    XXX magic cookie ?

Joe Noob, you must be prophetic! Just to make sure you see the latest from the Sec Team I am copying the link here as it deals with magic cookie. http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/advisorie...=MDKSA-2003:016 ://http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/ad...MDKSA-2003:016 ://http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/ad...MDKSA-2003:016 I think chances of most of us being hacked via M cookie are slim, but nice to see the Sec team tighten up the seams!

    XXX magic cookie ?

I am certainly no expert, but a quick google search makes me think this is normal operation and not a problem. http://uw713doc.caldera.com/en/man/html.X1...curity.X1M.html http://www.bu.edu/computing/acs/help/gener..._security.shtml://http://uw713doc.caldera.com/en/man/...urity.shtml ://http://www.bu.edu/computing/acs/hel...rity.shtml These two websites explain it pretty clearly and should help.
  3. Sorry you ended up without any feedback, but I sure couldn't see anything that would cause that to happen. For future reference: What type of mouse were you using? Was this after the recent Mandrake update to KDE 3.0.5a ? or to KDE 3.1? That might help others that end up with same or a similar problem. Glad your problem is solved. I rely on Kate a good bit myself.
  4. A quick google search with diamond supramax linux search terms and USB as narrower gave me less than encouraging info: http://www.modem-help.co.uk/mfc/sonic.html#SUP2890 might help fill out the bad news. Not sure of your location and type... if you are in US it might be a Conexant HCF chipset (manual should tell you) and the Conexant site does have a generic linux driver. Try looking at http://www.linmodems.org for some more info on how to do this too. Here is another one I got from google: http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/usblist.html or http://www.usbman.com/linuxusb.htm I also did not see your modem listed on the ML compatible hw list so unless you can find out the chipset and locate a driver, you might have to buy a compatible modem instead.
  5. Here is what I posted on 2 Jan on this board. You can also check the thread (url below) for some other ideas. http://www.mandrakeusers.org/viewtopic.php...1722&highlight=
  6. I love the simple solution! It is elegant and makes a lot of sense. Thanks for sharing your experience. I know it will help me in the future.
  7. I stumbled across something that helped me get myOpenOffice HELP file fonts to display again. They were totally invisible after doing a font upgrade via Mandrake Control Center in 9.0 I followed steps above and used Times as replacement font which helped my menu font problem, but my OO HELP files still were not visible. I must have tried 30 other fonts with no luck. Then I got lucky and through trial and error found this fix! 1. Open console and enter 'su' and password to become root. 2. Since I like to use GUI, I enter the command 'kate' to use the kate editor as root. (Note: You can use whatever file editor you like.)3. Use kate to open and Edit the /etc/openoffice/openoffice.cfg file 4. Delete the '#" in the last line of second paragraph so that the line reads: ( others suggest using value of 110 in place of auto )5. SAVE the file. 6. [root@localhostkelly]# exit (don't forget to go back to user status by exiting root) 7. Test your OO help file. It should now be visible. Hope it helps another newbie avoid hours of surfing for a fix!
  8. Good to know these various fixes. In my googling it seems that there are LOTS of problems with rpm and urpmi and not all are result of operator error ! Guess all the interaction makes them sensitive to changes, eh? Thanks to all for sharing the fixes. I am sure that it will help many others. :D
  9. I had luck with using urpmi.removemedia -c individually for each source shown in source manager. Another guy on Mandrake Forum (comments) used a different approach and fixed his situation. Hope this will work for you Moonchild. I am still a real newbie with Linux, but 20+ yrs of computing with other OS's and this feels like the upgrade caused some file corruption in the rpm db that is causing these problems. Once I did the urpmi.removemedia -c thing, I noticed that it forced a rewrite of urpmi.cfg file which also was corrupted and had some ghost entries from sources/mirrors I had previously removed and no longer showed in Source Manager, but WERE still showing in urpmi For example, everytime I did urpmi.update, it would say it was ignoring ftp1u which was NOT a source any longer. So something about the interface between rpm and urpmi is not happy about this upgrade.
  10. I think what might have helped me was removing ALL sources by using urpmi.rmovemedia -c as it cleared out the header problem I had. From urpmi.removemedia man page: After I did this seems like things started working again. Hopefully will help you too Moonchild. bvc: On Mandrake Forum and Club I posted that the upgrade caused me problems and a few others said the same symptoms so I think that it works for some, not others. Seems the people that used Mandrake Update are OK. The ones that did rpm -Fvh per manual instructions are the ones with problems. If yours is working... I'd say you are OK. Hallelujah!
  11. Smoketoomuch: Thanks for your efforts and help. I read the article on the damaged header and some other info that is related. So far it seems like it might have corrected itself or is at least skipping or ignoring the problem. I think I traced it back to a bad program on Install CD 1 (Koffice) which would not install properly so I had to download Koffice RPM and install by itself. My CD is from local (SE Asia) magazine and might have a burn error that caused this. Since things are working normally, I am going to take the easy way out and just leave things as they are. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it!) But if I have a problem, I will try using your suggestion and upgrading. I suspect ML will have another version of urpmi out shortly as several seem to have problems with this latest upgrade  Blessings!
  12. I don't know about others, but for me, reading the man pages in console mode is difficult. The longer the man page, the worse it is to figure out. I stumbled across a tip in old board docs by Tom Berger and it really helped. This tip is for the GUI oriented newbie crowd. If you are a real console user, it won't help you. :D Try using KDE Help reader ( the cute little red and white lifering icon on the launch panel) or via K--Documentation--Help. When it opens type the man page into the LOCATION spot. for example: man:man man:urpmi man:rpm It is easier to read, scroll, print and uses color to attract your attention to important items. Try it, I think you will like it! The man pages might even start to make sense!
  13. Made a little progress. Cannot list all the things I did but here is a brief outline: 1. Moved all the list files out of /var/lib/urpmi to a new directory on /home partition in case I needed them later. 2. rebooted 3. In Source Manager was able to delete the rest of the sources. I also ended up having to delete the Installation CD's. When I tried to remove CD 1 it removed all of them btw! 4. Using urpmi.addmedia I was able to add back Installation CD's, texstar and update sources. 5. Not sure why but the db.001 files reappeared following this so I deleted and did rpm --rebuilddb as root of course and got the following error: Mandrake update is now working and so far so is urpmi. Any ideas how to resolve the "damaged header" issue?
  14. Smoketoomuch: Thanks for your input. I will look into aptget and synaptic from Texstar. Haven't tried them and do not know what they do, so will need to study it out a bit. I have tried rpm --rebuilddb after deleting db.00x files, but it did not help. I still have a problem with Software Manager and Mandrake Update not working. Source Manager files are also goofed up and won't allow me to remove them or edit them via the GUI or urpmi.removemedia etc. So I am sort of stuck on this one for now but continuing to explore options and to study this out.
  15. Haven't gone as far as using this yet, but got a pointer from Mandrake Club user to a link with help on rebuilding damaged rpm db: http://hermes.afaa.asso.fr/users/pascal/li...x/rpm-rebuilddb Thought I would post it here too so others might find this info. Still considering my options to fix this.
  16. bvc, thanks again for your suggestions. I have the gnorpm installed but have not used it. Stlll thinking about the options, but about ready to do the manual delete route as southernguy advised and see what happens.
  17. As the people here say, saya pusing, dong! It literally means this is making me dizzy! I really don't know what to do. Gonna take a short break for lunch and hope it looks better when I return. Thanks for your help bvc... I appreciate it. Southernguy, I agree that the urpmi and rpm interface still needs some work. Hopefully this upgrade is a step in that direction. Now if I can just get it working!
  18. Thanks for reply bvc! Sorry, but I am still not 100% clear on what you are saying here. Sounds like I should not have run the "noarch" rpm right? I followed your example and am posting results below: Any other way I can determine what version is installed or not installed? Kpackage DOES show it installed. That makes me think that the db files are still not correct.
  19. Here is more info on this: I ran rpm -V for each of the seven rpm's I downloaded for the urpmi update. They all show that they are NOT installed. Then I checked /var/lib/rpm and deleted the db.001 and db.002 files and did rpm --rebuilddb and I see the two db.0xx files have reappeared. I tried the rpm -V on each of the seven files as both user and root and none of them show as installed. for example: Kind of confusing to me. Is this because there is corruption in my db of installed software? Which one do I believe? I do notice in Kpackage that the packages are showing the new versions and proper new install time. Another oddity is my clock is changing time and date with each reboot after this problem. Wierd... any ideas? Thanks in advance!
  20. Counterspy and bvc, Thanks for your input. I am sort of sitting on this since for a time to see what my options are. Everything except Software Manager, ML Update, and Source Manager are working so far. I even think Kpackage is ok and might be an interim solution too. I followed the instructions in the Mandrake Secure Team advisory when I did the upgrade: So, sometimes following instructions can get you into problems too! I am not able to remove entries in Software Manager or via urpmi.removemedia now. That is the problem. When I try, it only disables the entries and leaves them in the list (unchecked). It also puts the __db.001 / 002 files back into /var/lib/rpm directory. Ultimately, I may have to go into the directories (/var/lib/rpm and /var/lib/urpmi) and delete the existing files to clean things out, but I am a bit reluctant to go that far before I give a chance to get some input from ML Secure Team or guys like you that know more than I! Again, thanks for the help. I'll keep this post updated in case someone else gets bit by this.
  21. Guess this is my Christmas present? Thanks for any help anyone can offer! Running ML 9.0 here. Not one to wait, I downloaded the rpms listed in latest urpmi update from ML Security team. I downloaded because Mandrake Update doesn't work well with the slow connection I have today and my mirror had not updated yet. Wish I had waited for it now. All pkgs checked out as verified. I followed instructions and did rpm -Fvh *.rpm in the directory with the downloads and as root. It didn't run properly at first so I deleted the db.001 db.002 files in /var/lib/rpm and tried again. This time it seemed to work. Now my urpmi won't update and I see the Texstar source has been corrupted. I have tried to remove it and Software Source Manager shuts down. When I tried to edit and insert the proper info it also shuts down when I try to save changes. Also, the INSTALL SOFTWARE module no longer shows anything when it opens. rpm --rebuilddb doesn't seem to work now either and didn't help the Install Software tool find installed packages. Kpackage shows the urpmi updates DID install and are the new versions. Questions: 1. I downloaded all seven pkgs in the email list into the same directory and then ran the command rpm -Fvh *.rpm Was I wrong to run this on all 7 rpms? 2. Any advice how to get rpm urpmi running again? Clue: Noticed that texstar entry is not enabled in Software Mgr and the URL is deleted. Strange that it does not show in any of the urpmi directories except for /etc/urpmi/ urpmi.cfg which does have an entry for texstar source. Does this point to the problem? Again, thanks for any advice on how to return things to normal. Happy Holidays!
  22. http://www.informationweek.com/story/IWK20010719S0003 http://www.langa.com/newsletters/2001/2001-08-02.htm CD R's have different grades too and this link gives you some info, including how color indicates quality and shelf life. Good to know this, especially if you are using them for backup media of important data. Sorry your data got flakey on you like that. Appreciate your reminder of this problem.
  23. I am interested in installing Bibletime and wonder if anyone on the forum has experience with it and ML 9.0? Looking for some info before I take the leap and try installing this one. :)

    Evolution 1.2

Lots of fun... cannot remember all the things I did to get into and out of messes. I was able to find out that I did not have the libgtkhtml20-1.0.4-4mdk installed so I did urpmi that and dependencies. Seemed like a success. I also deleted two db.0 files and rebuilt the db and seemed OK too. But when I try to urpmi evolution or urpmi --media myrpms file:// (the path to my downloaded files) it gave me another similar error. So I am worse off than before! I think I must not be understanding what this error message is saying. Since libgal19 is installed it must mean something else. Gonna do some more studying on this. Btw, I see 1.21 is out.

    Evolution 1.2

bvc and others, To help me understand this for future reference I need some clarification please. So the error message was telling me that libgal19 was a dependency that I needed to install? My understanding was that urpmi would pull in the dependencies that were needed to install a package. I followed your lead and checked to see if libgal.so.19 was already installed: That makes me more confused than before.
