  1. It's really, really great. But I have two remarks 1. There's still a lot of bugs in it (and I can't dowload fixes since I couldn't get networking to work yet). 2. The internet connection panel now is EVEN MORE CONFUSING than before!! I guess it is no problem when everything gets autodetected or if your one of these guys that fiddles with config files just to pass dead time, but I cannot make heads or tails about it. What is even worse is the screen does not get refreshed so you get the impression the thing has stalled... Speed... is GREAT! Everything from startup time to opening and moving windows to using multiple applications simultaneously is faster. As for bootup time I got the impression they started much less processes by default. For me it's better this way. Of course sometimes I still have to wait for the ethernet connection to 'fail'; does anyone know if you can manually 'skip' this step? The start menu is really well done... although I heard from others on this board it has a tendency to disappear in certain situations :P Also, I do not have a lot of applications installed by default. Well, I guess I should have chosen 'custom package selection' then... Darkelve
  2. Well, I guess that's what you get when people hold these issues very close to their heart.
  3. I would have high expectations for a web design program that makes uses of correct syntax and a combination of (X)html/Css, wich also gives 'amateurs' the ability to do their design in a Live Preview window. Think of a cross between Nvu crossed with WestCiv's Stylemaster and Layout master. Now these last two programs are Windows&MacOSX only, so some of you probably do not know them. But they are excellent examples of how tools can be built that produce the most excellent quality of code on sites, while still being able to concentrate on the design.
  4. Maybe a picture of your dual monitor system would come in handy also?
  5. Yeah. While you're looking, might as well start working things out on paper first.
  6. Tyme, I will. Then maybe then we can make this evil topic go away :P :P :P
  7. Ok, so maybe I overreacted a bit on the advertising part. Problem is I'm really sensitive to that but... case closed, as far as I'm concerned.
  8. I don't want to Mandrake to die within a year... or 10 years, or a 100... truly, you're kind of hurting my feelings on this one (ok perhaps I did that to you too, unintentional then). I was going to install it and report bugs too. This *despite* the fact that I cannot get my internet connection set up in Mandrake (while it is so easy in Mepis or Lindows). And despite the fact that I, as a consequence, will have to reboot for each (series of) bug report(s) I want to file. I was ALSO planning on buying the Offical version when it reaches the stores, considering to invest yet AGAIN in hardware if I really cannot work things out. The distro is great, IMHOnestly, but Mandrake's marketing is often vague and vague does not cut the cheese. I felt like I should point this out. Bad marketing helps nobody, especially Mandrake. I'm just pointing out something here, just like I think Gowator is trying to do, not breaking Mandy down...
  9. I have to add that a I have seen a LOT of persons on this board who are actually very happy with Mandrake 10.0 Community. And that's good, obviously Mandrake have done really great work on 10.0. But do they know/understand there's a 'Stable/Official' version coming out or understand the difference? I believe the intentions of Mandrake are very good, but in my opinion they fail to make it crystal clear to everyone (esp. new users) what this version is all about. Myself, and probably Gowator too, are still having in our minds the 9.2 product page, where they explain Mandrake can run Windows applications through VmWare (or crossover, but I think it was VMware) and put a picture next to it showing Mandrake running Windows in VMWare. A user could be easily fooled into believing a VMWare version was *included* with the Powerpack. Just as I assumed e.g. Win4Lin and a few other commercial packages (like Hancom Office) were included, but they were only demos! The point is this kind of confusion has to be avoided at all times. If it's not, then there's something very wrong in their PR department. If they did this 'misinformation' deliberately to make them or their product look better, that is quite bad. I don't believe that, but in this case there is still something wrong. For example, I challenge everyone to go to the Xandros Product page and find similar statements/situations. They state *exactly* what they are selling and how it benefits. There's no confusion possible. Compared to the Mandrake situation... well I'm just trying to make a point here. Thumbs up to Mandrake for making a superb release. Thumbs (kind of) down for their confusing communication.
  10. While you guys are ALL right, I think Thelorax makes very good points. It's probably 'crystal' clear to most persons who are familiar with Linux or frequent this board a lot, but for persons fresh&new to Linux, this can lead to a lot on unjustified frusration, just because they don't grasp the concept. This is exactly the feeling I have about this. In my humble opinion, this could all have been cleared up by choosing a naming convention that made more sense about the status of this release, e.g. Mandrake 10.0 Unstable, Mandrake 10.0 Unofficial, Mandrake 10.0 bleeding edge, whatever... But naming it 'Community' in the hope to have more downloaders and bug testers is something that I think could easily backfire. A more 'intelligent' way to do this, is e.g. referring to the 'plea to save Mandrake by buying' (the 'please give us your money'-stuff of last year) and saying something like: Now wouldn't that have had a similar effect (maybe even better), without all the confusion? Of course it's all easy for me to say... but still... Darkelve
  11. Finally HP shows its cards! :D Preinstalled with Mdk10 (official) this'll be awesome.
  12. Here's a nice CSS tutorial for those of us that have too much time on our hand... ;) http://www.westciv.com/style_master/hands_...l_sm/index.html Note: the way Stylemaster and Layout-master are built, is something I think Nvu should address as well. But I guess it'll "just" work with inline styles... bummer.
  13. If you're serious about web designing, I would suggest Quanta Plus. BUT: people who use Frontpage probably aren't serious about that (or just ignorant or misinformed, it all comes down to the same :P ). I would suggest to check out Nvu: Nvu website They are specifically developing this as a replacement for Frontpage. They are building on code from the (older) Mozilla Composer. That's really the only one I can think of... Darkelve
  14. But you have to admit, the whole release thing is Very confusing.
  15. I've just installed Mandrake 10.0 Community and come across a few issues. One is that Quanta plus crashed on me, the other is that Totem had awful colors when starting up. I had to adjust the value from 50% to 100% and then the colors were good again. Something seems wrong with these default settings. Anyhow, how can I report these things so they can be fixed? Problem is that I don't have a working internet connection so I can't immediately send it. I could make some screenshots and notes, or save 'logfiles' to my FAT32 partition then send it for review. I'd like to help out with this, but don't know really know how.
  16. If there's one thing I learned about Linux, is that you can never have TOO much different distributions at your disposal... I really like the font rendering and speed of Mdk 10, but it's not the 'Wow'-experience for me like I had going from 9.0 to 9.1 and 9.2 ... well, apart from the 'wow' for the speed at bootup and how fast different windows are drawn on the screen and how you can really have HEAPS of GUI programs running at the same time without real problems. This could well be the very best 'n00b'-distro out there at the moment, but I think I must admit I've outgrown the n00b-stage a bit. Of course, not getting my network connection to work is the biggest showstopper. It's kind of frustrating how it works without any real problems in Lindows and Mepis. At this point, Mepis works better for me, so I hope a version with kernel 2.6 will also be released soon...
  17. That could the ticket. With this you are stating a particular element should be treated as a block element, rather than inline. Through this you can use the entire available width. With 'shifting', you mean that when you hover a certain link, it pushes the link below down a bit? I visited your page with Mozilla Firefox and IE6 and Opera, but everything seems to work fine. Guess you already solved it.
  18. Tyme, I was talking about arTee. Poor guy. Just got married, THEN they release Mandrake 10... The two separate (marriage and Mandrake release) are superb, but the two together? Anyway, I'll stop posting on this to avoid going too off-topic. And it stops being funny after a while...
  19. Sue, just to inform you: I have got a Linksys Wet11 Ethernet bridge to connect my Linux box with the net. But, set using DHCP, it doesn't work (or, perhaps, I cannot get it to work) under Mandrake. When running Mepis and LindowsOS they had no problem, I guess because they are Debian-based. Although Knoppix (3.3) did not work. Anyhow, people here informed me the problem might be resolved if I used static IP addresses. So if you have a similar problem you know what to look for. Darkelve
  20. I agree!! Spend More TIME here!!! (Never mind if you just got married ) Darkelve
  21. Reading this again, I think I'm starting to understand a little better. Basically, you want to have the 'hover' effects on your links to be the whole width of your menu, right? Remember that the styles you apply to the links themselves, will be applied to their containing box, which is somewhat smaller than the menu their in. Imagine looking how far the 'hover'-lines reach then drawing a rectangular box around the links, that should give you an idea how big they are. Perhaps you could try setting a width for your links so their containing boxes align exactly with the edges of your menu. Although I have to say I did not look at your website in detail. So I might be off the mark by a bit. But I do remember when playing around with CSS I had a problem like this, and solved it through similar means. Darkelve
  22. Tyme, I don't think you need any scripting for this at all. Scoopy was right suggesting to use different selectors, but I'm not sure why it doesn't work. Here's how I would do it and I'm sure this method works. You can see that on our homepage http://www.delijn.be/ , the top navigation bar is divided into two parts: the bottom part (longest line) and the top part. As you can see the links in the top part use underlines, the links in the bottom part no underlines and change color on hovering. You can find the style rules for this in www.delijn.be/css/sub.css All you have to do is to 'nest' your selectors in some kind of way, then identify the building blocks of your page. Say you have three building blocks: <div id="navigation">List of links here</div> <div id="content">Content here</div> <div id="footer">A footer</div> Then you could give all links in a particular style block a different presentation by using e.g. #navigation a:link,a:visited, a:active {color: #000000; text-decoration: none;} #content a:link,a:visited, a:active {color: #0033cc; text-decoration: underline;} #content a:hover {text-decoration: none;} #footer a:link,a:visited, a:active {color: #fffffff; text-decoration: underline, overline;} For more fine control, you can give a class to your links: <a href="link.html" class="nav">Option 1</a> <a href="link2.html" class="nav">Option 2</a> with: a.nav {text-decoration: none; font-weight: bold;} Hope this helps! 23. Anna, do you know I got my digital camera working at last in 9.2, with your help? Thanks for that again.
  24. I did a google for you, maybe they are helpful. There seem to be quite a few people with similar problems. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ar...2003/11/1/90083 http://www.madisonlinux.org/pipermail/madl...ber/007505.html http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/ar...2003/11/1/90083 http://www.gnuenterprise.org/irc-logs/gnue...c.log.17Nov2003 Have you tried if you can run btdownloadcurses.py <url address> OR btdownloadheadless.py <url address>
  25. I'm think I'm developing a weak spot for Mandrake...
