  1. if you get this working could you PLEASE post a step by step on how you did it? I have tried for 2 years and have had zero luck. I finally pulled it out and put it in an XP box I designed JUST for my DAW. I use my on board sound on my linux. j
  2. wow, i am SOOOO looking for a valid excuse to upgrade (of course with a 5600X2 and 4GB ram and 1TB HD I dont have a LOT to whine about) but here is a GREAT deal: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...&CatId=2417 SLIGHTLY more than your $100 MB ($139) and you get a dual core, and if I am not mistaken this MB will ALSO support the Quad Core Phenom (check that with AMD's sight 1st) If you want cheaper they have a MB/CPU combo for $89 buts thats an AMD 3600. I have bought THOUSANDS of $$$$ in stuff from TG. They are extremely reliable and fast. One solution however, Linux is MUCH more sensitive to certain inconsistencies, could it be your Power supply instead of your MB? just a suggestion. j
  3. ABout once a year I try SUSE (I get invites from NOVELL to some of their conferences so I get SLES) and there are a LOT of things to love about it. For example they had XEN down COLD 2 years ago. And in a multi server environment it was the BEST. but for the lowly desktop user, I think they miss the mark. I havent seen 11, I just burned 10.3 and havent decded as to whetehr to put it on my test pc.....
  4. I flirted with Xandros for about a year and the ONE thing that I thought was amazing was at how well integrated their OS was abloe to treat NTFS drives. I was able to dual boot, OR just slap in an NTFS drive w/o re formatting and X4 read it right off. looking around I was able to find that X4 was using a proprietary Paragon NTFS driver. Sigh, thats what the $ was for. THEN in my new Linux + (or Format, or Pro) magazine, I get a new cd that says that IT has an open edition version of their NEW driver: I think this may be whats on the CD: http://www.ntfs-linux.com/home/personal/ I havent tried it YET, but then I'm running KDE4 and 2008.1, so I have to look and see if I have NTFS-3g installed. ALthough in the past NTFS-3g seems to have worked pretty well, the paragon driver worked amazingly well. anyway if anyone has any experience witth it I'd love to hear it. 5. ok here's the deal I grew up on CP/m then moved to DOS for 10 years, than was dragged to Windows for Work for several years which I am still forced to do. But I decided last year that every pc in my house w/ windows would be the LAST windows installation, as things were upgraded they would move to Linux. Because I had been "playing" with Mandrake since 7.1, since I got involved w/ MCNL in 2006 I've been moving whole hog. So now I'm on 2008.1 w/ KDE4 and all the "joy" thats bringing. HOWEVER, as I tried to perform a DSL (damn small linux) HD install last night I realized how FAR AWAY I and all my books have gotten from CLI. For example, I bought a GREAT book from o'reilly on Bash Scripts, have 4 OTHERS from O'reilly on KDE/Desktop hacks, phrases ETC. Sadly I found out last night that not ONE of them can walk me through a CLI partition and format. Lucky for ME I have a CD that boots into QPARTED and that worked great, but I KNOW the FDISK and SFDISK could have done the same things, I just dont know HOW. I had HOPED that running them from the CLI would do what FDISK DOS does, which is go out read the disk, present me with the options and I can select from there. And it MAY, but I havent got a clue on where to start! So I would LOVE some CLI reference,. books are GREAT websites and test files come next. PLEASE help me out. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  6. thanks, hopefully it will generate some more responses. because NOW, I get the error that I last posted, BUT if I clear the error Bitorrent SEEMS to load, EXCEPT that the search function genrates an error (sorry i didnt catch that one before I left this am). I havent actually tried dloading a torrent yet, that may come this weekend. j
  7. ok, i uninstalled ktorent under kde3.5 reinstalld the version for 4 and yet under kde4 i am STILL gettng the error message KDEInit could not launch '/opt/kde4/bin/ktorrent anyone hsave any ideas? thnaks j
  8. it IS possible, ive just never found it needed. boot from your stick, go to mcc and partition is as you would any other disk, you may lose everything on your LAST partiton, i did this once and my setup was this: MCNL - DATA 700MB 1300MB I then added a 200MB swap and it looked like this: MCNL - SWAP - DATA 700MB 200MB 1100MB but when i did that I was able to keep my MCNL, but I lost my DATA
  9. MCNL will ABSOLUTELY load in 2GB I run an .ORG that refurbs old pc's and reloads them w/ linux and then teaches folks how to use them www.foundation4faith.org and MCNL has been our saviour more times than i can count. People are VERY reluctant to give away 500GB hd's but i have a stack almost as tall as I am, of 2GB HD's and MCNL works and runs amazingly well!
  10. thanks for the reply, I'm still getting inconsistent results inder kde4 and bittorrent. I have a copy of LinuxFormat 104 and they included a DVD w/ a "bootable" kde4 installation. but i understand with publishing lead times etc it was probably put together in january. I'll have to look for qbittorrent, it didnt show in repositories
  11. well now THAT wasnt very encouraging now was it? actually i learned a GREAT deal in working w/ MCNL. to the point that I now use it to teach a class on the weekends. is it THE latest? no, but then again, you dont always have to HAVE the latest, you'd be AMAZED at how many kids and adults are just THRILLED at being able to use something on their 4 - 5 year old PC that doesnt cut the vista upgrade! just my 2 cts
  12. what "known bugs" and where did you find them posted? I'm sure there are some, I just dont wany to spend my life trying to fix a known issue thanks j
  13. Ktorrent just wouldnt LOAD, double click, hourglass for 10 seconds then nothing launch from root, nothing happens. then I rebooted and all of a sudden it works./ reboot again, and it doent, rebopot again and...... as long as it works next time I'll try and stick w./ it, otherise i might try qtorrent, the disk your using, is it the one from LinuxPro magazine? I have it, just havent loaded it yet.
  14. If your working with XEN virtualization, I have NEVER been able to get that running with MDV (although rumor has it, it has been done) However with SLES or even SUSE10, you shouldnt really have ANY issues at all! I'm using VBOX on all of my MDV machines at home, but do have one SUSE setup just for XEN. J
  15. from what i can tell some will some wont. everything EXCEPT ktorrent seems to work just fune. interesting sie note, I rebooted last night and up pops ktorrent in all it's glory! but since i had some work to do under 3.5 I logged out and didnt go back, i'll go back again tonight when i get home. so far the only thing about KDE4 that I dont care for is the default "Seseme Street" stle icons that come up when you 1st login. again, I';m sure w/ a little poking around i can change that but, just about everything else works just fine, and quick too!
  16. did you ever find a solution for this? I was able to xfer my contacts nbut havent xferred my mail yet. j
  17. anyone gotten a torrent client to work in KDE4? did the update last night, and the FIRST time I tried to run BitTorrent, the proper ICON ws on the desktop, the application started to load, looked ok, but didnt have my torrent that I'm downloading. I started to open up the tirrent and an error was generated (something about a file missing from ...\KDE4\.... the app closed and the OCON turned to a ? mark. So I went to MCC looked, saw one JUST for KDE4 installed it and now it doesnt load at all. I've uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled, rebooted, no go checked the ktorrent site and downloaded the source for their beta ktorrent for KDE4 and when i attempted to use their instructions to build it, got an error that cmake wasnt supported. anyone gotten this or any other torrent client working in kde4? thanks J
  18. I know that you FDISK should have taken care of it, but I've always had my best luck using MCC to format and set my partitions up under the live partition. That way I KNOW I get a good clean partition of " " I do this by using MCNL as the "live" distro . Then I reboot login with the live cd again, and THEN start the USB update. My exact instructions (which are written on the 3rd grade step by step ;evel) are at: http://www.thehess.org/Rollyourown1.html along with all the files I use. hope that helps. Also, just as an afterthought. BEFORE I run the USB I go into MCC and make sure that ALL extra drives are UN MOUNTED J
  19. well the more I use 2008.1 the less I'm using my xp pc. now that i got VBOX running w/ win2k and my companies VPN, my offical reason for running windows is out the window. now I'm just hunting down little things. having played w/ KUBU +kde4 I think KDE4 is going on my test box BUT my real rweason for this rant is to ask about syncing windows handhelds. specifically the Dell Axim5 I know folks are doing it, mosty of the information that I see native revolves around the PALM items (I knew I should have kept the treo). So please anyone with any experience i am probably going to work this weekend on moving my dell over from my xp pc to my MDV so I'm all ears. My dell cradle is rs-232 w/ a USB adapter, because my XP pc (and I think my MDV too) dont have serial ports on them, if that helps. I use Kontact as my primary email address book in my MDV machine thanks in advance J [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
  20. smoething else you may want to look at is portableapps.com I have recently started using thunderbird email, firefox, gimp, open office and kompozer all from that site, and its really nice. runs under windows too, in casee you need it. j
  21. I use peazip and like it a lot http://peazip.sourceforge.net/ i'm not CLI shy, but in this case, this just seemed to work better for me j
  22. I think you could PROBABLY fit a VERY stripped down version in 2gb or less, but as other folks have mentioned it would be VERY stripped. As for MCNLive (Which I love) as long as your ok with the 2007.1 kernal and no upcoming updates, it is an AWESOME tool. I use it in a LOT of specialized areas, but unfortunatelt the original writer retired and no one has yet made any more advances on it. BUT a good alternative could be pclinuxOS http://www.pclinuxos.com/ it is a Mnadriva derivitave, it runs VERY well and very fast. my only 2 complaints are: 1) the repositories (offical ones) seem a little limited 2) Again, I think your still relying on the 2007.1 codebase, but I could be wrong there. most of my attempts to confirm or deny that have been have been ignored, but I still keepgoing back to Mandrivs power pak
  23. mindwave

if you tell kontact/kmail to create a seperate entry for each of your email addresses, where are those stored? tyhanks j [moved from Installing Mandriva by spinynorman]
