  1. I've tried dolphin which is available on 2007.1. I don't really care for it though. If I wanted a "file manager" of that variety I would just use krusader. Both of these are just midnight commander types of file managers. What I miss about both dolphin and krusader (and midnight cmmander, as far as that goes) is the lack of the tree view, with directories being "exploded" on the right, which is available in konqueror, or in Windows, in both Explorer and Powerdesk. So, I guess I'll just continue using konqueror as a file manager. I've never preferred it as a web browser, though.
  2. I went to cnn.com and notice that konqueror played the live video streams with no problem. No external plugins were needed to handle the Windows Media Player format. However, for Firefox and Opera, I had to urpmi mplayerplug-in.so to ve able to play the same content. The Linux/Unix mantra was always to "do one thing well." Does konqueror have the ability built in to play handle the Windows Media Player format? That is the old Windows way, to have such capabilities built into the product. It ends up causing bloatware. It is like File Open, File Save, etc. These applets don't get built into the product, but rather exist independently so they can be used by any product that needs such functionality. If instead, konqueror is using an external file like a plugin, then why can't these other products, like Firefox and Opera use it? Don't understand.
  3. I see that pidgin not available yet via urpmi. Also, I know some people who use Windows who won't even give Linux a try because of things like video with instant messaging. It is not like this is a new capability. It has been around a good while.
  4. Any good reason for someone using gaim to change? Any "must have" new features? (I don't use any of the new IM services they now support.)
  5. I would post my xorg.conf, but I'm not at home. (Constrained to Windows XP at work.) If you still have had no luck I'll post it then.
  6. Got it working from info provided in this thread, and thanks for the info. However, after 5 frustrating minutes with Metisse (with no Windows key) I was very happy to get back to old, regular 2D KDE again. Thought it might have made management easier of the zillion windows I usually have open, but I'm better off with the use of the virtual desktops icon in the task bar. Also, it is rather annoying in a dual monitor setup to have all windows open in the middle of the two screens. Additionally, maximize does so across both screens. MIght be more useful for someone with a single monitor. Don't know if I'm brave enough to try Beryl or not....... _________________ When surrounded by wolves, 'tis best to howl.
  7. Which driver? I'm currently using the dkms version of 9755.
  8. I did the following, "Open MCC, go to....Hardware then........Configure 3D Desktop effects." As soon as I clicked on "Configure 3D Desktop effects" I was immediately logged out of KDE. never even saw what was supposed to be in the dropdown. I tried selecting 3D from the login prompt, but was then prompted for the root password which I supplied. Thereupon, it went back to the login screen again. Guess I'll have to pass on Metisse. EDIT: This was after an upgrade from 2007.0 to 2007.1 and am running dual monitors.
  9. Yep, neddie, you were right. I reinstalled python-qt and then downloaded the superkaramba theme and all worked fine. :) Thanks much!
  10. Only item in my list if installable software containing "pyqt" is pyqt-3.15.1 (with the devel) After doing a urpmi python-qt the same problem remains, so I removed it again.
  11. Thanks -- will give it a try when I get home after work.
  12. On 2007.1, I installed superkaramba, which in turn requires pyqt. However when attempting to urpmi pyqt I get that the installation failed because "PyQt-devel-3.15.1-4mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied PyQt[== 3.15.1])". Doesn't urmi resolve dependencies?
  13. Yeah, you're right. I wasn't thinking. I did boot from the iso. I had actually forgotten that. Getting senile before my time. Sigh,.....
  14. rickst29: I updated from my downloaded iso. Didn't do an init-3. Everything worked fine. Perhaps I was just lucky -- don't know.
  15. misfitpierce: Where did you get that weather thingie? I like your background too.
  16. How could a vampy type of regeek not be a code freak? :P
  17. How about creating a website for yourself? That could keep you busy forever.
  18. kappfinder??? Didn't know such a thing existed. Sure could have used that a few times. Guess what I'll be doing tonight? ;)
  19. Hmmm. Didn't even notice they had done anything with the KDE menus. Guess I'll have to poke my nose into it tonight.
  20. I just changed the 2007.0 to 2007.1 in my repositories and all weorked well.
  21. Thanks dexter11. I'll hunt around for mdkapplet when I get home, or urpmi it if necessary. I did install mdk-check-update-common, but am still not sure of what it does, or even if I need it for anything.
  22. I'm a club Silver member, and that is essentially just to support the distribution. However, as such I can post messages on the Mandriva forum and I do get excellent responses from A. Williamson. Also, it does let me get the new versions a bit earlier as an early seeder (and then brag to everyone else that I already have the new thingie. ) I actually get most of my "support" from this forum.
  23. Thanks, but it doesn't exist for KDE yet. It is planned, though.
  24. It was released earlier this week to early seeders. It is probably also made available to subscribed Mandriva Club members before the general public. But, as far as I know, it is the final cut. When Mandriva makes it available to everybody is just a political/business issue.
