  1. True...I would also like to add that Mandriva did not act like a corperation at all, on the contrary... corperations are out to make profit to do this they need your money, since corperations cannot force, unlike governments can and do, you to hand over your money they have to make you give it to them voluntary by giving you a good product/service you desire in return, Mandriva failed in this miserably....
  2. because of the freetype thing i grabbed the most recent version of freetype AND freetype-tools (not really even needed) from cooker and installed through kpackage, I basicly borked the system and apt would want to move forward nor backward to let me reinstall the (older) original packages......
  3. But I read somewhere on the pclinuxos fotum in a recent post by Tex that they take mandriva srpms and automatically rename them.....
  4. In windows it is done like: ping www.google.com -f -l XXXX In linux I tried something like: # ping -s 57 -M do www.google.com PING www.l.google.com (64.233.183.99) 57(85) bytes of data. 64 bytes from nf-in-f99.google.com (64.233.183.99): icmp_seq=1 ttl=244 (truncated) 64 bytes from nf-in-f99.google.com (64.233.183.99): icmp_seq=2 ttl=244 (truncated) 64 bytes from nf-in-f99.google.com (64.233.183.99): icmp_seq=3 ttl=244 (truncated) 64 bytes from nf-in-f99.google.com (64.233.183.99): icmp_seq=4 ttl=244 (truncated) --- www.l.google.com ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 4 received, 0% packet loss, time 3032ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 17.315/26.672/36.490/8.888 ms but my packets get fragmented above 56!? Am I doing something wrong?
  5. Basicly it's Mandriva with apt/synaptic instead of urpmi/rpmdrake and some nicer looking icons for the mcc and their KDE seems to be quite responsive. I tried tr4, the last beta and it had some bugs (printer didnt work, multimedia keys didnt work, freetype had byte code interpreter disabled making fonts ugly...) which made me switch back to mandriva again...
  6. did you already use xev to see if those keys generate any output (type xev in a console, put mouse cursor in xev window and press the keys....)
  7. most buttons on my logitech mx610 mouse work out of the box (volume up and down and mute), and i guess you could manually assign functions to them....
  8. I made a patch for bug-28016: 10.8 drakfont cannot import Windows ™ fonts from partitions mounted via FUSE (e.g. ntfs-3g) :D
  9. Oh and on topic konqueror does 1 thing and does it very well: you click on something and konqueror displays it.... I hope in KDE4 they will keep konqueror useable and updated and not try to turn it into dolphin or nautilus
  10. lol i was just trying out different configs trying to solve this problem when I read this thread..... last summer I had 2 distros installed ubuntu (dapper flights) and mandriva 2007 cooker, mandriva was slow (type b behaviou) ubuntu fast (type a) but now they are both slow
  11. Yes, I guess there were 2 things, when I: $ vm [tab] I get: vmnet-bridge vmnet-sniffer vmware/ vmware-loop vmnet-dhcpd vmrun vmware-authtrusted vmware-mount.pl vmnet-natd vmstat vmware-cmd vmware-ping vmnet-netifup vm-support vmware-config.pl vmware-vdiskmanager it didn't list the vmware command to start vmware and the fact it apperantly can't be installed on ntfs-3g partitions  I only have plenty of space left on that partition and a little bit on a fat32 @scarecrow, it already started and picked up the correct gtk-theme, I didnt need to VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware
  12. hmmm i installed on another partition (fat32 instead of ntfs-3g) and now is does power on but it complains about not having the vmware tools installed

  14. okay so wmware appears to be crashing because it doesnt have a page file.... i don't have any set up how can i still run wmware then?
  15. Okay, I found the console, created the kernel module and created a virtual machine but I am still unable to boot a cd-rom nor .iso from it.
  16. Hi, I want to try to install some distros in vmware but can't figure out how to do it, i managed to play some of the premade distros in vmplayer but don't know how to install any or play one of the pre-made ones in vmserver. When I use vmserver with one of this premade ditros, I get: $ vmrun start /home/ffi/vmk520/vmk520.vmx Error: Command failed: A file was not found Which rpm do i need and how do I insert an iso or boot from a virtual machine? [moved from Software by spinynorman]
  17. do you know what a console is and where to find it in mandriva? do you know how to get root priviledges (to add plf sources)
  18. my fonts look marvelous in mandriva but you need to enable plf to get the plf version of freetype, see http://www.mandrivausers.org/easyurpmi/index.php to do that than in a console type kcontrol and enable anti-aliasing and subpixel hinting in fonts (under appearance and themes) btw welcome to mub ;)
  19. in the meantime i googled somemore around and found this solution: irqprobe all-generic-ide but the cd is so slow to start up, it takes over 15 mins to go to the desktop. This computer runs XP a browser, dvd shrink and a virus scanner but acrobat is too much would installing a linux distro put some life into this computer? If so which one, would SAM be okay? It looks really nice, slick and very familiar to MDV (it's based on pclinuxos 2007)
  20. I am trying to install sam linux on a really old p2 compaq laptop, but i get the following error when booting: no ide channels found [ok] searching for the loop image: [done] error: unable to mount the livecd dropping you to a limited shell I have tried Mandriva one 2007 Spring and it boots, SAM also boots from my computer and the media checks out according to the build in mediacheck (which doesn't run from the laptop either)
  21. did you try running the set up wizard? When you run the wizard it asks for your root password and sets everything up automatically, you also might have to have sudo installed but i am not sure about that for that to work...
  22. welcome to linux and mub :D , i haven' t installed from the live-cd so i don' t know if it overwrites or repartitions but was the file located on a ntfs partition? btw which version of mandriva did you install? gnome or kde?
  23. No one with a clear mind up there!? Cristianity and atheism same side of the same coin....Where's the atheist edition...
  24. http://www.mandriva.com/download ;) be sure to grab 2007.1 spring edition not 2007
  25. Setting up a boatloader for several harddisks never is easy for some reason, my guess is grub is looking for it's config files but looking in the wrong drive/partition. Use the mandriva control center from the live cd and experiment with the different drives partitions. My boot device is /dev/sda (there is an option for hda hda2 hda3 sda sda3 and sda5....hda3 is where mandriva is installed on my system....)
