  1. Hi people, Last week i downloaded MDK 10.1 alpha and havent have the time to install it yet. Soon -probably tomorrow- beta 1 will come out and I would like to download it to try it on different pcs but i wish i didnt have to download the whole 3 cd set again but just 'updrade' the 10.1 alpha one instead. I know this is possible via rsync but I tried when 10.0 beta came out and didnt work out, it just downloaded the whole cds again using rsyn, instead of upgrading them. Can anyone -who have actually done a successful upgrade this way- give me the specific steps to do it? Thanks.
  2. Looks good! Ill give it a try when i get home, thanks!
  3. Installing firefox wont do any harm at all to your mozilla installation, so no need for uninstalling. Firefox is a diferent browser than Mozilla. I dont see why not. Im running it on MDK 9.2. BTW i do have Mozilla installed there too, no trouble whatsoever. Good luck and post if you need any help.
  4. Yeah you're right mate, very appropriate name! LOL
  5. Same problem with 10 Official. AFAIK the problem comes when you change your partition layout with harddrake (mandrakes partitioning tool), so if you already have the linux partitions created -or if you create them with another tool before the MDK 10 installation- you will be fine.
  6. If i were you id install all the updates available, since i remember having trouble with the ethernet when i first installed MDK 10 OE, which the updates resolved. Obviously youll need to use another OS, or another machine to download them...
  7. You need to install gcc, which is the GNU C compiler AFAIK. Its on one of the MDK cds, so just go to a console, su to root and do: urpmi gcc Or you can do the same via the MCC(Mandrake Control Center) graphically...
  8. Yeah thats right, just change where i say 'firefox' to 'mozilla-firefox'. Sorry, I was at work and using windo$ so i couldnt check my words... Thanks for the correction! No, anons right, the directory name you can change within the installer but the actual file to run is called mozilla-firefox. I did use the installer too and do not have that file. Maybe just a symbolic link?
  9. Ooops again, looks like i double posted. Please see the one below this one
  10. Open a console, and type 'firefox' to see if that starts the program: - if it does, you can do a 'whereis firefox' to find out the route to it, - if it doesn't, then you can do an 'updatedb' as root, and then use 'locate firefox' that will list all the files with 'firefox' on them, once you find it on that list, cd to the directory where it resides and do "./firefox". Anyway, if you didnt change the installation path when the installer asked you, you can just fire up the installer again and see whats the default path (then cancel this installation), back to the console, cd to that path and do './firefox' .
  11. oh cool, hadnt seen it... gracias anon!
  12. Assuming?? try it and post results BTW do not burn the images at high speeds, do it as low as you can, maybe 4x ... this is known to have helped before. Yeah that is correct. And also (from MDK 9.2 documentation): "The appearance of plug'n'play devices and their widespread use means that all modern BIOSes can initialize these devices. In order for Linux to recognize plug'n'play devices, your BIOS must be configured to initialize them." So maybe we are looking to a faulty board or it might need a BIOS update, check with the manufacturer.
  13. I guess he might be talking about the 'see today active post' (or something like that) option which is missing too and was very helpful. BTW I miss the 'View my post' link too... Apart from that everything works fine, thanks for a smooth transition!!
  14. No problem, but have you tried doing the updates first? Just tell me the files you want to see and ill post them, or if anyone else knows which ones are needed please let me know. I really do not know what files you need nor where the problem is, all the references ive seen to the nic in both of my "/etc/modprobe.conf" and "/etc/modules.conf" files is this line: alias eth0 3c59x but i dont think it does anything at all, -apart that i think i might have added the line myself while playing around with this files- :woops: I know, not really helpful, but , as i said, if anyone knows where to look for, ill post the contents of the files here.
  15. I fully agree I dont live in the U.K. any longer but a friend of mine does and hes got BTs adsl service with USB modem. I have been trying to get him to use linux for a long time and now hes tried 10 official just to find it impossible to get his USB modem to work so hes back in window$ , so whatever ISP you choose, make sure you get a router or anything else ethernet-based. IMHO: Ethernet ---> Networking USB ---> Whatever else ... Good luck !!
  16. I use gphoto2 which is a command line app that lets you get your photo and video files from your camera. I think is on one of the cds, so install it via urpmi and then do a 'ghoto2 --list-cameras' to view all the supported cameras.
  17. Thats why i dont like branded pcs, i wouldnt buy one of those in a thousand years. I really dont know what to do to change the setting on one of those and dont think they got more than one BIOS. Maybe the jumpers on the back of the the Hard Drive? Right there where it says 'Jumper set for Master/single drive'? I think i've seen an LBA jumper there, no sure though... Otherwise you could have a look into your pc documentation or maybe contact dell...
  18. Get the spanish tranlated version from www.mozilla-europe.org
  19. This is your Hard Drive BIOS setting being set to AUTO instead of LBA, change it and you'll be able to boot into windows again.
  20. Hi, I tried adding the line <Option "NvAGP" "3"> -it didnt exist before- but to no avail. So I have installed the previous NVIDIA driver with 2.3.6-15, and everything works flawslessly again. I think Im gonna leave it that way since Im in the process of moving to 10 OE -for which i have done another installation- and guess what, i have installed the latest nvidia + kernel 2.3.6-15 and it worked fine, I suffer no frezees in 10 OE, still a mistery what could have cause it on 9.2. Anyways, I just wanna thank everyone who tried to help. Regards, BTW, Who moved this over to the HARDWARE forum?? AFAIK, the kernel and drivers are software, arent they?
  21. I agree, I have a 400 mhz system too (we can create a club :P ), its a pentium celeron. Its running XFCE as window manager which is very light and works great, try it and you will see that everything runs far smoother than with kde. Its true RAM will help a lot, on that system Ive got 384 MB RAM too, but i think itll run fine with far less since i only use it to run a P2P program and FTP progs, cant comment on office apps -as OpenOffice- since dont use them on that pc. In short i recommend you the same as permittivity2, I would first try a lighter window manager and if you still find it slow, get more ram. Hope it helps
  22. I have the same nic and works fine now. I remember having some issues when i first installed 10.0 OE but after the updates the problem was gone. Do as scoopy said, install the updates, and if still doesnt work afterwards i'll be glad to post my config files (modules.conf and others) to help you out.
  23. I dont use TV output either. I only got my monitor attached to the graphics card as always has been. I havent checked any files, the only thing i did was, first installed the newest 2.6.3-15 kernel and then upon reboot install the latest nvidia drivers. As i had the previous NVIDIA drivers installed i didnt see the need to edit XF86Config-4, do i need to do anything? If so, what should i look for? Ehmm, uhmm, Xinerama... ehem.. Whats that?? :D Thanks people!
  24. Yeah i think i did, and the 'Remove software' section of the MCC doesnt show any other kernel source installed rather than 2.6.3-15. And now i remember that the installer did mention something about removing the old driver installed before installing the newest one, but i think it does that eveytime you wanna install the driver becuase of a new kernel...
  25. Hi, I have installed the latest kernel from mdk, 2.6.3-15 via urpmi -as I usually do-. When i rebooted i was prompted with the error message about the graphics driver and all, so i logged in as root in text mode and installed the latest nvidia drivers (1.0-6106) I had downloaded days ago. So i run the ndivia file and this message comes up: WARNING: Your kernel was configured to include rivafb support as a loadable kernel mudule. The rivafb driver conflicts with the NVIDIA friver; the NVIDIA kernel module will still be built and installed, but be aware that the NDIVIA driver will not be able to function properly if the rivafb module is loaded! So I just ignored the message and the driver installed fine, but now im having some issues. It logs fine into kde and all, no problems there, but the machine will freeze if i start a tv program (zapping is the one i use). I'm using MDK 9.2 and never had this problem with the previous kernel and driver versions (2.6.3-14 and nvidia driver 1.0-5336). Anybody else having this problem with 2.6.3-15 and latest nvidia driver? Any clue how to get around it? Thanks a lot for all possible responses. [moved from Software by spinynorman]
