  1. Kanotix is stable enough to use as a primary OS, and is it easy to play multimedia? I read the site and I might try it instead of Ubuntu
  2. I was sorta looking for a rolling distro too but I don't want alfa versions, like cooker is now and what i am using atm because that's a bit to broken atm. I do want the latest stable software and don't mind using betas for less critical programs, as long as I can downgrade easily. I also prefer to have a distro with nice gui tools and not fussy about proprietary stuff nor other legal (patent) stuff. Which distro would you recommend then? (btw: one tool that made upgrading in mandriva easier for me is "etc-update" )
  3. type your password in the name field to see if the keyboard is still correct....
  4. Strange Opera should support ipv6

you are logged in as a regular user, type su - first in the terminal to make it a root terminal.
  6. KDE is just as "real" UNIX as GNOME. Me, I prefer KDE because it's easier to make it feel the way you want to, GNOME hides a lot of features.
  7. did you try updating again, maybe not all components were uploaded to the server when you updated or the kbuildsycoca command you could also go to irc mandriva or mandriva-cooker channels and ask Hawkwind the maker of those rpms....
  8. try show differences first I while ago I launched it for the first time and updated about 140 files w/o ill effects but I dont know for your system off course....
  9. ehm do you have etc-update installed (else install with urpmi etc-update) and run it, maybe there's a config file somewhere which should be updated?
  10. Yeah I know but I am on Cooker not 2006 :(
  11. And would you need to recompile all the software (not in the repos) or would software wich runs on normal dapper/debian linux also run
  12. Blino from Mandriva said fixing this bug doesn't have a high priority, though will be fixed before 2007 final :(

  14. Did you try making a new user and see if you can start kde from that user?

    Activex

Wine + Internet Explorer for windows :( I don´t think the win32 version of FF plays activex without some sort of plugin (it´s called neptune iirc)
  16. Under [General] in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc add the line: ServerVTs=-7 or see if in the same directory exists a file called kdmrc.rpmnew or .rpmsave; backup the old kdmrc file and rename the kdmrc.rpmsave to kdmrc, add the above line again if you get the same error again.
  17. You already have a far more powerful way at your disposal: dont buy their products. Besides I am against forcing companies to make or not make a certain product, as it limits their freedoms, the market decides whats wanted and what not.
  18. Did you test Synaptic too? I really like synaptic though unfortunately it´s broken in Cooker (and so is smart --gui) :( I would be interested to see a test of synaptic...
  19. I assume this is from your browser? I guess this has to do more with browser setting then. I know Opera has the option to parse an url directly or not and download and then play.

    Firefox [solved]

:) It took a little effort but now that you have your sources set up, future upgrades and installation of software should be easy

Hmmm, I guess you need to set up all your repositories still. Hold on I will tell you how in a sec. type each line in a console: urpmi.removemedia -a urpmi.addmedia main ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/MandrivaLinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/main with media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/MandrivaLinux/official/2006.0/i586/media/contrib with media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia plf-free ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/plf/mandriva/free/2006.0/i586 with synthesis.hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia plf-nonfree ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/plf/mandriva/non-free/2006.0/i586 with synthesis.hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/MandrivaLinux/official/updates/2006.0/main_updates/ with media_info/synthesis.hdlist.cz urpmi.addmedia SoS-2006 http://seerofsouls.com/mandriva/2006/i586/2006/ with synthesis.hdlist.cz then try urpmi mozilla-firefox another edit: grrr, the board automatically reformatted those url´s, the new edit should be copy and pastable... if you still cant get those sources copied, look here

    Firefox [solved]

I am running the experimental version of Mandriva so I am not sure if the latest version is in the repositories. Anyway try: from a console as root (type su) type urpmi firefox else try: urpmi.addmedia SoS-2006 http://seerofsouls.com/mandriva/2006/i586/2006/ with synthesis.hdlist.cz first and then urpmi firefox
  24. Oops typo sorry, fc-cache -r forces a complete rebuild, even if a valid cache exists (from fc-cache --help: -r, --really-force erase all existing caches, then rescan) Try deleting all directories in your home which have .font in it first (2 files and 1 dir on my system)
