree with both of you that a slower burn makes a better CD burn, but unfortunately, 4x is the max I can burn on my CD burner. It's an older burner, but it works for me. So, I guess I'm going to have to try downloading new images and try it again. I will keep you posted on how it goes. Thanks guys!!
  22. My install freezes all the time while installing the applications. I am able to get thru the initial installation portion, but after, when it is ready to install the applications, it freezes at different points. I have a CompUSA CompPC Home Series and the motherboard, a GVC, is on the hardware list as being supported. I have 192MB RAM, NVidia Riva TNT2 AGP card, 2 HDDs (a 13GB Seagate and a 20GB Maxtor), ATAPI CDRW and a 42x CDROM, floppy, USB Quickcam VC (it is not connected while installing), HP Deskjet 697C, hub, cable modem. This same computer installed LM8.1 without any issues, LM8.2 installed successfully after 3 attempts and now with LM9.0, it just does not want to install. The ISO's I downloaded checked out when I MD5SUMed them.
